Our weekly tape session brings us more miscues and errors, and some straight up bad luck.

Welcome back to the film room, readers. This week's tape isn't much different than what we've seen thus far this season. You've got your classic defensive miscues, the offense making some plays while attempting to rally back, bad officiating, and just some awful luck against the Ravens.

I wish I could be "distracted" on my job and write it off as an excuse.

It was the play everyone was talking about.

On the Ravens' opening drive during this week's edition of Monday Night Football, guard John Urschel was flagged for an illegal formation. However, the replays clearly showed that Urschel established communication with the referee and made it apparent that he was eligible on the play.

Here is the play in question.

Here is the much-discussed part, in which the journal-published mathematician clearly makes his eligibilty known to the official.

By the way... What more does an OL have to do to report? Look at Urschel. pic.twitter.com/OP9ZxDtjX3

So how exactly could such a snafu occur?

The referee was distracted, says the league's head of officiating Dean Blandino.

"What the referee was actually doing at that moment, he was correcting a number from a foul on the previous play, and he just didn't recognize [No.] 64 signaling him. We didn't recognize that he reported, and that's why the penalty was called."

The league's officiating head honcho was quick to note that Urschel followed correct protocol, establishing his eligibility with the official on the field by bringing attention to himself and his number. Said Blandino, "It's important that the referee recognizes that, and it's important that the player gets the visual signal."

I can’t hear what they’re saying out there, but it looked like he saw what we were saying and said something and then blew his whistle. So I just assumed it was all good."-Joe Flacco

There's no doubt that this call (and some other questionable ones) certainly did the Ravens in. For once, I think we are justified in complaining about the refs. Fans and coach alike were both united on this one, as you can almost hear the disdain in Harbaugh's voice.

"Joe looked at it, he saw it, I saw it. Then there was an announcement; you couldn’t hear what the announcement was because you never can."

It seems like the Ravens simply can't come out on the right side of an illegal formation call.

While the Ravens' punishment was a loss, Ronald Tobert, the referee in question, won't be receiving any discipline for this call. For a team that is struggling to churn out a win on a fair playing the field, the last thing they need is bad officiating.

The Ravens find themselves at 1-6 Tuesday morning, but they do have something to be happy about after a season of turmoil and poor defensive play. Well it's still more poor defensive play, but they are improving.

While allowing the Arizona Cardinals to put up 26 points is something that most fans might scratch their heads at, if you look a little closer, you can see a defense that might be starting to gel around each other and play better. Make no mistake about it, the Ravens had poor tackling throughout the game and that can be attributed to 14 of the 26 points Arizona put on the board, and that is something that will have to be addressed and remedied, but I take that more for an aberration than the norm.

The Ravens got after Carson Palmer and applied pressure to him all game long. Despite only having a single solid pass rusher in Elvis Dumervil, the Ravens got 2 sacks on Palmer during the game and could be seen bouncing him around a few more times. The pressure got so much that the Cardinals offense switched over to a quicker passing attack in the second half, relying on poor tackling and the cushion from the secondary to get yards. The key is that even with the tackling issues, they still held a potent Cardinals passing offense to 275 passing.

This is an offense with Larry Fitzgerald who came into the game with 583 yards receiving. Wide receiver John Brown just torched the Pittsburgh Steelers for 196 yards the previous week. Against the Ravens, they combined for 104 yards. Through the 7 weeks of the 2015 NFL Season, Palmer has thrown over 300 yards 4 times, with 421 against the Pittsburgh Steelers just the week prior.

Looking at the run game, if Brandon Williams held running back Chris Johnson for another second or if the refs blew the whistle like they should have, Johnson would have had only 60 yards on the ground. It would have been a 3.52 ypc average instead of the 6.8 that he did get after that 62 yard run on the botched play.

Again, it didn't end in a win for the Ravens, but there is some silver in that lining. With a more aggressive scheme, the cornerbacks Jimmy Smith, Shareece Wright and Lardarius Webb did well enough against a nasty combination of three wide receivers that could easily be the top dog on this Ravens' team. As the season wears on, if the defense can put together that type of performance and lock up their tackling technique, they could end up holding teams below 20 points while the Ravens offense has been averaging 23 points per game.

Small victories folks, we need everything we can get this season.

The Ravens lost to the Cardinals in the final minutes of a game that was surprisingly close throughout the entire contest. However, the main thing noticed all game long was how terrible the refs were. Flags were being thrown for things that didn't happen while flags hit the turf for a lineman not reporting eligible despite him clearly reporting in.

Ravens wide receiver Steve Smith was clearly not pleased. Enough to hit his Yelp app and rate the crew.

Ouch, a 2 star review. Yelp will hit the NFL up to have them pay a monthly fee to remove that negative review like they do most businesses, but it still stings. I can't say that I blame Senior either. Between the eligible lineman, a pass interference call on Lardarius Webb that was just good, clean football, and Brandon Williams apparent need to sit on every offensive player until the refs pull him off, it was a sloppy game not only for the Ravens, but for the striped guys on the field as well.

We here at Baltimore Beatdown won't blame the refs for the loss, but you better believe that the league will be looking at this game and might fine Steve Smith for his comments and maybe the refs for their poor play.

At this point, there is a hashtag trending #ThatsSoRavens for all the stupid things that continue to happen to this 2015 Baltimore Ravens team. Tonight, the Ravens are compiling one hell of a portfolio of them. Here comes another Chris Johnson play where the Ravens can't get him down for some reason.

As you can see, Johnson is brought to the ground. Except that he is sitting on Brandon Williams without ever actually hitting the turf. After what felt like a millennium, Williams let's him go and Johnson rumbles down the field for a massive gain.

WHAT THE FLYING FU*@? I mean what a better representation of the Ravens' 2015 season than this play and even this game so far. The Cardinals lead 20-10 after the Ravens had a chance to go up 17-7 by halftime before a fumble, late flag and poor play all around. Just a weird play inside of a weird game.

That's right, two whiffed tackles and a poor angle taken. Let's publicly shame these players at this point since these are all fundamental parts of playing football.

Tackling has been something the Ravens have been terrible at so far in this game. If the Ravens can't wrap up a player and make some plays here, it's gonna be a long game.

The Ravens are clearly a team that needs all the help they can get. On their first drive, they pulled out all the stops and had backup lineman John Urschel come in and catch a screen pass as a receiver. That's right, the lineman caught the ball and rumbled up the field for some yards!

Then there was a yellow hankie on the floor of the stadium. Illegal formation with the referees saying that Urschel never reported. Cue head coach John Harbaugh being irate at the officials screaming that Urschel clearly reported in.

As if it was any doubt that the smartest man on the field would remember to rub his jersey in the universal signal that he was reporting as eligible. The Ravens would have their drive stall, but they drew first blood, going up 3-0 early.

The odds are most certainly stacked against the Ravens.

Despite the fall from greatness that the Ravens have suffered, Vegas has for the most part, been on their side. The Ravens were narrowly favored last week, and haven't really been forecasted for a blow out loss this whole season.

Until now that is. Vegas really likes the Cards' odds tonight, and it's not even close.
