The Baltimore Ravens got dominated by the Seattle Seahawks to the tune of a 35-6 defeat on Sunday. It marks the worst of the season by far and the second worst margin of defeat at home. The Ravens fall to 4-9 and legitimately out of the playoffs, meaning that some of the Ravens younger talent gets a chance to strut their stuff and show off in live game situations for the first time this season. The adjustment in snap counts could indicate the Ravens liking what they see out of someone and maybe a bigger role in 2016.

The Baltimore Ravens got dominated by the Seattle Seahawks to the tune of a 35-6 defeat on Sunday.
The main starters on the offensive line played the entire game, all 58 snaps of it. With left tackle Eugene Monroe on injured reserve and the Ravens having switched guard Kelechi Osemele to the tackle spot, it marked the first game where there was some semblance of unity on the offensive line. What is interesting is that despite all five lineman playing 100% of the offensive snaps, we see another tackle on this list. James Hurst has 11 snaps on offense, where they placed him in as an extra blocker, tight end type of role. With the running game never really gaining hold, it clearly didn't work all that well.

The Ravens also utilized six wide receivers in the game. Kaelin Clay got his first real snap on offense this season, though it didn't amount to anything. We'll see if he gets any extra chances going forward or if the Ravens push snaps to Daniel Brown, Chris Matthews and Chris Givens instead.

Defensively, we see that the Ravens rotated players around a lot more with only two guys getting 100% of the snaps. Even though the team had difficulty with the Seattle offense throwing it wherever they liked, there were only four cornerbacks on the field in the game. More than anything, that gives a good indication on just how damaged the Ravens are in their secondary. Dean Pees tried to mix things up and we see that Zachary Orr and Albert McClellan continue to get snaps in coverage instead of using Daryl Smith in that role.

Even though the game was a blowout, the snap counts give us a good indication that the Ravens are trying some new things and checking out some of their younger players. It's not the result that the fans were hoping for, but it is exactly what they have been asking for since the bye week. Sadly, there is a good reason that some of the players shouldn't be on the field, but in a lost season, there is little you can do but give them a chance.

Ravens Defensive Coordinator Dean Pees has certainly seen his share of success, in Baltimore and elsewhere. But with the lack of defensive leadership, budding stars, and turnover production, is his approach beginning to prove ineffective for this team and this time?

Unfortunately, the buck must stop somewhere.

The popular slant on Sunday's 35-6 drubbing of the Ravens at the hands of the Seahawks is that they are "elite," and they destroyed a subpar opponent.

I don't buy it.

The Seahawks have entered a unique time in their season. Without the services of Marshawn Lynch, they've had to adjust their strategy and rely on the strengths of their other offensive superstar. The one who pines to lead his teammates ("It's what I'm made for"), to be a role model. The one whose arm is vastly underrated. Russell Wilson.

So they go on a tear and shock the NFL world with their now pass-oriented O.

Yet, Seattle has only beaten two teams with winning records--actually, .500 or better--all season.

What I am saying is that their Super reputation precedes them, and while their defense is playing well, they are not impenetrable. They are not 2000 Ravens-good. They are not even 2013 Seahawks-good. Ravens interim QB Jimmy Clausen proved that by getting a career high in passing yards on them, and getting sacked in the backfield only 1 time.

So the question becomes, who is responsible?

More buzz about the Ravens recently has pointed at improved play from their defensive backfield. Conversely, anyone watching the game yesterday saw a plethora of mistakes on the back end, admittedly ranging from communication issues to technique issues, according to Coach John Harbaugh.

It was bad. It has to be better than that. It’s no individual guy’s fault, it’s just not as good as it needs to be. I’ll take responsibility for that. We have to play way, way better pass defense. We have to play better in pass defense. And those guys are good players and all that, but you have to cover guys closer, you have to be on the right guy, all those kind of things. We’ll go to work on it, and we’ll find a way to do it better. It’s not complicated stuff. We’ll keep working on it.

Why are the players still having trouble with these things, this late in the season?

Why was the coverage soft and tentative? What was the strategy?

If we know that the Ravens have been working at 'bend-but-don't-break and disallow any big plays,' we know that they amplified that take yesterday. They put Safety Terrence Brooks at the line as a spy for Russell Wilson, who usually kills with his legs, and they tried to keep everything in front of them.

This meant giving up slant pattern after slant pattern, crossing pattern after crossing pattern. It was truly murderous to watch, if one is a Ravens fan. The killing fact, though, is that players did not adjust to different situations. They did not adjust to coverage soft spots. They did not seem to adjust to being in the Red Zone. They did not adjust for holes that coverage left open because someone took another assignment. In week 13 of the season, the players are still very confused.

Here is just one example: In this still, DB Shareece Wright, #35, does not position himself to take advantage of/protect the weak zone on the field. He is the only one who could get a jump start on the route, but he hesitated.

This points to the scheme-maker.

Dean Pees had a mutual parting of ways from New England back in 2009, when the Ravens gave the Patriots their first home playoff loss in the Belichick era. That was the game where Ray Rice went 80 yards for a touchdown on the first play. One wondered why a Super-Bowl experienced and successful coordinator washed out.

At first glance, his schemes are pretty daunting for the opposing quarterback: creative blitzes and disguised coverages. It used to be a no-brainer that the Ravens would obliterate young quarterbacks because of a combination of pass rush and coverage trickery.

Now, the last time that I can recall that happening is when the Ravens won the AFC championship in 2012-3, truly stunning Brady in the process.

Something has gone wayward, and it could be the loss of key leaders and veterans, but it more likely is that younger and newer players are made tentative by his myriad of schemes and systems. Pees himself cited Jimmy Smith for being tentative early in the year. In rebuilding or retooling, one needs veterans who can help navigate the younger players and newer players as things are reset for greatness.

The problem here is, no one knows enough of the system to do that. It seems too difficult to learn.

The strategy for Seattle, clearly, was a mistake. It seems that Pees felt that Russell Wilson would get confused and make mistakes. I thought, early in the week, that it was possible that the Seahawks would consult Jim Harbaugh for notes on how the 49ers used to face and harass Wilson in his tenure. Clearly they did not talk with, or go with, Jim Harbaugh and his approach, which was to blitz him up and down the field, and force him to pass under duress. That approach had a downfall in that if Wilson escaped the pressure, he was absolutely lethal.

The problem with Pees' approach yesterday is that he badly underestimated Wilson's ability and comfort in the pocket. I do not understand why. Wilson came in with a franchise record for touchdowns in 3 straight games, which he extended. Going back, Wilson threw 17 TDs to 0 INTs his first year of starting in college. His final year, at Wisconsin, he threw 33 TDs to 2 Interceptions. Against Big Ten defenses. No one does that, as a first-year transfer, unless he is good in the pocket. Fast Forward to Super Bowl XLIX, which saw Wilson drive down the field, in the last minute, to the one yard line against a Patriots defense. Not an easy feat. Sure, he throws up prayers, but they are answered far more often than not. Accurate, catch-able prayers. Giving him a lot of time was not only a dire mistake from the pocket perspective, it also assumes that coverage will be intact, which it was far from being.

I highly recommend going back and watching the first half yesterday. There are opportunities that the defense missed. Brooks had his hands on the ball inside of the Seattle 10 for a sure touchdown, and dropped it. A midfield Wilson pass ricocheted into the air, only to fall helplessly to the ground, no Ravens player within striking distance. Players are not anticipating the ball because they are too busy trying to make sure they're in the right place. And then they fail at that.

Dean Pees has asserted on a number of occasions that the Ravens approach does not begrudge yards, it begrudges big plays. Despite that, yesterday saw a 49 yard TD pass and a TD pass on 2nd and 20 from outside the red zone. And more.

The Ravens need to get back to begrudging Every. Single. Yard.

To daring QBs to pass and stuffing the run. Regardless of who it is.

To developing some brazen, man-dog, on-field leaders to inspire the rest of the men. To create stars who are plug-and-play and can excel by being freed to doing what they do best. Playing defensive football.

Even with the top draft pick, even with picking the top corner and safety in the draft, this is not promised under Pees' system.

Because his does not create stars. The system itself is the star.

That may work in New England, but it doesn't work here. This is a blue-collar team for a blue-collar town. The heroes must be actual and the football must be physical.

Therefore, the only option is for Dean Pees to go.

It doesn't thrill me to reach this conclusion, but yesterday wast the final straw. Seattle made it look easy and a lot of that was the Ravens' fault. Yes, there was the fumble before the half, but the TD was too easy, and the lack of turnovers is alarming. Not getting interceptions could very well be the result of players out of position and unwilling to gamble like Sherman did Sunday, coming off coverage to score a pick. This is precipitate of not knowing what to do within a scheme.

To believe that it can improve is a mistake. There are candidates out there who would bring back attacking Ravens' style D.

They cannot get better without it.

In my next article, I will break down (with video clips and all-22 film) more of the miscues by the secondary.

If I had told you at the start of the season that the Ravens would have their first quarterback controversy since the Joe Flacco/Troy Smith debacle back in 2008, you would have laughed me out of a job. Yet, entering week 15, the Baltimore Ravens are sitting here with exactly that on their hands.

After the loss of franchise quarterback Joe Flacco to a season ending knee injury, the Ravens turned to veteran quarterback Matt Schaub. The 34-year old quarterback would get beaten to a pulp against the Miami Dolphins to find himself on the injury report heading into the week 14 game against the Seattle Seahawks. After leading the Ravens to a 1-1 record during his time as the leader, the Ravens would hand the keys to former Chicago Bearsquarterback Jimmy Clausen for a game. As unexpected as possible, Clausen wasn't that bad. Now it has the Ravens wondering what they should do moving forward for the final three games of the 2015 NFL season.

The Ravens don't really need to worry about winning any more games as they are out of the playoffs, but they do need to worry about the progression and scouting of players they have on their roster. Guys like Kamar Aiken,Jeremy Butler, Chris Givens, Javorius Allen, Terrance West, and others all need a competent quarterback in order to judge them fairly as prospects for the 2016 season. That is the real thing the Ravens need to pay attention to here.

Let's look at the options:

Keep Matt Schaub at QB if healthy

Schaub is the more veteran out of the quarterbacks currently on the Ravens roster. Yet, with that veteran leadership, he also brings a fair amount of baggage with him, namely pick-sixes. In two games, he has averaged 270 yards on 80 attempts, but has thrown 3 touchdowns to 4 interceptions, 2 of those going for a touchdown the opposite way. His 65% completion percentage is about standard for his career and is actually an upgrade over both Clausen and Joe Flacco. However, the reason he is able to complete so many of his passes is because he just doesn't have the arm strength to whip the ball around, so the passing game quickly devolves into dump offs and check downs.

Keep Jimmy Clausen at QB

Clausen has only played a single game, but he did well in it. Throwing for 274 yards on 40 attempts, he mirrors Schaub in production. The issue here is that he wasn't able to put the ball in the endzone against the Seahawks, a tough task given that Seattle has one of the best defenses in the league. The 28-year old quarterback did throw an interception, but it looked like a miscommunication more than an errant pass as would be expected from a guy that has been on the team for only two weeks. The knock against Clausen is his past, which is poor to say the least.

With the production being about the same, I have to lean towards keeping Jimmy Clausen as the guy under center. He might not be the answer for this season, but the year is already lost so that shouldn't factor into it. The thing that I believe gives Clausen the edge is that he could come back next season and beyond as the backup to franchise quarterback Joe Flacco.

Clausen is younger than Schaub by 6 years and have familiarity with offensive coordinator Marc Trestman from their days in Chicago. We've also seen Matt Schaub fail to make sideline throws due to his arm strength deteriorating. When looking to judge your offensive weapons, it is best to have a quarterback capable of making throws at all different levels and spots on the field, again giving Clausen the nod.

So when you look at it simply, Clausen is the clear cut winner here. The Ravens can get off easy by saying that Matt Schaub just isn't healthy enough to return, allowing Schaub to walk away with dignity. But make no mistake, I can't see the former Houston Texan being in this league another season.

How the Ravens defense... did.. nothing...

The Seattle Seahawks arrived by storm, and took the castle as their own. The Baltimore Ravens allowed five touchdown passes, and did nothing but watch the Seattle touchdown dances.

Enough with the rhyming, as it's only helping me cope with the misery.

Defensive line: D

The attack was not visible. The abysmal Seahawks O-line looked competent against the Ravens lack of pass rush, or run stopping ability. A fullback gained 19 yards on a single play. The Ravens line also allowed 123 yards. Couldn't stop the running or passing.

Linebackers: D

Daryl Smith with back-to-back missed tackles. Outside pressure never affecting Wilson as he posts his fourth straight game with a 138.5+ passer rating since 1960. Nothing could be stopped.

Defensivebacks: F

Russell Wilson threw for 292 yards and five touchdowns. His QBR was 97.2, and with a 71.8% completion Wilson didn't need to worry. This team showed up on fire, and the Ravens spirits have been crushed for weeks. There was no doubt this game would be bad, but mercy this was quite the showing.

Some fans will take this as an insult added after beating up on the Ravens. I personally take it as a coach that is far to excited about beating up a team that is the equivalent of the kid in a wheelchair right now. Let's be honest for both sides for a second...

This was a team that was down to it's third quarterback. It was starting only one wide receiver that had been on the roster before October 1st. This Baltimore Ravens team had 16 players on injured reserve, the absolute most in the NFL. Of course they got beat and beat badly, I'm not sure there were few people that actually expected it to be close, regardless of what they said.

It's nice to see a coach celebrate with his team and the Seattle Seahawks deserve to celebrate that win. But let's not go crazy now, you didn't beat the number one seed or anything here.

In the biggest loss of the 2015 NFL season for the Baltimore Ravens, they were defeated at home by the Seattle Seahawks by an astounding 29 points. It marks the second biggest defeat in the history of the franchise at home. The loss pushed the Ravens down to 4-9 and officially out of potentially going .500, as well as out of the AFC Playoff race.

However, for all the bad that the game started, there are some things that we learned.

Clausen isn't bad

A lot was made of Jimmy Clausen starting the game, with fans going crazy on here and social media about how the game was going to be a disaster solely because of Clausen. The Ravens backup quarterback didn't rally the team or do particularly well, but he wasn't as bad as expected either. Given that he has only been in this locker room and reading this playbook for about two weeks now, Clausen going 23 of 40 for 274 yards shows that the young quarterback might have something worthy of a second look.

The former Chicago Bears quarterback made some positive throws against one of the toughest defenses in the league. Even though he did throw an interception, it looked to be more of a miscommunication than just a poor pass. Plus, that interception wasn't returned for a touchdown, so by proxy, he's an immediate upgrade over Matt Schaub.

Wide receivers making a case for themselves

Once again, fans were up in arms at the loss of wide receiver Steve Smith Sr. earlier in the season. However, since the veteran receiver went down with an Achilles tear, the younger pass catchers have stepped up. Despite not having franchise quarterback Joe Flacco, veteran running back Justin Forsett, and having to deal with a patchwork offensive line, the wide receivers have done admirably.

Kamar Aiken in specific has turned it on for a few weeks in a row now. While not exactly being the most productive with his receptions, the formerly undrafted wide receiver has caught at least five passes in each game since Smith went on injured reserve. He's on pace for 830 yards on the year on 66 receptions. That won't put him as the Ravens number one receiver in 2016, but it will make him a possession receiver, something the Ravens haven't really had since Anquan Boldin left for San Francisco.

Daniel Brown is another player worthy of additional attention at the end of this season and moving forward. A player the Ravens wanted to keep on the roster after training camp, Brown found his way back onto the roster late this season and has excelled ever since. Against Seattle, he was a major target as Clausen threw his way six times, catching five of them for 47 yards. Against the Miami Dolphins, his true first game, Brown would have a 52-yard touchdown stolen from him by the referees. That reception would have made him 2 for 2 for 69 yards and a score, a great outing by any receiver.

Jeremy Butler is the other receiver worthy of praise. Having been targeted 10 times against the Seattle Seahawks, he hauled in 7 of those for 72 yards. Showing that he can be a slot type receiver that makes things happen once the ball is in his hands, it will be interesting to see what the Ravens do with fellow receiver Michael Campanaro since he can't seem to stay healthy enough to make an impact. All three wide receivers will factor into Baltimore's plans in 2016 in some shape or form, especially since all three can be viable special teams players as well.

Ravens run defense is to be feared

This will be a hot-take since mentioning anything positive about the Ravens defense is apparently treason to a lot of fans. However, when you consider that the run defense did everything in it's power to stop a Seattle power run game that has eaten it's share of teams up, it is worthy of a mention. Though Thomas Rawls did hurt the defense on Seattle's first drive, they settled down and held the rest of the Seattle run game to 82 yards on 27 carries, or just over 3 yards per carry.

Having made Seattle one dimensional for the most part, you'd figure that they would have been able to get some pressure on Russell Wilson or do a better job of coverage on the backend, but alas, 5 touchdowns for Wilson tells that side of the story. Most of the touchdowns just came on Wilson having time to sit in the pocket and wait for someone to get free rather than the coverage just being terrible outright, though that happened a bit as well. It is important to know that the Ravens do have a good foundation moving forward though and with even a little help at rushing the quarterback, the secondary should perform significantly better than they did. It's a moral victory here, but hey the Ravens are 4-9, so that's what you get.

Rawls gets rolled

The undrafted rookie back came out of nowhere to rival guys like Todd Gurley as one of the best backs of the class. Unfortunately for Rawls, the season ended as soon as it started. In the middle of a pile, something happened to his ankle, and we saw him hobble off the field in the first quarter. He would be ruled out quickly for the remainder of the game and then we found out afterwards that his ankle was broken and there was potential ligament issues as well. The Seattle ground attack is seriously jeopardized without him or Marshawn Lynch.

With talk of Eugene Monroe not sticking around next year due to being regularly injured and a cap casualty, Osemele identified himself as an able candidate at the post game conferences. This wouldn't be the strangest thing ever, as Osemele was considered for the position a couple of years ago.
The Ravens are traditionally good at home. The Baltimore crowd is a tough one to play against, with loud manure and "Seven Nation Army" chants surrounding the opponent. This week was different.
Definitely not. But he wasn't that bad. We were all mocking "Pickles" and just waiting for the implosion when he stepped on the field. But it never came. Clausen wasn't spectacular, but he did a respectable job against a tricky secondary.
It's a strange feeling, but the Ravens once again won't be playing extra football for the second time in the past three seasons. This is John Harbaugh's second time missing the playoffs of his eight seasons in Baltimore, and this year also marks his first losing campaign. Week 15 also marks the first time Coach Harbaugh will be playing a "meaningless" game, one in which the Ravens have been completely eliminated from playoff contention.
