The Baltimore Ravens improved to 6-5 with a win over the Oakland Raiders in Week 12. Rookie quarterback Lamar Jackson, who I chose as my MVP last week, has won back-to-back games in his first two starts.

Let’s go to the other side of the ball for my MVP this week. Leading the Raiders 27-17 with 6:11 left to play in the fourth quarter, outside linebacker Matthew Judon exploded for a game-deciding sequence of events.

Judon had only recorded three sacks through the first 11 weeks. This was a major disappointment considering how strong of a finish he had to the 2017 season, totaling eight sacks. In recent weeks, Judon has reverted to his 2017 form.

On 4th-and-8, Judon exploded off the edge, and despite being held on the play, grabbed the arm of quarterback Derek Carr, forcing him to fumble the football. Terrell Suggs recovered the ball and returned it for a touchdown, effectively putting the game away.

If there was any hope left for the Raiders, Judon made sure to crush it on the next two plays by sacking Carr twice more. This made it three sacks in a row for Judon, matching his season total entering the game. After his third sack, Judon ran off the field and into the tunnel, drawing quite the excitement from fans and the sideline.

With the defense failing to force turnovers and generate consistent pressure for several weeks now, Judon stepped up at the right moment, ensuring the victory. Hopefully, this is a sign of things to come and the turnovers will begin to flow.

Vote for your favorite highlight from the Ravens Week 12 victory!

After a shaky start, the Ravens rode Lamar Jackson and Gus Edwards Jr. in the second half to pull away and improve to 6-5 with a victory over the Raiders. Baltimore outscored Oakland 21-7 in the final two quarters and held the Raiders scoreless in the fourth.

Lamar Jackson has given the offensive a spark and provided several highlight plays of his own, but the defense also came up big on Sunday. Check out all the top plays from Week 12 and vote your favorite below!

Cyrus Jones 70-yard punt return touchdown: Baltimore has lacked much of a spark in the return game this season, and Cyrus Jones finally provided it on Sunday. Jones, who grew up in Baltimore, scored the Ravens first special teams touchdown of the season with an impressive 70-yard punt return. Jones did a nice job following his blockers before running untouched up the sideline. His return gave the Ravens their first lead of the game early in the second quarter.

Mark Andrews 74-yard reception: Andrews was only targeted once against Oakland, but he was responsible for the Ravens biggest offensive play of the game. Andrews was eventually tackled at the five-yard line, but his 74-yard reception set up a field goal to give the Ravens a 13-7 lead.

There are only three guarantees in life: death, taxes, and Lamar Jackson gashing defenses every week. Well, not really, but that’s what it’s beginning to feel like.

The rookie got it done on the ground and through the air this week to lead Baltimore to their second-straight victory, this time over the listless Oakland Raiders. It was a great team win and Lamar wasn’t the only first year guy to get involved in the action; let’s take a look at the rookie performances for the Ravens in week 12:

Deja Vu all over again

For the second week in a row, it was the two guys in the backfield leading the way for Baltimore. We already touched on Lamar who threw it for 178 yards and a touchdown as well as two interceptions off tipped balls from throws into right coverage.

Jackson still has a lot of room to grow as a passer, but the potential to do so certainly appears to be there, especially considering where he was in preseason. He also made his hay on the ground again after a close to the vest first half gave way to the first rounder busting a few big runs in the second, including a touchdown run and a long game clincher down the sideline (he finished with 73 total rushing yards).

If this week was a close facsimile to Jackson’s debut, Gus Edwards’ performance was an exact replica. The “Bus” had another huge afternoon, rushing for 118 yards and looking like every bit the every down back that Baltimore has been lacking this season.

The conversation surrounding who should start at quarterback moving forward should be a hot one, but there isn’t even an argument at RB anymore. Edwards should be the guy down the stretch.

Tight ends get loose

Mark Andrews and Hayden Hurst each impacted this game in their own way, with both of them making plays in the same game for what feels like the first time all season. Andrews led the team in receiving yards with the 74 he picked up on a long shot down the sideline that he nearly housed, and Hurst chipped in 3 catches for 25 yards while making a key play on third down to keep Baltimore’s offense moving.

Hopefully we see more of this from these two as Baltimore need all the help they can get building the offense around Jackson (assuming he remains the starter). Regardless, today was a good look at what these two can do for him in the future.

Outside of the first four guys, the rest of the rookie class was relatively quiet. Orlando Brown Jr. got the nod at right tackle again, and while he played solid, he had some killer penalties that he’ll need to clean up moving forward.

The Bama boys, Anthony Averett and Bradley Bozeman, got a little bit of run in this one but nothing to write home about could be said of each. All in all, it was a very solid day for the rookie class as we may have gotten a look at the future of several positions for the Ravens in what was another important victory heading into the home stretch.

In the thick of the playoff hunt at 5-5, the Baltimore Ravens hosted the 2-8 Oakland Raiders for Lamar Jackson’s second NFL start.

Baltimore won the toss, choosing to defer. Despite starting at their own 19-yard line, Oakland was able to drive down the field for an 81-yard scoring drive to open the game. Running back Doug Martin scored the touchdown. It was originally ruled a fumble recovered by C.J. Mosley. However, upon further review, Martin broke the plane before losing the football. The Raiders led 7-0 to start the day.

The Ravens answered back with a 47-yard field goal. Following punts from both teams, Baltimore took it’s first lead of the day when Cyrus Jones returned a punt for a 70-yard touchdown, making the score 10-7.

The Raiders converted a field goal off of the turnover, making the score 13-10.

Unfortunately for Jackson, he would throw another interception on the following drive. After driving down the field, Jackson’s pass to Michael Crabtree in the end zone was tipped and intercepted by safety Marcus Gilchrist. The Ravens entered halftime with a three-point lead.

Jackson responded well to start the second half, leading the offense on a 75-yard scoring drive. Jackson ran the ball in for the five-yard touchdown, extending the lead to 20-10.

It was close until it wasn’t. The battle in Baltimore ended with the Ravens winning 34-17.

Gus Edwards Jr. — Far as anybody else is concerned, the Gus Bus is the starting tailback from here on out. Within a two-week span, the Ravens have replaced their starting quarterback and starting running back with two rookies.

Marlon Humphrey — A dominant effort by the second-year cornerback out of Alabama. Absolutely critical third down stops by the young defender kept the Ravens ahead or within reach during the earlier periods of the game. It is all forgotten after the flashy plays by Suggs and Judon, but Humphrey’s play was outstanding and important to this win today.

Hayden Hurst — The first Ravens selection in the 2018 NFL Draft is finally getting more involved with this offense. He hauled in three catches for 25 yards and is building chemistry with Jackson.

Michael Crabtree — A good revenge game needed a touchdown and Crabtree hauled in one of his easier scores in his career today against his former squad. Good to see the frustration of last week amount to a touchdown this week.

Justin Tucker — Another game, another 47-yard completion.

Ty Montgomery — He’s dynamic, fast and agile enough to get around the edge and slip loose from tacklers. He’s also a great pass-catching tailback with pass-blocking capability. I hope he re-signs with the Ravens because he is a great tool for this offense.

Stock down:

Joe Flacco — Can’t help but put the franchise quarterback in this category, but it’s clear now. Lamar has changed the dynamic of this offense. Before, it was lethargic and the run game was abysmal. Now, the team has produced over 240 rushing yards in back-to-back games.

Alex Collins — Don’t know if he’ll be getting his job back now after Edwards Jr. has crashed racked up back-to-back 100-yard games on the ground. When he returns, he’ll be competing against both Gus and Ty for snaps.

Javorius Allen — He’s looking like the odd man out, as per usual. Fortunately, he’s still getting carries in the game, though they aren’t amounting to much. The Edwards/Jackson mix is bullying squads right now, but Buck has always helped as the spell back.

Ravens medical trainer — Anybody who gets yelled at by Marshal Yanda is getting a stock down. That was terrifying.

Today is a game for the future. As we already witnessed last week against the Bengals, Lamar Jackson is the future for the Baltimore Ravens. He can make a defense break themselves down and second-guess what to do, leaving the field wide open for running lanes for either himself or the tailback. He was capable of burning Cincy with his legs all game as he finished with 119 rushing yards.

Now will be another test for the young quarterback and his team. With NFL film now covering the rookie, can he replicate his performance or adapt to new plays? Ravens fans are confident to certain he can, but today will be the first test.

Not only will Lamar be in the spotlight, but the rookies as a whole are in focus today with multiple starters out with injury. You can expect quite a list of expected performers in today’s game being rookies:

Lamar Jackson

Gus Edwards Jr

Hayden Hurst

Mark Andrews

Orlando Brown Jr.

Anthony Averett

Kenny Young

Bradley Bozeman

Whether they’re filling in or already starting, this rookie class could turn this franchise from on the cusp to in the dance. Today will be another exciting adventure for the future Ravens.

On Friday, the Ravens designated both Joe Flacco and James Hurst as out, leaving rookies Lamar Jackson and Orlando Brown Jr. to fill in their spots. But these won’t be the only rookie replacements today as the Ravens announced their full inactives list:

Ravens inactives list:

DT Zach Sieler

With Collins out for today, this leaves the running back competition up for UDFA rookie Gus Edwards Jr. to get his snaps in one more time. Against the Bengals, Edwards Jr. and Jackson both rushed for over 100 yards.

Also, with the absence of Tavon Young we may see Anthony Averett receive more snaps as he can cover the slot well.

This could be a big game to show the future talent on this roster. Not only do they have a few players filling in for starters, the tight end unit right now features both Mark Andrews and Hayden Hurst, two rookies already on the field getting snaps and building a rapport for seasons to come.

Every week has playoff implications for the Ravens. In Week 12, Baltimore must handle business against a disappointing Oakland Raiders squad. Below, the Baltimore Beatdown staff details predictions for this afternoon.

Sage’s predictions:

Michael Crabtree will record his third touchdown of the year.

Overall, Crabtree has under performed in his first season with the Ravens. He has had a particularly quiet stretch after his 93-yards receiving against the Tennessee Titans back in October. However, the extra motivation of facing his old squad should propel Crabtree into the end zone today.

The Baltimore defense will force two turnovers.

One of the bigger surprises this season has been the lack of turnovers generated by the Ravens defense. Baltimore has not had an opponent turn the ball over more than once since the Steelers in Week 4. Today that will change, with the Ravens exploiting a sub par Raiders team.

Vasilis’ predictions:

The Ravens will rush for more than 200 yards.

265 rushing yards in Week 11 boosted the Ravens season average to 110 yards on the ground per game. This figure will continue to improve against Oakland’s 31st ranked run defense. Lamar Jackson will break off a long touchdown scamper in the first quarter, and Gus Edwards will salt the game away in the second half.

Terrell Suggs and Matt Judon will combine for four sacks on Derek Carr.

After starting fast, Suggs has not recorded a sack during the last three games. Judon is trending in the opposite direction, providing half of his 2018 sack total in Baltimore’s two most recent contests. Both edge rushers will have their way against the Raiders rookie tackles Kolton Miller and Brandon Parker.

Dustin’s predictions:

Lamar Jackson will throw for 200+ yards and two touchdowns.

The talk of Jackson’s first NFL start has been his insane number of rushing attempts. Look for offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg to open up the playbook in his second start. Jackson will prove that he can throw the ball by eclipsing 200 passing yards with two touchdowns through the air.

Gus Edwards will break 100 rushing yards, again.

The most overshadowed story line of last week’s victory was the performance of undrafted running back Gus Edwards. Edwards was the first 100-yard rusher for Baltimore this season, and he will reach that milestone once again this Sunday. The run game is extremely efficient with Jackson on the field, and Edwards’ downhill powerful running style compliments him perfectly.
