Countdown to Week 1: No. 74, OL Tyre Phillips

The second rookie to grace the countdown

NFL: Combine Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

The offensive line theme continues as we reach Day 74: Tyre Phillips.

How Phillips Became a Raven

The Baltimore Ravens picked Phillips with their third, third-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft (No. 106 overall). He was the first of two offensive lineman picked by the Ravens in the draft.

College Career

Phillips originally started in junior college as a standout offensive lineman with East Mississippi Community College in 2016. After a standout season, Phillips was named to the All-Region 23 squad and regarded as the best guard in JUCO ranks by 247Sports. He eventually moved on to join Mississippi State, where he played in 26 total games and started all 13 his senior season.

Outlook for 2020

Though Marshal Yanda is gone, I don’t expect this young rookie to join the starting unit quite yet. The overwhelming competition will be exciting to watch unfold but it’s hard to believe the rookie will overtake the likes of Bradley Bozeman, Ben Powers, D.J. Fluker and Patrick Mekari. However, if he’s capable, I’ll happily root for the big man as he was grinning ear-to-ear when I asked how excited he was to be picked by a team that loves running the football.
