Baltimore Beatdown - Ravens vs. Eagles Preseason 2015: Baltimore trying to 'ruffle some feathers' in PhillyA Baltimore Ravens Communityhttps://cdn.vox-cdn.com/community_logos/47159/baltimorebeatdown_fave.png2015-08-23T13:06:27-04:00http://www.baltimorebeatdown.com/rss/stream/89550662015-08-23T13:06:27-04:002015-08-23T13:06:27-04:00Terrell Suggs' Hit on Sam Bradford was Totally Clean

Terrell Suggs' hit on Sam Bradford in his return to the NFL was heavily criticized, but he's not at fault.

Last night was the return of Eagles QB Sam Bradford to the NFL. Bradford, who hadn't played a NFL snap in almost a year, was making his Eagles debut after going down with his second ACL tear last year. So it should come as no surprise that Terrell Suggs' hit to Bradford's knee was a big deal. Had it been any other QB, we probably wouldn't be talking about this.

Here is the hit that has caused the controversy.

And a more detailed shot of the impact.

Now at first glance, it seems as if Suggs completely ignored the hand off and went straight for Bradford's knees. This simply isn't the case. While it looks like Suggs had plenty of time to adjust for the hand off on the read option, he really didn't.

At this point, Suggs has started his dive and simply can't correct himself. While these NFL players have great reflexes and reaction times, they aren't superhuman. It should also be noted that Bradford's hip and torso turn to get out of the way made the hit look a lot worse then it actually was. Suggs adjusted to Bradford's movement and made a simple wrap tackle. Had this hit been on a running back, we wouldn't have heard a peep about it.

To add insult to injury, Suggs was criticized for targeting Bradford and making an illegal hit. While the rulebook certainly leaves hits like this in a legal grey area, 2013's rule change seems to clarify a lot.

"NFL Vice President of Officiating Dean Blandino explains that quarterbacks can be tackled even if they don't have the ball, provided they are still carrying out a fake and have not taken themselves out of the play.

"He is still treated as a runner until he is clearly out of the play," Blandino said. "The quarterback makes the pitch, he's still a runner, he can be hit like a runner until he's clearly out of the play."

It will be up to officials to make the difficult determination of whether a quarterback is still part of a play or not. Blandino explained that referees will be looking at posture. If a quarterback looks like a runner, he should be prepared to be hit like a runner. As soon as the quarterback assumes a posture that suggests he is no longer involved in the play, defenses will be flagged for unnecessary roughness if they tackle him."

The play in question was certainly a read option, as Bradford stared down Suggs for the whole play, making the read. This means that Bradford is regarded as a runner, and can be hit like one. Suggs could've legally hit Bradford a lot harder, and he knows it.

Another entry in the NFL's rule book adds even more clarity to the matter, and really provides the final verdict.

Check out 'Note 2'. "It is not a foul if the defender wraps in the knee area". That's exactly what happened.

Nothing puts an end to all the media attention better than a pre-season beatdown...

With preseason game #2 in the books, there must be Ravens fans out their feeling gloomy. I , for one, am not one of them. The Ravens suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of the Eagles, the first team offense never got going, and as a whole the team just did not look good. But I am surprisingly happy about the outcome and how it happened.

Lets take a look at why:

#1- Health

Health is an unpredictable thing, and you never know when an injury is going to strike nor how bad it is going to be. So to make it out of our second preseason game with only few minor injuries is great.

#2- Tempered Expectations

Honestly, the Ravens were getting too much preseason love. Peter King, ESPN, and Teddy Bruschi are just some of the many pumping up the Ravens in the past few months. Bill Barnwell just wrote an article about how they are the favorites to win the North. There is nothing good that can come from higher expectations. We know the Ravens are a good team, but they seem to prefer sneaking up on people.

#3- Working out the kinks

If you dominate all four preseason games, it does not give you much to work on. And at some point during the season a team is going to solve you and take it to you. Better to have those flaws exposed early, and let your coaches have two more preseason games to fix those flaws and go up from there.

#4- Penalties Galore

The Ravens always seem to have one of these games. Maybe they got it out of the way now.

These are among the reasons I am actually happy with the result. It may look embarrassing, but I think it is for the best. Not having Kelechi Osemele, John Urschel, and Rick Wagner, plus Monroe and Hurst getting banged up definitely contributed to the lackluster performance from the first team offense, but Joe has got to limit the turnovers.

Good lord.

If "Yellow Flag" was a player for the Baltimore Ravens, he would've had a roster justifying performance against the Philadelphia Eagles. In fact, with 17 carries for 139 yards, Yellow Flag outperformed everyone on the team by nearly 100 yards.

This was one of those rare preseason games that makes you actually happy that the preseason exists.

If there's anything positive to take away from the beating we were given by the Eagles (believe me, there wasn't much), we can take the "this was a great learning experience" route. Week 1 is less than a month away and you can be sure that the Denver Broncos are licking their chops at our defensive's ineptitude at handling the no-huddle offense. It's probably for the best to have all this awfulness on tape so that the team has something to work on for the next two weeks.

In the meantime, have a flag. Hell, have a hundred:

"It's just the preseason," is what I keep telling myself.

Well. That was an experience. And not a good one. It seems as if the reports from camp about the Eagles being the far superior team were right. The Baltimore squad struggled in practically every facet of game. Let's take a look at some of the story lines that have emerged thus far.

There's Not Much of an Offensive Line To Speak Of

The Ravens starting offense simply couldn't get anything done, and the fault lies for the most part squarely on the offensive line. The injury-riddled unit fielded a bare-bones lineup tonight. In the second quarter, Ryan Jensen, Marcel Jones, Leon Brown, Robert Myers and Nick Easton was the group the Ravens were fielding. When all was said and done and the bleeding finally stopped, the team was left with only nine healthy offensive linemen.

Rick Wagner, Jah Reid (back), Darryl Baldwin, and Blaine Clausell did not dress for the game. Guards Kelechi Osemele (Achilles) and John Urschel (concussion) also did not suit up. In addition to the pre-existing injuries, both De'Ondre Wesley and James Hurst were knocked out of tonight's game. Wesley suffered an unspecified injury, but reportedly limped off the field. Hurst was involved in a collision and has now entered the concussion protocol.

This Ravens unit was praised as one of the best lines in the league, and was expected to be a centerpiece for the team. However, if the group can't even make it into the season healthy, then it's a big concern. The team needs a great offensive line to be good. The 2013 season is a prime example of what can happen when an offensive line goes bad.

Fiasco for Flacco

Joe Flacco received limited action in the game, but was absolutely awful when he was on the field. Flacco went 3-7 with 23 yards and 2 INTs. The first pick wasn't necessarily his fault, a deep lob that was tipped to a defender. But his next two mistakes were unacceptable. An overthrow to a wide open Marlon Brown on a crossing route resulted in his second pick. But Flacco wasn't done yet, and overthew a receiver once again, this time missing a wide open Maxx Williams. Not the greatest outing for Flacco and the whole first team offense, which totaled 69 yards and no points.

The other two QBs on the depth chart, Matt Schaub and Bryn Renner, had much better outings. Schaub went 11/18 for 115 yards, and Bryn Renner built on last week's good showing, posting 158 yards and going 15/21.

Penalties Galore

The Ravens gave up 17 accepted penalties for 139 yards. That is unacceptable on all accounts. Granted, Jerome Boger and his crew seemed to scrutinize the Ravens. But still, the Ravens were giving the refs reasons to call penalties with little small errors. There's no doubt that Coach John Harbaugh will have a field day going over the film and drilling it into these players heads what they did wrong at the line.

One penalty in particular that will fuel discussion come tomorrow morning is Terrell Suggs' hit on Eagles QB Sam Bradford. Suggs absolutely laid out Bradford, with the point of impact being Bradford's knees. Terrell was hit with a 'roughing the passer' penalty, one of three penalties to his name on the opening drive, but the consequences may be even harsher than just that.

Sam Bradford said that he felt Terrell Suggs went after his knees on purpose. I'd expect a visit from FedEx this week.. #Eagles #Ravens

Whether you choose to believe Bradford or not is a matter of opinion. However, considering the league's conservative policy on hits, I wouldn't be surprised to see a nice fine coming Suggs' way.

Special Teams Woes

On the Ravens' side of the ball, DeAndre Carter muffed a return for the second week in a row. You just can't do that.

As for the Eagles, running back Kenjon Barner destroyed the Ravens on a nice 68-yard punt return touchdown. The Ravens didn't stay in their lanes at all, as only Zach Orr got a hand on Barner. Last year's unit didn't give up a single punt return TD. This was Barner's second return TD of the preseason.

On the plus side, kicker Justin Tucker was his usually self, nailing a 48-yard extra point.

Yes, you read that right. Tight end Konrad Reuland was called for a chop block on a two-point conversion, and the 15-yard penalty pushed back the Ravens for a very long extra point attempt. If Tucker had missed it, the play would've been a perfect representation of tonight's game.

Run Defense, Where Art Thou?

Another group of guys that the Ravens pride themselves on didn't show up at all. The worst part is that this unit is relatively healthy. Philadelphia simply ran the ball wherever and however the wanted to, producing 46 yards rushing and two touchdown runs in the first quarter. If you watched the game, the touchdown runs looked like the Ravens defense was the CPU in Madden. It was dreadful.

As a whole, the Ravens first-team defense allowed 14 first downs and 17 points. Not very pretty.

Injury Report

LT Eugene Monroe - was reportedly nursing his hand and lower arm on the sideline.

HB Lorenzo Taliaferro - taken to the locker room after suffering an apparent knee injury. Details have yet to emerge.

TE Maxx Willams - was shaken up with an undisclosed injury, but returned in the second half. I'd like to note that Maxx is an absolute baller. He isn't afraid of contact from what I've seen.

OT James Hurst - concussion-like symptoms after a collision.

OL De'Ondre Wesley - limped off the field and to the locker room with an unspecified leg injury.

The Ravens didn't escape with their pride, and also didn't escape with a completely healthy roster.

The Bright Spots

Yes, I assure you some good did come out of this game.

Darren Waller built on his camp hype, grabbing 3 receptions for 21 yards and a touchdown. The giant 6'6" Georgia Tech product had arguably the best night of any wide receiver.

Asa Jackson did a fine job fielding kicks. No mistakes from him.

Arthur Brown had a nice sack on Matt Barkley. At the moment, it's one of his best plays ever.

Maxx Williams showed grit and determination, grabbing 3 catches for 25 yards. If there was a chance to hurdle someone or extend the play, he tried. Our own Yitzi Weiss also pointed out that he pancaked an unsuspecting Eagles player on an extra point attempt.

The running game was actually pretty decent, despite the offensive line woes. The team posted 150 yards on 33 carries, which translates to a 4.5 YPC average. Terrance McGee led the pack with 44 yards on 11 carries.

Takeaway

Yes, it was ugly. But it was the preseason, and that's what you should continue to tell youself. Some key details that have been left out were the fact that the Ravens intentionally made 'vanilla' play calls, and that the teams' headsets weren't working for the first half.

The truth is, the Ravens weren't going to throw anything fancy at the Eagles. The squad was injury-riddled, and this result was somewhat predictable. Coach Harbaugh and crew have their work cut out for them this week, but this organization has overcome adversity so many times before, and I don't see why they can't do it again.

It's just another bump in the road on our way to lifting the Lombardi.

So many storylines have emerged in the leadup to this week 2 preseason matchup, and both teams will write the rest of the headlines tonight.
It's time to give our fellow 'Bird Bros' a litle time in the spotlight.

Each week, we try to sit down and discuss the opposition with fans of the opposing team. After all, we're just talking heads who don't know their team. They live Eagles football.

So without further adieu, I present some quick questions and answers with members of the community /r/Eagles.

#1: What Eagles players should Ravens fans be keeping an eye on tonight?

"Obvious answers are Bradford, Matthews, Huff, Eric Rowe and Agholor. Tebow and Barkley are battling for the third QB spot. There are quite a few players battling for RG, so whoever is in the game at the position is worthy of keeping an eye on. Ed Reynolds is a safety worth keeping an eye on later in the game. Raheem Mostert and Kenjon Barner are battling for a roster spot and both look pretty good. Eric Tomlinson is an UDFA TE that is also looking like he has a chance to make the final 53."

Those ankle breaking jukes were beautiful. I won't miss having a go for broke slugger of an RB that went for 20 and got -4 all too often when this HC and scheme really need a steady 2 to 4 positive yards on those plays. In other words, I'll take one-cut over a beautiful dance. The difference between regularly facing 2 & 12 vs 2 & 7 can't be overstated."

And that's a wrap. Some interesting and insightful answers from these Eagles faithful indeed. While we may diasgree on things like Dawkins v. Reed, we can both agree that the Cowboys are the worst.

The Ravens squad made it through this week with a surprisingly low amount of injuries. Still, a few key players will be out for tonight's game.

This week, the Ravens made it throught joint practices with a relatively low amount of injuries. Especially considering the casualties in the previous two weeks of camp, with both Matt Elam and Brent Urban going down with torn biceps. But there were still a few key players who have nagging injuries, and are likely out for tonight's exhibition. Who will be missing in action?

Offensive Line is Looking Thin

The unit, one of the best in the league, could be short-handed against Philly's excellent front seven.

Guard Kelechi Osemele has had a 'nagging' Achilles injury that could hold him out. Said Osemele to the Baltimore Sun, "If I had to play a game right now, it’d be tough."

Right tackle Ricky Wagner has been sidelined with a foot injury, missing the last two days of practice. The injury is worrisome in particular due to Wagner's offeason surgery on his foot. His foot was re-aggravated in Wednesday's practice.

The young guards John Urshcel and Robert Myers, who both suffered concussions last week, may be held out or limited as a simple precaution. Head trauma is no joke.

Perriman, Probably Out

Ever since the first day of training camp, the rookie receiver Breshad Perriman has been held out of camp due to an apparent knee injury. The specifics of the injury have changed over the weeks, but it looks to be a sprained PCL. While Coach Harbuagh has been optimistic about him returning sometime this season, don't get your hopes up for tonight. The most recent update on his status has been that he was playing catch with Bryn Renner on the sidelines.

Where's Webb?

The oft-injured tender cornerback has been taking it easy after "tweaking his hamstring" in last week's practices. The injury kept him out of last week's game, and the same may happen this week as well. With Webb being an injury-prone veteran and a key piece of the Ravens secondary, the smart move would be to keep him out.

In the end, it's the preseason, and Coach Harbaugh isn't going to take any unnecessary risks.

“The guys who are going to play have to play, and that’s the way it works,” Harbaugh said. “We’ll have the guys in there that are healthy.”

The season isn't won in the preseason, but it can certainly be lost if key play makers go down.
