After their heartbreaking loss to the New Orleans Saints, the Baltimore Ravens hit the road to face another NFC South opponent, the 4-2 Carolina Panthers.

Baltimore received the ball to start the game. After a few throws from Joe Flacco and a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty from Panthers defensive tackle Dontari Poe, the Ravens were nearing the redzone. A 17-yard run from Lamar Jackson set Baltimore up at Carolina’s 14 yard line. Running back Alex Collins was able to punch it in the end zone with a 14-yard run, giving the Ravens a 7-0 lead.

After picking up two first downs on their first offensive drive, the Panthers were forced to punt. A good punt pinned Baltimore on the 1-yard line, however.

On 3rd-and-1, Jackson missed wide receiver Willie Snead IV, who was wide open. The Ravens picked up the first down on a fake punt, but the play was called back due to an illegal shift on Anthony Levine Sr.

Starting at their 46-yard line, Carolina was able to drive down the field to tie the game with a touchdown run by Christian McCaffrey. Things only got worse for Baltimore on the next drive when Collins was hit immediately in the backfield and fumbled. The Panthers recovered it the Ravens 12-yard line. Two plays later, Cam Newton hit tight end Greg Olsen for an 11-yard touchdown, giving Carolina a 14-7 lead.

Baltimore’s offense was unable to answer back, but a good punt from Sam Koch was able to pin the Panthers at the 1-yard line. It didn’t matter, however, as Newton led Carolina on a 99-yard scoring drive. Safety Eric Weddle tipped the ball on the touchdown, but it landed in McCaffrey’s hands in the end zone, extending the lead to 21-7.

The Ravens had a chance to put some more points on the board before halftime, but the drive stalled and ended in a Flacco interception to safety Mike Adams. The Panthers were able to add another three points to their lead with a 54-yard field goal from Graham Gano. Baltimore entered halftime trailing 24-7.

Carolina was forced to punt on their opening drive of the second-half. The Ravens were unable to get anything going either, as they failed to convert on fourth down.

After another Panthers punt, Flacco had the offense moving. Unfortunately, the drive ended as Flacco threw his second interception of the day, this time to Captain Munnerlyn. Carolina answered with another field goal, extending the lead to 27-7.

Baltimore was able to cut into the lead on the next drive, when Flacco hit running back Javorius “Buck” Allen for a touchdown. The Ravens trailed 27-14 with the third quarter coming to an end.

It didn’t matter for long, however, as Newton drove down the field and scrambled in for another touchdown. The Panthers attempted a two-point conversion but it was intercepted by Weddle, making the score 33-14 with under 10 minutes left to play.

Baltimore quickly went three-and-out on the next drive and allowed Carolina to string together a clock-killing drive which lasted 5:41, ending in another field goal, making it 36-14.

Jackson came in at quarterback to close out the game for the Ravens. Though it was a meaningless drive, Jackson drove the offense down the field to score on a touchdown pass to rookie tight end Hayden Hurst. This was Hurst’s first regular season touchdown and Jackson’s first passing touchdown. Jackson finished 4/5 for 46 yards and a touchdown.

Flacco finished the day 22/39 for 192 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. An embarrassing performance for the veteran quarterback. Collins rushed 11 times for 49 yards and a touchdown. Jackson had the next most rushing yards with 26 on three rushes. Snead led the team in receiving yards with a mere 48.

This was an unacceptable loss for Baltimore as they now fall to 4-4. The Ravens now face the Pittsburgh Steelers in a pivotal divisional match up.

An ugly game ends with Baltimore dropping another matchup, leaving many to wonder if the Ravens are contenders or just pretenders.

After an impressive rushing touchdown by Alex Collins, the offense collapsed. Whether it was an ugly pass by Joe Flacco, a drop by a pass-catcher or a complete lack of protection, the team stalled out. This left the defense at the mercy of Cam Newton and the Panthers offense, which was not pretty. The Panthers scored 27-straight points.

Finally, with their last drive of the third quarter, Willie Snead IV and Alex Collins got a drive together and it ended with a Javorius Allen receiving touchdown.

In the end, it didn’t matter. The Panthers kept their foot to the pedal and won handily.

MVP: Nobody

Nobody

Stock-down

The Ravens defense — They were ranked #1. They ‘weren’t the same Ravens.’

Well, they just received back-to-back thrashings by the NFC South offenses. Cam Newton and Drew Brees both marched up and down the field at will. The defense produced zero interceptions and one sack these past two weeks.

What happened to the four- and five-man pressures? What happened to the turnover creation? The emotion and effort is absent.

The Ravens offense — They’re in shambles. Yes, playing your third-/fourth- string left guard and second-string left tackle isn’t going to make life easy, but you must overcome and figure out ways to still create opportunities.

Overall, the Ravens head home for a three-game home stand. This is where they will figure it out or succumb to four-straight seasons of missing the postseason.

The Ravens travel to Carolina for part two of their tough three-game stretch. Below are bold predictions for how the matchup with the Panthers will play out for Baltimore.

Justin Tucker will record two field goals from 45+ yards.

After a gut wrenching missed extra point at the end of last week’s loss, Tucker will prove why he is still one of the Baltimore’s favorite players and reassert his dominance at the position. In a tight road contest, Tucker will prove valuable, bringing in six points on long range attempts.

Mark Andrews will score his third career touchdown.

The Oklahoma rookie was targeted just once in Week 7, catching an eight-yard pass for a touchdown. On the year, Andrews is averaging 11.6 yards per reception, and the physically imposing tight end should grow his stat line today.

Michael Crabtree will eclipse 100 receiving yards.

The veteran receiver has averaged 75 yards over his last three games and will have a prime matchup against slumping corner James Bradberry. Expect Joe Flacco to feed him targets, as Crabtree goes over the century mark for the first time in a Ravens uniform.

The Ravens defense will corral two interceptions.

After collecting 22 interceptions in 2017, the Ravens have secured just three picks in their last six games. However, often inaccurate quarterback Cam Newton was picked off twice in his last home game against the Giants. Look for Eric Weddle and C.J. Mosley to tally their first interceptions of the season.

Heading into Week 8 of the NFL season, the AFC North remains one of the most competitive divisions in the league. The Steelers reaped the greatest benefit last week without playing, as the Ravens and Bengals lost, handing over first place to the Steel City. Meanwhile, Cleveland will fight to remain in contention for the division.

Baltimore Ravens (4-3)

The Ravens lost in heartbreaking fashion to the New Orleans Saints 24-23, when Justin Tucker missed the first extra point of his career. Baltimore must move on quickly, however, as they hit the road to face another strong NFC South opponent, the Carolina Panthers.

Quarterback Cam Newton has led Carolina to a 4-2 start with his strong performance, throwing 11 touchdowns to just four interceptions while completing 65.6% of his passes. Six-foot five-inch Newton presents a much different challenge for the Ravens top-ranked defense as he leads all quarterbacks with 257 rushing yards and three touchdowns on the ground. Running back Christian McCaffrey has started his sophomore season strong as well. McCaffrey currently has 378 rushing yards, 289 receiving yards and a receiving touchdown. Tight end Greg Olsen and wide receiver Devin Funchess are two big targets for Newton through the air.

On defense, Carolina boasts one of the best front sevens in the league, led by All-Pro inside linebacker Luke Kuechly. The Panthers secondary is the weak point of the defense, ranking 17th in the league. Joe Flacco must target Carolina’s young corners through the air. Either Michael Crabtree or John Brown could have a big day for the Ravens.

Baltimore would improve to 5-3 with a win on Sunday and remain in good position to potentially win the division.

Cincinnati Bengals (4-3)

The Bengals are looking to rebound after an ugly 45-10 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday night. Luckily, they host the struggling Tampa Bay Buccaneers this week.

Tampa Bay currently has the top-ranked total offense and passing offense. Mike Evans and DeSean Jackson are one of the better wide receiver duos in the NFL, combining for over 1,000 yards already. Evans, at 6’5”, has a huge catch radius while Jackson is still one of the fastest receivers in the league, despite being 31-years old. Second-year tight end O.J. Howard is a threat in the passing game as well, catching 20 passes for 351 yards and two touchdowns so far. Cincinnati’s 29th-ranked pass defense will have their hands full in this game.

On the flip side, the Buccaneers own one of the worst defenses in the NFL, specifically in the secondary where they rank dead last in the league. Bengals wide receivers A.J. Green and Tyler Boyd must take advantage of this on offense. Meanwhile, Tampa Bay’s run defense currently ranks sixth in the NFL, albeit possibly a bit misleading.

Cincinnati can reestablish their lead in the division at 5-3 with a win this week and a Steelers loss.

Pittsburgh Steelers (3-2-1)

After a bye week, the Steelers will now host the Browns in their second game of the season. The first meeting between these two division rivals ended in an overtime tie in Week 1, but a lot has changed since then.

Cleveland’s offense has lost two major players since the last time Pittsburgh played them. Both wide receiver Josh Gordon and running back Carlos Hyde have since been traded. Rookie Baker Mayfield has taken over the quarterback position from Tyrod Taylor as well, which has given the team a new breath of life. The Browns currently have the 5th ranked rushing offense, now headed by rookie Nick Chubb. Jarvis Landry has enjoyed a solid season thus far with Cleveland, catching 41 passes for 489 yards and two touchdowns. Rookie receiver Antonio Callaway and second-year tight end David Njoku both have over 200 receiving yards as well. The Steelers pass rush will have to get to Mayfield consistently to throw him off his game.

On defense for the Browns, defensive end Myles Garrett has shown why he was drafted No. 1 overall in 2017, with seven sacks on the year. Rookie cornerback and fourth-overall pick Denzel Ward has lived up to his billing as well with three interceptions and even a blocked field goal. Although Cleveland’s defense isn’t ranked in top half of the league, they are still an opportunistic and stout unit. The last time they faced Pittsburgh, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger committed five turnovers.

A Week 8 win would keep the Steelers at the top of the division with a 4-2-1 record.

Cleveland Browns (2-4-1)

After a close loss to the Buccaneers last week, Cleveland faces the Steelers on the road in a pivotal division game.

Pittsburgh’s offense has improved greatly since the Week 1 match up between these two teams. Running back James Conner has done a good job filling in for Le’Veon Bell, rushing for 453 yards and seven touchdowns. Star receiver Antonio Brown is having another fantastic season with 478 receiving yards and six touchdowns so far. Second-year receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster has over 500 receiving yards and two touchdowns as well. The biggest surprise has been the emergence of tight end Vance McDonald, however. Both McDonald and fellow tight end Jesse James have a combined 548 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

The Steelers defense is tied for the second most sacks in the league with 22. Linebacker T.J. Watt leads the pass rush with six sacks. Linebacker Bud Dupree and defensive tackle Javon Hargrave are next with three sacks each. Pittsburgh’s pass defense is the weakest link, ranked 27th in the NFL. Containing the Steelers pass rush and exploiting their secondary will be key to finding success on offense for the Browns.

Cleveland will remain in competition in the AFC North by defeating Pittsburgh and improving to 3-4-1.

The Ravens will be without one of their starting corners for the second game in a row.

For the second-straight week, Baltimore will be without second-year cornerback Marlon Humphrey (thigh) and offensive lineman James Hurst (back).
When the Baltimore Ravens jumped up to grab dynamic Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson at the end of the first round of April’s draft, the expectation was he would sit at least a year behind incumbent starter Joe Flacco. That’s largely been the case this year, though that doesn’t mean he’s flown completely under the radar in 2018.

Panthers quarterback Cam Newton knows a thing or two about athletic players at the position of signal caller; after all he’s arguably been the best one this decade since being selected first overall by Carolina back in 2011. Naturally, he’s kept his eye on Jackson over the past several years, and had some very complimentary things to say about the young gunslinger ahead of the matchup on Sunday:

“He’s got a little bit more life in his legs than I do. A little bit more wiggle. I’ll be trying to take some notes out of his book,” Newton said. “Very, very exceptional talent Lamar is. I’ve been watching him for a long time.”

It seems logical Newton would have his eye on a young and talented passer with possibly historic athletic potential. Newton was able to parlay his potential into becoming one of the more respected players in the league, having since won an MVP award and appeared in a Super Bowl while consistently guiding Carolina to winning seasons and sustained playoff success.

He sees that type of ability in Jackson and made it known he was happy to see the fellow Heisman trophy winner land where he did:

“I was excited when he got picked when he did,” Newton said. “As he keeps growing in this league, I know his confidence will rise. And hopefully one day, he’ll have the reins to be a starter.”

While it may take a little while for Jackson to get his shot, especially considering Flacco’s resurgent efforts this season, it’s great to see Jackson catching the notice of the rest of the league, especially some of its better quarterbacks. Newton isn’t the first to comment on his promise, as Deshaun Watson has done the same in the past.

Hopefully Jackson develops into that type of player. For now, it’s good to see him receive praise while being a complementary part of the game plan. The Ravens will likely need some creativity to get a victory over Newton on Sunday.

With division races heating up, teams must rapidly make adjustments and improve in order to remain positioned for the postseason. The Baltimore Beatdown standings continue to fluctuate, proving that it is hard to pinpoint what teams will find success from week-to-week. Readers are moving up the board once again and can continue to vote for all games in the polls at the end of this article.

Consensus winners

The Texans will defeat the Dolphins on Thursday Night Football (HOU -7.5)

The Chiefs will win against the Broncos (KC -10.0)

The Steelers will take down the Browns (PIT -8.5)

The Colts will beat the Raiders (IND -3.0)

The Patriots will be victorious over the struggling Bills (NE -14.0)

Houston is on a four game win streak and currently leads the AFC South. Miami’s early success has come to a halt, and DeVante Parker’s agent is calling out head coach Adam Gase in the media. On a short week, the Texans appear poised to continue their winning ways.

With Kansas City and the Chargers rolling, the Broncos are a distant 3-4 in the AFC West. Despite a close finish in their first matchup, Denver simply cannot win a shoot out with Patrick Mahomes.

Cleveland will be worn down from another overtime loss, this time to Tampa Bay in Week 7. The Steelers know Cincinnati and Baltimore are breathing down their neck in the AFC North race and will approach the divisional game with intensity.

The Raiders are stock piling for the 2019 draft, most recently sending Amari Cooper to the Dallas Cowboys for a first-round pick. Gruden has seemingly given up on his first year back with Raiders, leaving nothing but opportunity for the Colts on the road.

Succinctly put, this is a ‘Sharpie’ game for New England on Monday Night Football. Buffalo is a mess, most recently getting blown out by Indianapolis 37-5.

‘Lone wolf’ picks

Frank is the only writer to predict the Jets to beat the Bears (CHI -7.5)

Vas is alone in thinking the Giants will defeat the Redskins (WSH -1.0)

Zach goes against the majority in selecting the Buccaneers to take down the Bengals (CIN -4.5)

Logan is solo in taking the Jaguars over the Eagles (PHI -3.0)

Chicago fought to the bitter end against the Patriots in Week 7, and their 12th ranked defense should be able to overwhelm rookie quarterback Sam Darnold on the road. The Giants may have closed the gap against a less than stellar Falcons team last week, but the majority of Beatdown predicts Washington to extend their lead in the NFC East. Tampa Bay barely got past Cleveland, and while the Bengals have dropped two straight, the Chiefs and the Steelers are contenders in the AFC. Blake Bortles and the Jacksonville offense have derailed the Jaguars defensive prowess. While the championship hangover has not escaped Philly, Carson Wentz still has a 108.1 passer rating this season compared to Bortles’ 80.3.

No rest for the heartbroken

After a tough, one-point loss to the Saints in Week 7, the Ravens travel to Carolina this week. The Panthers are undefeated at home thus far and are currently chasing New Orleans in the NFC South. This Sunday, Newton will be coming off limited practice participation due to a right shoulder injury to face one of the best defenses in the league. It is worth noting that Cam Newton and company defeated the Bengals 31-21 in Week 3. The line (BAL -2.0) favors the Ravens; however, five of nine writers pick Baltimore’s away record to fall to 2-3 on the season.

A matchup at home this weekend against an inconsistent Jets’ unit should allow the former Tar Heel to continue his stellar play.
