While free agency isn’t necessarily over, the initial frenzy has winded down and the dust has settled. Now, with the NFL draft just weeks away, the Ravens find themselves in an interesting spot compared to other teams around the league.
Earlier this week, ESPN released their post-free agency power rankings. Despite winning ten games and securing the AFC North crown last season, analysts view the Ravens as the 13th-best team in the NFL, at least based on how things currently stand. The full list of teams ranked ahead of Baltimore are as follows:
- New Orleans Saints
- Los Angeles Rams
- New England Patriots
- Kansas City Chiefs
- Los Angeles Chargers
- Chicago Bears
- Indianapolis Colts
- Philadelphia Eagles
- Cleveland Browns
- Dallas Cowboys
- Houston Texans
- Seattle Seahawks
It’s important not to put too much stock into these rankings, but they’re interesting nonetheless. Out of all the teams listed above, seven teams finished with a better record than Baltimore last season. Three teams - Colts, Seahawks, Cowboys - won the same amount of games (10).
The Browns (7-8-1) and Eagles (9-7) also placed higher than the Ravens despite finishing with a worse record last season. Cleveland has made big headlines so far this offseason, namely by trading for wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. There is a significant amount of hype surrounding the Browns right now, so much so that almost all pundits and outlets have them penciled in as the undisputed favorite to win the division.
ESPN’s power rankings also see the Pittsburgh Steelers at 16th, just a few spots below Baltimore, and the Bengals at 28th. If the division ended up playing out like this, the Browns would be the only team from the AFC North to earn a postseason berth. However, until further notice, the division crown still belongs to the Ravens.
