We all watched the Ravens outperform the Bills for 60 minutes, but now we get PFF’s grade to agree with our personal assessment.

OFFENSE

Joe Flacco had a strong start to the 2018 season, ranking third among QBs in Week 1 with a 86.8 game grade. Flacco posted an adjusted completion percentage of 90.6, the highest in the league, and fared well under pressure, completing four of five attempts for 44 yards.

“Veni, vedi, vici,” — Joe Flacco, probably

The Ravens’ new-look receiving corps had a mixed afternoon despite the blowout score. WRs Michael Crabtree, John Brown and Willie Snead IV each got on the scoresheet, and rookie TE Mark Andrews rated the highest at 74.4. Crabtree and TE Nick Boyle both dropped two passes apiece however.

I don’t like the drops. I mentioned this in my last post, but failed plays hurt. A terribly rainy day excuses them.

DEFENSE

The Ravens’ secondary proved that they can live without Jimmy Smith during his suspension, allowing only 98 passing yards in total and notching two interceptions and five pass breakups. Second year CB Marlon Humphrey shone the brightest, giving up only two-of-six passes thrown into his coverage for six yards and two pass breakups.

They played a lesser opponent and not only kept them locked down, they kept their offense from a first down for a full half and under 100 passing yards over the entire game. Marlon played side-by-side with his opposition.

DI Michael Pierce was the star performer on the front seven. He recorded one hit and four hurries, ranking him fourth in pass rushing productivity among interior defenders in the league in Week 1.

We’ve all praised Terrell Suggs, Za’Darius Smith, Tavon Young and Tim Williams for their pass rush tallies, but Pierce caused an incredible amount of disruption. These are the men in the trenches with the dirty, unheralded work.

Flacco and a trio of new receivers shone in their Week 1 debut

While Baltimore is known for their running game, which produced 117 yards and three touchdowns, and a stout defense, which held the Bills to just three points on the day, the passing offense stole the show from the outset of the game.

Joe Flacco seemed to knock off the rust he showed last season against the Bills, going 25-for-34 and throwing for 236 yards and three touchdowns. Finishing with a 121.7 passer rating, Flacco showed signs of returning to his Super Bowl MVP-caliber play.

Starting on their own 20 in the first quarter, Flacco threw consecutive strikes to Nick Boyle for a 25-yard and 11-yard gain. After an Alex Lewis holding call set Baltimore back to 2nd and 26, Flacco threw a 29-yard pass to John Brown to dig the Ravens offense out of a hole.

After hitting Mark Andrews for another 11-yard first down, Boyle for another a four-yard pass and a Flacco run up the middle for three yards, the series finished with Alex Collins rushing in for the touchdown. With Flacco’s passing as a catalyst, Baltimore ultimately burned 6:18 off the clock on a successful opening drive to give them a 7-0 lead. He consistently progressed downfield and delivered solid passes to his receivers. He climbed the ladder in the pocket and showed more mobility. In addition, Brown’s ability to get open and catch the ball after the play gave Baltimore a new dynamic.

Not to be lost in the fray was Boyle’s new and improved route-running ability. Known as a blocking tight end, he showed more quickness and agility in the passing game than in the past. The 25-year old finished with three catches for 40 yards (13.3 yards per reception), all of which came on the first drive.

Flacco connected with all three of Baltimore’s free agent receivers for a score in Week 1, and he spoke highly of the new additions.

“I feel really good,” Flacco said of his new receivers. “John [Brown] is a different type of player - just with his speed and what he does to defenders and the relationship he gets with those guys. Crabtree [Michael] has a special way of running routes and getting in position and making big catches. Willie [Snead IV] is an easy guy to get on the same page with - from and early point - just because he does everything so much the right way. He’s been in a good passing offense and he just knows where to be. You have to give a lot of credit to those guys.”

It began with Baltimore’s third offensive drive. With a first and goal, Flacco dropped in a pass to Maxx Williams for a one-yard gain, before throwing an incomplete pass to Brown over the middle. However, the quarterback-receiver duo made up for it on their next play, with Flacco hitting Brown over the middle for a seven-yard touchdown pass.

“They were in zone and I came open in the back,” Brown said of his touchdown catch. “Joe Flacco made a pretty good throw in the back of the endzone.”

Touting a 20-0 lead with just 2:48 remaining in the half, the offense started with the ball back at Baltimore’s 15. Flacco completed a six-yard pass to Crabtree for his first catch as a Raven and would hit him on the next play for a 20-yard gain to take Baltimore into the two-minute warning.

Then with 0:17 seconds remaining, Flacco tossed his second touchdown pass to Crabtree, who tapped danced in the back left portion of the end zone. Though Baltimore failed the two-point conversion attempt, the passing offense was totally in-sync.

“[Joe] Flacco threw it up, I came down with it,” Crabtree said postgame. “ Just making a play. It’s football. You’ve got to make a play. It’s something we practice on, getting those feet down, controlling the ball [and] staying in-bounds.”

In the third quarter, Flacco hit Boyle for a three-yard touchdown pass, but it was nullified by a pass interference call on Snead IV, putting Baltimore back 10 yards. Snead IV immediately made up for his error, catching a pass and going across the middle for a 13-yard touchdown to put Baltimore up 33-0 with Tucker’s PAT.

“Joe [Flacco] wasn’t making me feel too good about that one,” Snead IV said of taking away Boyle’s first career touchdown grab. “I was just trying to do my job and it was just kind of a ticky-tack call, but the next play - I will take advantage of it every time.”

Despite being pulled early in the third quarter to give Jackson some reps, Flacco ended up connecting with eight different players. He hit three receivers (Brown, Crabtree and Snead IV), three tight ends (Boyle, Andrews and Williams) and two of his running backs (Allen and Collins).

The key word of the day for Baltimore’s passing offense: clinical.

The Ravens finish their preseason 6-0 with a 47-3 blowout victory against the Buffalo Bills.

MVP: Joe Flacco

This elite quarterback dominated the Bills’ defense with throws to his tight ends, running backs and new receivers. Flacco left the game midway through the third quarter with a statline of: 25/34, 73.5%, 236 yards, 3 TDs, 1 sack, 121.7 QBRating. Who knew pairing Joe with NFL-caliber receivers would work?

Stock-up

Michael Crabtree — Two bad drops but made up with a toe-tapping touchdown. Overall, a solid day by Crab.

John Brown — He’s not just a deep threat. He’s a touchdown-scoring machine.

Willie Snead IV — Scored the hat-trick for Joe and caught a couple more passes.

Nick Boyle — The first drive featured three catches by Boyle for forty yards. Solid performance by the Delaware product.

Justin Tucker — Two field goals on this rain-soaked turf and notching four more PATs. Tuck stays perfect.

Za’Darius Smith — Week 1 in a contract year and the pass-rushing linebacker notches two sacks.

Tavon Young — The nickel cornerback returned with two sacks! Great work by the slot corner.

Terrell Suggs — He would not be denied. Great pressures and a single sack added to his incredible total.

Tim Williams — A redzone sack by the sophomore linebacker. He looked sharp in the preseason and it is transferring to live play.

Brandon Carr — A great pick and he nearly took it to the house afterwards.

Tony Jefferson — An easy pick fell into his arms and the safeties didn’t allow anything deep all day.

Sam Koch — This man laughs in the face of mother nature as his punts flipped the field every time, including a 63-yard bomb.

Marlon Humphrey — With Jimmy Smith out, the Ravens needed the sophomore to step up. He did so, producing back-to-back pass breakups.

Kenneth Dixon — A decent performance by Dixon in garbage time. He demonstrated his tackle-breaking ability and the moves which we all love to see when he’s healthy. Unfortunately, he suffered an injury before the game ended. Hopefully it is nothing serious.

Stock-down

Alex Collins — Not a good game for the starting tailback as he finished with only seven carries for 13 yards and a lost fumble. He did score a touchdown, though. Thankfully, the game plan didn’t need more rushing attack with Flacco’s stellar performance.

Janarion Grant — It’s a terribly rainy day, but you can’t fumble the football. Ball security is vital.

While the Ravens are heavily favored to win their home opener against the Bills, the Baltimore Beatdown staff has some unconventional thoughts about how players will perform and how story of the game will take form.

Vasilis’ predictions:

Tavon Young secures a pair of interceptions.

Assuming the Ravens secure an early lead, a turnover prone Nathan Peterman will be forced to play catch up. With the Ravens pass-rush bearing down, he will target his slot receiver, which will play into Young’s hands perfectly, who is primed for a huge season.

Joe Flacco passes for less than 200 yards.

Buffalo’s strength is their secondary, and Joe Flacco will be under pressure if the Ravens start James Hurst at right tackle and Matt Skura at center. Furthermore, the first team offense only played a handful of drives together in the preseason. Those hoping for an offensive breakout will be disappointed in Week 1.

Justin Tucker knocks four field goals through.

Alex Collins will find some running room, but rookie linebacker Tremaine Edmunds’ speed will eliminate the possibility of a long scoring run. As the field shrinks, the Ravens offense will continue their recent trend of settling for field goals. Justin Tucker starts the season a perfect 4/4.

Dustin’s predictions:

The Ravens defense records six sacks and four turnovers.

The Bill’s offensive line is a mess, and Baltimore’s pass-rush will have no problem getting to the backfield. Terrell Suggs, Matthew Judon and Za’Darius Smith will make life a living hell for quarterback Nathan Peterman, who will make several errant throws, resulting in interceptions. Expect Suggs to come away with his notorious strip sack as well.

Peterman is benched in favor of Josh Allen.

After turning the ball over several times, Buffalo will opt to see their rookie quarterback play. Last year, the Texans inserted Deshaun Watson halfway through their first game after a terrible performance from Tom Savage, and the Bills will follow suit in Week 1 of 2018.

Orlando Brown Jr. ends the game as the starting right tackle.

James Hurst is currently the starter at right tackle, but that could change before the end of this game. If Hurst struggles, look for Brown to replace him. If Matt Skura struggles at center like he has all preseason, then Alex Lewis would likely move from left guard to center, Hurst would move to left guard and Brown would then step in at the right tackle.

Frank’s predictions:

Joe Flacco catches a touchdown pass...from Lamar Jackson.

There have been talks about potential “two-quarterback” plays in the training camp, but Flacco and Jackson were never on the field together during the preseason. Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg surely has some tricks plays up his sleeve, and he will pull one out in Week 1. Lamar Jackson’s first career regular season touchdown pass will go to Joe Flacco.

Janarion Grant scores on a special teams return.

Undrafted rookie receiver Janarion Grant showed enough flashes in the preseason to secure a roster spot. Grant will begin the year as the primary return man on special teams, and he could catch the Bills by surprise. Grant is speedy and elusive, making a kickoff or punt return to the house on Sunday a likely prospect.

Tim Williams records three or more sacks.

Williams had a breakout preseason performance, which will continue in Week 1. With all the attention on Suggs and Judon, Williams will make the most of his snaps. The Bills suspect offensive line will struggle to contain Williams coming off the edge, and he will bring Nathan Peterman down multiple times.

Sage’s predictions:

Someone not named Michael Crabtree leads Baltimore in receptions.

In need of offensive weapons, the Ravens transformed their receiver corps this offseason. While Pro Football Focus ranks the improved unit just 23rd in the league, Michael Crabtree, Willie Snead and John Brown are all considered massive upgrades for Flacco. The Bills will be keyed in on Crabtree as the number one wide receiver, opening up opportunities for Snead and Brown. Some fantasy football owners may be disappointed when Snead, Brown or even a tight end surpasses Crabtree for receptions in this contest.

LeSean McCoy rushes for less than 100 yards.

Baltimore’s run defense struggled in 2017; however, the return of a healthy Brandon Williams should be a huge win for the defensive line, upgrading the Ravens run stopping abilities. Coming off a tumultuous offseason clouded with personal issues, expect a down game from McCoy. With Buffalo starting an unreliable quarterback, Baltimore knows that the Bills will look to the run game for easy offense and have hopefully game planned accordingly.

A quick preview of all four AFC North challengers for Week 1

With the NFL regular season officially underway, here is a preview of every team in the AFC North for Week 1.

Pittsburgh Steelers

The reigning division winning Pittsburgh Steelers will face the previously winless Browns to begin the 2018 season. Pittsburgh has been a source of controversy this offseason regarding the contract of star running back Le’Veon Bell. Bell is expected to miss the opener against Cleveland and it’s possible he could extend his holdout deep into the season. The Steelers will look to second-year running back James Conner to step up in Bell’s absence, though his absence will certainly be felt.

Pittsburgh has several new acquisitions on defense, including veteran safety Morgan Burnett, linebacker Jon Bostic and rookie safety Terrell Edmunds. The Steelers’ defense suffered a huge blow last season with the injury to linebacker Ryan Shazier. Pittsburgh also parted ways with veterans Mike Mitchell at safety and cornerback William Gay. The most notable departure was offensive coordinator Todd Haley, who is now with the Browns.

The Steelers will look to come out firing against an improved Cleveland team as they work towards winning the AFC North division title for the third year in a row.

Cincinnati Bengals

The Bengals will face the Colts this Sunday in a game of two teams hoping to rebound from disappointing seasons. Quarterback Andrew Luck is returning for Indianapolis, but if the preseason is any indication, Luck will take some time to return to his top form. Cincinnati will look to capitalize off this and limit Luck in this match up.

Second-year running back Joe Mixon is pegged to have a big year for the Bengals. Also, 2017 first-round pick wide receiver John Ross hopes to prove himself on the field after an injury-riddled and lackluster rookie season. A.J. Green is still one of the best receivers in the game and star tight end Tyler Eifert is returning from injury. Cincinnati’s offensive line has been upgraded with the signing of left tackle Cordy Glenn and drafting of center Billy Price in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft. Glenn has been dealing with an injury but it looks like he will play against the Colts.

Head Coach Marvin Lewis is facing a critical season in 2018. If the Bengals fail to make the playoffs again, Lewis’ long tenure in Cincinnati could finally come to a close.

Cleveland Browns

After going 0-16 last season, the Browns will look to prove that this is a new team. Tyrod Taylor was signed in free agency and will start for Cleveland this Sunday. With Taylor serving as a bridge quarterback, the Browns drafted Heisman-winning quarterback Baker Mayfield with the first-overall pick in the draft. They also selected Denzel Ward, the top cornerback in the draft with the fourth overall pick. Other notable acquisitions include running backs Carlos Hyde and Nick Chubb and wide receiver Jarvis Landry.

Second-year first-overall pick Myles Garrett is poised to become a premier pass rusher in the NFL and second-year tight end David Njoku is set for a breakout season. The biggest loss Cleveland suffered this offseason was the retirement of future Hall of Fame left tackle Joe Thomas. Rookie Desmond Harrison has been named the starter at left tackle for Sundays’ game against Pittsburgh. The loss of Thomas cannot be understated.

Head Coach Hue Jackson is on the hottest seat possible after only winning one game in the past two seasons. Jackson must turn things around in 2018 with the new influx of talent added this offseason. The Browns could shock the league with a Week 1 upset over the Steelers.

Baltimore Ravens

Missing the playoffs for three straight years has led to an all-or-nothing season for Head Coach John Harbaugh and quarterback Joe Flacco. After drafting Heisman-winning quarterback Lamar Jackson in the first round of the draft, Flacco knows he must perform better this year or it could very well be his last in Baltimore. The Ravens return all starters on defense and will look to improve on a unit which led the league in turnovers a year ago.

Baltimore looks to provide Flacco with better weapons this year including wide receivers Michael Crabtree, John Brown and Willie Snead IV, as well as rookie tight ends Hayden Hurst and Mark Andrews. The offensive line will benefit from the return of All-Pro guard Marshal Yanda after missing most of last season. The biggest absence for the Ravens is star cornerback Jimmy Smith, who is suspended for the first four games of the season for violating the leagues’ personal conduct policy.

Baltimore knows it must make the playoffs this season or major changes will occur. The Ravens face Buffalo on Sunday, who many predict to be among the leagues’ worst teams this season. The Bills will start quarterback Nathan Peterman over rookie Josh Allen. Peterman threw five interceptions in one half against the Chargers last season, so Baltimore’s defense will look to force a similar outcome.

1. Nathan Peterman is starting for the Bills. How confident are you with this decision? How confident is your fanbase?

For the now, I am not confident that Peterman can go out there and win even eight games this season. What I am confident in is that it is the right move for the future. Our talent on offense is some of the weakest in the league and throwing Josh Allen into that warzone would not benefit him in the slightest.

2. From what I’ve read, the Bills’ offensive line doesn’t look like their strength for 2018. Can you see them capable of containing Brandon Williams, Terrell Suggs, Matt Judon and the rest of the Ravens front seven?

If the Bills do what I think they will and have done with Nathan Peterman in the preseason, that being getting the ball out of his hand as fast as possible, I think the Bills can limit their effectiveness. Doing that also makes Peterman predetermine where he goes with the ball which is what has gotten him in trouble in the past so that is another element to look out for. Does that mean they won’t have success? No, but the damages won’t be as bad for the Bills if they are able to do that. LeSean McCoy is going to be LeSean McCoy regardless. Sure, the Ravens line has the ability to keep him in check but my main focus is on how early and often they can make Peterman uncomfortable.

3. The Bills drafted Josh Allen in the first round. Is this team looking to rebuild around him or are they trying to get back into the postseason this year?

Bills’ coach Sean McDermott will never say this and never advertise it but I fully expect this to be a rebuilding year for the Bills. The 17-year drought is over and that monkey is off their back. I think that makes McDermott and GM Brandon Beane feel less pressure to get back to the postseason this year. Offensively, there is still a ton of rebuilding to do as it is and the team as a whole has little to no depth that you can be confident in.

4. The biggest matchup I see on this roster comes from the interior rush from the Bills and the expected weakness of the Ravens interior offensive line. Do you see Kyle Williams and Star Lotulelei breaking through?

Star and Kyle are as gritty as they come and both of them have some sort of success against any offensive line they go against. Star doesn’t make a ton of noticeable plays because he is playing a one-tech most of the time and eats double teams but his presence is felt. Kyle, on the other hand, will have some opportunities to win one-on-ones with the interior offensive line.

5. Tre’Davious White was a star rookie corner last year, outplaying Marlon Humphrey in quite a few areas. Are you expecting a sophomore slump or another great season?

I think any time has a rookie season as successful as Tre had last season, expectations can become overwhelming in a hurry. I don’t expect him to have a sophomore slump but I don’t expect him to turn into the best cornerback in the NFL overnight. It’s only his second season and he has all the tools to have a great career but I don’t want to put the pressure on him that he has to be a Revis-like guy in coverage because that is what fans will expect from him this season.
