The Ravens were originally supposed to pick at No. 136 overall late in the fourth round but after trading back with the Arizona Cardinals that saw them pick up a 2022 fourth round pick while parting with No. 210 overall in the sixth round this year, they land another versatile defensive back with a lot of upside.
Wade could’ve been an second or maybe even first round pick if had declared for last year’s draft following a great 2019 season but he opted to return to school and take his turn as the Buckeyes’ top cornerback.
He moved to the outside in 2020 after dominating in the slot in the year before to the detriment of his draft stock as he battled through injuries and family issues off the field. Despite his struggles last season, Wade was still able to record 34 total tackles including one for loss, four pass break ups, two interceptions and a touchdown.
The Ravens are getting tremendous value with Wade this late in the draft because in addition to playing in the slot at a high level, he can also play some safety as well matching up on wide receivers and tight ends. With current starting nickel, Tavon Young, coming off the third season ending injury of his career and second in consecutive seasons, Wade will provide injury insurance, quality depth and a possible succession plan at the position.
