Ravens 2019 Draft Likes & Dislikes: OL Ben Powers

I continue this series with one of the most-liked draft picks in the 2019 class: Ben Powers.

Rd. 4, Pick 123: G Ben Powers

Likes: The tenacity. The desire to dominate. These are things that can’t be taught. This kind of competitive spirit is reminiscent of Ryan Jensen and Za’Darius Smith, which positively impacted training camp and the overall morale on the gridiron. As for Ben’s play, he’s not all talk. His force and drive can push ahead, which is exactly what this offense needs at left guard. Here he is with fellow Raven Orlando Brown Jr. bulldozing the defensive line in the redzone.

Dislikes: Powers needs to develop, as most later-round draft picks do. The problem is Baltimore needs blockers now. Lamar Jackson needs protection now. Everybody knows teams with middling-to-bad offensive lines can only go so far. Yes, the tackle situation is one of the best in the NFL, but after Yanda, there is much to be desired. If the veteran linemen can’t step up, it will thrust Powers into the lineup quickly and this 16-game schedule isn’t a cakewalk.
