On a windy day in Baltimore, the number one scoring offense of the New Orleans Saints came to town to face the vaunted number one defense of the Ravens.

New Orleans received the ball to start the game. Baltimore’s defense stopped the Saints on five different third downs, but New Orleans stayed aggressive, going for it on fourth down all five times and successfully converting four. On 4th-and-1 at the four-yard line, Michael Pierce recovered a fumble from running back Alvin Kamara.

The Ravens offense stalled near midfield and had to punt. The Saints followed with a punt of their own. Finally, Baltimore was able to put points on the board with a 31-yard field goal from Justin Tucker.

Drew Brees responded by leading his offense on a 71-yard scoring drive. Brees hit former Ravens tight end Benjamin Watson for the one-yard touchdown and the 500th touchdown of Brees’ career.

With under two minutes to go in the first half, Joe Flacco found John Brown across the middle for a pickup of 56 yards to set Baltimore up in the red zone. Lamar Jackson was able to run it in for a one-yard touchdown with eight seconds remaining. Tucker’s extra point gave the Ravens a 10-7 lead heading into halftime.

Both teams opened the second half with a punt on offense. Baltimore was then able to extend their lead with a touchdown to rookie tight end Mark Andrews. With the fourth quarter quickly approaching, the Ravens led New Orleans 17-7.

However, the Saints were not done, as they responded with a 75-yard drive capped off by a two-yard touchdown run by Kamara to cut the lead to three points. Prior to this, Baltimore had not allowed a second-half touchdown all season.

After a punt from the Ravens, New Orleans scored yet again, this time a five-yard pass to Michael Thomas. The Saints now led for the first time in the game, 21-17.

With 4:45 left in the game, Baltimore’s offense was unable to convert on fourth down to keep the drive alive. Brees quickly marched his offense back down the field for a field goal, making it a full one-possession game.

Flacco and the Ravens offense had two minutes to tie the game and send it to overtime. After finding Michael Crabtree for consecutive plays, running back Javorius “Buck” Allen caught a pass and scampered down to the 15-yard line with 47 seconds remaining. A play later, Flacco found Brown for a 14-yard touchdown with only 28 seconds remaining, and it seemed the game was heading to overtime.

Unfortunately, Tucker, who has never missed an extra point attempt in his career, chose the absolute worst time to do so. With the missed extra point, Baltimore lost the game 24-23 in utterly heartbreaking fashion.

Flacco finished the game with 279 passing yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions. Brown was the leading receiver with seven receptions for 134 yards and a touchdown.

The Ravens now fall to 4-3 and go on the road to face the Carolina Panthers next week.

In a battle between heralded defense and celebrated offense, the Ravens host the Saints for one of their hardest matchups of the year. Will Baltimore spoil New Orleans’ winning streak or will the Ravens be overwhelmed by their fire power? The Baltimore Beatdown staff outlines some bold predictions for Week 7.

Sage’s predictions:

The Ravens will allow a second-half touchdown.

Coming off a shutout victory over the Tennessee Titans, the Ravens face a far superior offense this week. Through five games, Drew Brees has a 122.3 passer rating, 11 touchdowns and an impressive zero interceptions. Even if Baltimore can contain one of the best statistical quarterbacks in the history of the game, running back Alvin Kamara has the ability to get hot and Mark Ingram has proven to be able to pick up the slack when Kamara struggles.

John Brown will reach the end zone.

Brown had his worst statistical game of 2018 against Tennessee, catching just two passes for 28 yards. His targets went from 14 in Week 5 against the Browns to only 3. His early success hauling in deep balls for Joe Flacco has forced opponents to more heavily game plan for the receiver. With Michael Crabtree re-establishing himself last week, Brown should be able to break out once again.

Vasilis’ predictions:

Drew Brees will not record the 500th passing touchdown of his career.

The Ravens six passing touchdowns allowed this year are the second fewest in the NFL, and none have come in Baltimore. And Brees has yet to toss a touchdown in an outdoor stadium this season.

Lamar Jackson will throw a pass to Joe Flacco.

The Ravens have been setting up a trick play throughout their first six games. Expect a lateral behind the line of scrimmage, and for Flacco to find John Brown deep downfield for a long gain.

Kyle A.’s predictions:

Joe Flacco will throw for 300+ yards.

Much has been made of the Saints top-ranked rush defense; but on the flip side, they carry the 30th ranked passing defense in terms of yards. They’ve also given up 11 touchdown passes on the year, ranking 26th. It would not come as much of a surprise to see the number 10 passer in the NFL throw for over 300 yards, especially considering he is averaging 298 yards per game.

Alvin Kamara will gain 100 yards through the air.

Baltimore’s defense has been pretty strong in both the running game and the passing game for the most part this season. However, there comes a point in time where certain matchups cause havoc for Baltimore’s linebackers.

First, it was Cincinnati’s tight ends. Now, Kamara provides that challenge. The 23-year-old running back averages 70.2 yards per game in receiving. It would be tough to predict that the Ravens linebackers could keep up with his burst and quickness in the passing game.

If the Baltimore Ravens are known for one thing collectively, it is great defensive play. Secondly, they are known as a team that likes to be physical on offense and run the football down the opposing team’s throat.

That has not quite been the case in 2018 even though there certainly has been an uptick in Baltimore’s offensive output, which is a reflection of the front office’s increased investment in the passing game. It is not as if they neglected the running game; Alex Collins proved to be worth building around last season, and Baltimore did so by making a few draft picks along the offensive line. Unfortunately, the results have not been there through six weeks, and if the Ravens want to be seen as a serious threat like the New Orleans Saints, they will need more from the ground game.

In their two Super Bowl seasons, Baltimore got plenty of production out of feared backs Jamal Lewis and Ray Rice. A reliable running game takes pressure off of a quarterback in the same way strong receivers and pass protection can alleviate stress.

While Collins is not expected try to emulate the aforementioned franchise greats, the backfield as a unit needs to make strides. This applies to Collins, Javorius Allen and a third rotational guy that has been a bit of a revolving door thus far. Collins has busted off several big plays this season (including two huge touchdowns last week) and Allen has developed into a very nice situational weapon with an uncanny nose for the sticks. So is there a solution, or are they just going to be stuck in the mud all season?

The Athletic’s Jeff Zrebiec recently discussed the issue in a round table article where he makes the case that the Ravens not only need to run the ball better but make more attempts:

The Ravens talk every week about how that’s going to be a focus and the game starts and the run game stalls. They’ve run the ball the seventh most times in the league, but they rank 25th in rushing yards per game and 30th in rushing yards per carry. Alex Collins, their starting back who was a revelation last year, hasn’t hit the 70-yard rushing plateau in a game this season. While the biggest issue is running the ball better and not necessarily more, offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg could certainly stand to be a little more persistent with his run calls. Already this season, Joe Flacco has the second and third highest totals for single-game pass attempts in his career. The Ravens are 3-12 all-time when Flacco throws the ball 50 times or more, so pass-heavy game plans are never going to be the best recipe for them. They need to run the ball more.

Especially salient is the reference to Joe Flacco’s number of pass attempts. It is well known that Flacco does not have a ton of success with a high volume of passes in games. So what can be done to fix it? Probably a shake up along the offensive line, which will take place by default due to the injury to Alex Lewis.

With an offensive line change and an update to Morninwheg’s game plan, the run game could get more traction this week even against New Orlean’s strong rush defense. Even with their struggles, Baltimore’s backs have been able to make plays this season:

Collins has made plays when presented with the opportunity, and Allen has carved out a nice role in limited opportunities. If the offense can capitalize better on their abilities, Baltimore has a good chance to beat the Saints at home.

A more consistent running game is what currently separates the Ravens from the true contenders. This can be observed by their two losses where a completely imbalanced offensive effort lead to their demise. This is the first season in a long time for Baltimore where the passing game is outpacing the running game, and that has to be addressed moving forward. That way, if there are games in which the passing game falters, a balanced attack can provide refuge for the offense. The Ravens will have to make adjustments today in order to counter Drew Brees’ highly explosive attack.

An NFL roster is an ever changing beast. The ebbs and flows of a season and everything surrounding it dictates that teams will make plenty of changes to their roster.

Whether that’s bringing in known quantities via the free agent or trade market, or drafting young players who may one day compete for a spot, front offices keep their nose to the grindstone year round when it comes to roster churn. However, sometimes the necessary move is the one which takes place in-house.

That is when a player already on the roster enters the lineup as a starter or consistently within the rotation. This is something that obviously always has potential to take place throughout the season.

The 2018 Baltimore Ravens have gotten off to one of their more promising starts in comparison to recent years, posting a 4-2 record through six outings so far. The defense has been exceptional as always and the offense has carried their fair share of the weight as well.

That latter reality isn’t one which Ravens fans are used to. The last couple of seasons have been especially tilted to the favor of the defense, with the roster being built in an imbalanced manner. The offense wouldn’t click, the defense would carry the team for most of the year and it would almost always result in disappointment.

So with the offense finally firing on some of the correct cylinders, why would the team look to make a change almost half way through the year?

Bleacher Report’s Brent Sobleski recently wrote an article exploring this question, pitching why rookie tackle Orlando Brown Jr. is among a few players across the league who have earned more playing time. In it, Sobleski cites Brown’s relatively strong play in limited opportunities given, as well as the inconsistencies of current starting right tackle James Hurst:

Rookie Orlando Brown Jr. spent the majority of preseason at right tackle with the Baltimore Ravens’ first-team offense. James Hurst, meanwhile, played right guard for the injured Marshal Yanda. Once Baltimore’s medical staff cleared Yanda to play, the coaching staff immediately named Hurst the starting right tackle because of his previous experience. It may not have been the right move despite the organization’s four-year, $17.5 million investment in the 26-year-old blocker. Hurst has been inconsistent on the strong side, while Brown has performed well in limited opportunities. “Everyone in the locker room wants to play,” Hurst said, per Penn Live’s Aaron Kasinitz. “Not everyone in the locker room can or will play. Even though two plays isn’t a lot, it’s more than zero. [Brown’s] excited to get in, he’s been doing a good job with it, just getting in with high energy and executing his assignment well.” Brown doesn’t have to outright replace Hurst at right tackle. Another option exists. The Ravens could move the veteran to left guard and unseat Alex Lewis, who may miss time due to a pinched nerve in his neck, according to ESPN.com’s Jamison Hensley. Shuffling an offensive line midseason is difficult, but the goal remains the same: Put the best five blockers on the field. “The coaching staff knows where I’m at as far as playing, and I’m just trusting them and their decisions,” Brown said.

The important point that is that this is a move which may just be made out of necessity. With Lewis currently out with what initially looked like a scary neck injury, Brown may be inserted into the spot tackle while Hurst slides inside.

While Lewis’ injury is thankfully not looking to be long term at the moment, this could be an alignment that could work for the offense moving forward. The interior line outside of perennial all-pro Marshal Yanda has seen its share of struggles. A retooling may be what it needs to kick into gear for the meaty stretch of the season.

While the offense has been much stronger this year, the line has struggled a bit with run blocking and hasn’t been entirely consistent in keeping Joe Flacco clean. If the coaching staff were to ever make a change, the time would be now.

It’s especially not a risky move when considering Brown’s pedigree. The former Oklahoma Sooner likely would’ve been a first round pick if not for a rough combine performance. Playing tackle for one of the top teams in the country while protecting the blindside for high profile quarterback Baker Mayfield means that no challenge should be too big for him.

Baltimore faces their biggest test of the season on Sunday as the New Orleans Saints and their high flying offense come to town. Baltimore’s attack will need to keep pace to win this game and inserting a promising talent like Brown into mix may be just what they need to keep rolling.

Philip Rivers is quietly having a stellar season in his 15th year as a pro, throwing 15 touchdowns to just three interceptions and posting a 115.1 passer rating through six games. In contrast, the Titans were demolished last week by the Ravens and appear to be in free fall with an ailing Marcus Mariota.

While Sam Darnold and the Jets have outperformed expectations, Minnesota is on a two game win streak and looking to make ground in a tightly packed NFC North. Chicago’s loss to the Brock Osweiler and the Dolphins was one of the more shocking storylines from last week, and there is no relief in facing the defending AFC champion Patriots after they were able to outlast the Chiefs prolific offense in a Sunday Night Football shoot out in Week 6.

With each passing week, the scrutiny builds for the New York Giants. Despite break out performances from rookie Saquon Barkley, the Giants are once again stuck as a bottom feeder team. Atlanta is a disappointing 2-4, but Matt Ryan still connects with Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley enough to bring the Falcons aerial attack into the top five.

‘Lone wolf’ picks

Kyle B. is the only writer who predicts the Bills will beat the Colts (IND -7.5)

Logan (once again) is solo in thinking the Rams undefeated season will end when they face 49ers this week (LAR -9.5)

When a franchise has a revolving door at the sport’s most important position, it is difficult to have confidence in the team’s ability to execute, particularly on the road. Derek Anderson, the latest quarterback for Buffalo, has a 20-27 career record as a starter. While Indianapolis has just one victory in 2018, the Colts are scoring almost double the amount of points Buffalo is averaging per game, as the Bills are dead last with 12.7.

The 49ers put up a valiant fight against the Green Bay Packers on Monday Night Football, but that showing alone was not inspiring enough for the majority of Beatdown contributors to pick against the Rams this week. While Sean McVay’s squad is likely to drop a game at some point, San Francisco’s 13th ranked run defense will have a tough task trying to contain Todd Gurley who leads the league in rushing yards.

Can the Ravens keep Brees at bay?

Every time New Orleans and Baltimore face off, it is noted that the Ravens are the only NFL squad Drew Brees has never beaten. Brees is 0-4 against the Ravens; however five out of nine Baltimore Beatdown writers predict the league’s third ranked offense will defeat the Ravens number one defense on Sunday.

Still, the Ravens return from their road trip with a slight edge (BAL -2.5) over one of the hottest teams in the NFL. The Saints have not dropped a game since their Week 1 loss to the Buccaneers, and they are averaging a league-high 36 points per game. If the Ravens defense can contain Brees, Michael Thomas and Alvin Kamara, the national respect they are garnering will continue to grow.

Week 7 of the NFL season will hopefully bring some clarity to the AFC North. Baltimore and Cincinnati have a chance to prove they belong with the top teams in the league. Cleveland will look to rebound from an ugly loss while Pittsburgh enjoys their bye week.

Cincinnati Bengals (4-2)

The Bengals suffered a heartbreaking loss on Sunday to the Steelers when Antonio Brown scored a last-second touchdown. With this loss, Cincinnati fell to 4-2 and is now in danger of losing the lead in the AFC North with the Ravens improving to 4-2. Now, the Bengals travel to Arrowhead Stadium to face the 5-1 Kansas City Chiefs.

Second-year quarterback Patrick Mahomes has led the unstoppable juggernaut that is the Chief’s offense to an unbelievable start, with their first loss coming last week to the New England Patriots on Sunday Night Football in Foxborough. Mahomes is currently a contender for regular season MVP after throwing for 18 touchdowns and only four interception in the first six weeks. He is helped by an explosive arsenal of weapons on offense. Tyreek Hill is emerging as one of the best wide receivers in the game with his game-breaking speed. Travis Kelce is a top three tight end while Kareem Hunt is one of the league’s best young running backs. Cincinnati’s defense was unable to stop the explosive offense of the Steelers a week ago and it will only be harder against Kansas City.

The Chiefs enter Week 7 ranked dead last in the NFL in total defense. The Bengals 23rd-ranked offense will have to outscore Kansas City’s 5th-ranked offense in what should be a high-scoring affair. The Chiefs have scored less than 30 points only once this season. Conversely, Kansas City’s defense has held an opponent to under 20 points just once.

Cincinnati has a chance to prove they are a real contender with a win over the Chiefs.

Baltimore Ravens (4-2)

After a dominating shutout win over the Tennessee Titans, the Ravens now face a much tougher opponent in the 4-1 New Orleans Saints, led by future Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees.

Brees is another MVP candidate, throwing for 11 touchdowns and zero interceptions so far. The Saints offense is ranked third in the NFL in total yards, third in passing yards and 19th in rushing yards per game. Don’t let the ranking of the run game fool you, however, as New Orleans boasts a deadly combo at running back in Alvin Kamara and Mark Ingram. Wide receiver Michael Thomas is quickly becoming one of the best in the NFL at his position and the favorite target of Brees. Baltimore’s defense is ranked first in total yards, second in passing and third in rushing yards per game. Sunday will be a true test for the league’s top ranked defense.

On the other side of the ball, the Saints defense has taken a step backwards from a season ago, though it’s not for lack of talent. Cornerback Marshon Lattimore is still one of the best young corners in the league while Cameron Jordan is still a disruptive force on the defense line with five sacks. New Orleans currently possesses the number one run defense in the NFL as well. Joe Flacco will have to take advantage of their 30th ranked passing defense. Look for slot receiver Willie Snead IV to have a big game against his former team. It is also worth noting that Lattimore’s status for Sunday is still unknown after suffering a concussion in their previous game.

Baltimore has an opportunity to take the lead in the AFC North with a win over the Saints and a Bengals loss to the Chiefs. This would prove that the Ravens belong with the top teams as a true contender in the AFC.

Cleveland Browns (2-3-1)

After a huge win over a divisional rival, the Browns were absolutely crushed by the Los Angeles Chargers in a 38-14 loss. Now, Cleveland travels to Tampa Bay to face the 2-3 Buccaneers.

Despite their losing record, Tampa Bay owns the top ranked passing offense and has several dangerous weapons for the Browns to worry about. 6’5” Mike Evans is arguably a top-10 wide receiver while DeSean Jackson has shown he still has the elite speed to punish defenses over the top. Tight end O.J. Howard is developing into a threat as well in his second season. Cleveland will have to rattle quarterback Jameis Winston with their pass rush. Winston has a history of turnovers and Browns defense leads the league in with 16 takeaways. Defensive end Myles Garrett will need to make his presence felt early and often.

Luckily for Cleveland, the Buccaneers defense is ranked 31st in total yards and last in passing yards per game. Tampa Bay does currently have the fifth best rushing defense, but that could be because it is so easy to pass against them and their games often result in high scoring shootouts. The Browns are 28th in total defense, so this game could come down to one defensive stop.

Cleveland would improve to 3-3-1 with a win this week. With the race for the AFC North quickly heating up, the Browns will have to win often to keep pace, starting on Sunday.

An intriguing cross-conference matchup awaits in Week 7. A pair of contenders will vie for their fifth win of the season when the Saints league best scoring offense squares off against the Ravens top scoring defense. Baltimore is listed as 2.5 point home favorites with a robust 49.5 point total.

New Orleans will be well rested following their bye week. Sean Payton’s team is 7-2 post-bye since 2009 and 8-1 in October since 2016, but have lost four of their last six games on the road. The Ravens have won five of their last six as a small home favorite and sport an admirable 5-1 all-time record versus the Saints.

This contest will feature a pair of former Super Bowl MVP quarterbacks and championship winning head coaches. New Orleans has plenty of star power on offense and an underrated defensive line. To secure victory, Baltimore’s offense must execute in the red zone and on third downs to dictate game script.

Three key matchups:

DT Willie Henry vs C Max Unger

Due to his extraordinary ability to read defenses pre-snap and deliver accurate passes with a lightening quick release, future Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees is a difficult player to sack. He will also have a pair of top notch bookend tackles, Terron Armstead and Ryan Ramczyk, protecting the edges. In fact, Brees has been sacked on less than 5-percent of his drop backs this season.

Fortunately, the Ravens have a few defenders who can provide pressure up the middle. While hybrid pass rusher Za’Darius Smith has rightfully been spotlighted for his impressive sack numbers, defensive tackle Willie Henry does much of the dirty work inside. It is not a coincidence that the Ravens have recorded 16 sacks, more than 60-percent of their season total, since Henry returned to the rotation in Week 5.

Winning the battle on the interior is the key to disrupting the rhythm of the Saints third ranked passing offense.

WR John Brown vs CB Ken Crawley

Despite his small stature, ‘Smokey’ Brown leads the Ravens in yards and touchdowns through six games. He had his least productive game of the season, with just two receptions for 28 yards, in last week’s blowout win. If Baltimore plans to win a shootout over New Orleans’ high octane attack, they will surely need significant contributions from their premier playmaker.

Marshon Lattimore, the Saints top cover man, is questionable to play following a concussion. Even if the former defensive rookie of the year does suit up, Brown should see some opportunities against Crawley. Ranking as PFF’s #102 cornerback this season, his poor coverage is a major reason why the Saints pass defense has allowed nearly 300 yards per game.

With New Orleans boasting the NFL’s top run defense and the Ravens rushing offense struggling, a pass-first game plan is the best way for Baltimore to control time of possession.

ILB Kenny Young vs RB Alvin Kamara

In Jimmy Smith and Marlon Humphrey, the defense does boast the physical cover men capable of limiting elite receiver Michael Thomas. And a stout run defense should minimize the damage from Mark Ingram on the ground. However, Alvin Kamara’s unique skillset is a mismatch against any defense in the NFL.

Kamara has accumulated better than 160 all-purpose yards per game this season, along with six scores. He is a dangerous weapon catching passes out of the backfield with the speed and elusiveness to take every touch to the end zone. Hemming in the scatback will require a team effort spearheaded by athletic rookie ‘backer Kenny Young.

Preventing chunk plays from Kamara could be the decisive factor when the Saints march into the elements of Baltimore’s home stadium.

Baltimore’s defense is set up nicely before their game against New Orleans.

The Ravens have arguably their toughest matchup yet against the Saints on Sunday. Defending a Drew Brees-led offense, along with a one-two rushing punch of Alvin Kamara and Mark Ingram, as well as the outside threat of Michael Thomas will be a huge test for Baltimore’s defense. If they can defend this prolific New Orleans offense, Baltimore’s defense should be considered the cream of the crop.

However, they struggled earlier on in the season against the Cincinnati Bengals’ passing offense, allowing 265 yards through the air and four touchdown passes from Andy Dalton. Since that game, Baltimore has allowed just two passing touchdowns — one from Ben Roethlisberger and another from Baker Mayfield.

The major difference between this Ravens defense and the one that gave up 34 points to the Bengals is their health. Since their debacle in Cincinnati, Baltimore has gotten back C.J. Mosley, Jimmy Smith, Tim Williams, Willie Henry and Michael Pierce back. Four of five players are starters and all of them are key contributors to the team.

Last week, Baltimore produced their first shutout of the season in a 21-0 defeat of the Tennessee Titans. In that game, eight different players had sacks with all sacks coming from different portions of the defense. Linebackers had eight sacks, with defensive backs having two and Chris Wormley was the lone defensive lineman with a sack on the day. Though none of the aforementioned players that returned contributed a sack, they all were able to play a key part in Baltimore’s passing defense.

Currently, the Ravens are tied for first in passing yards allowed per game (188), with quarterbacks passing for just a 73.1 rating against them (first in the NFL) and Baltimore leads the NFL in sacks (26). Though Brees is nowhere near the league leader in passing yards this season (1,658 passing yards, 16th in the NFL), he will still be a tough player to contain through the air. If anyone has forgot, he’s the NFL’s all-time passing leader.

As for Baltimore’s rushing defense, they have stymied rushers as well. Teams are averaging just 82.8 yards on the ground against the Ravens, which puts them at third place in the NFL behind the Philadelphia Eagles and you guessed it, the Saints. The Saints rushing offense is ranked 19th in yards per game (103.2 yards per game).

Altogether, the Ravens have the number one defense in the league. They’ve been able to defend the pass and stop the run at most points during the season. At 4-2, getting another win against a solid Saints offense would be able to propel the Ravens to possibly the division lead with the Bengals taking on the Kansas City Chiefs and the Steelers on a bye.

Before counting their chickens before they hatch, Baltimore’s defense will be tested against the likes of Brees, Kamara and Ingram. With the health that their defense enjoys at this juncture of the season, they could make things shake going forward and their true test begins against the 4-1 Saints.
