With the 2018-19 season now in the books for the Baltimore Ravens, the staff of Baltimore Beatdown decided to vote for their choices of various awards on the year.
Most Valuable Player: QB Lamar Jackson
:no_upscale()/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/13672432/usa_today_11951883.jpg)
Over half of the voters chose rookie quarterback Lamar Jackson as the 2018 MVP of the Ravens. Jackson replaced 11-year veteran quarterback Joe Flacco after the bye week, leading a 4-5 team to 10-6 and the first division title since 2012. While Jackson has many areas to improve upon, it’s undeniable that he sparked an otherwise lifeless team and helped snap a three-year playoff drought in Baltimore.
The verdict:
- Lamar Jackson - 62.5%
- Marlon Humphrey - 25%
- C.J. Mosley - 12.5%

Offensive Player of the Year: OG Marshal Yanda
:no_upscale()/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/13630837/usa_today_11856988.jpg)
Yanda missed the majority of the previous season, leaving many wondering how he would respond at 34-years old. Yanda resumed his usual dominance in 2018 and was an anchor for the offensive line at right guard. Yanda’s presence was huge for first-year center Matt Skura and rookie right tackle Orlando Brown Jr. Every year that Yanda plays is a year closer to wearing a gold jacket in Canton, Ohio.
The verdict:
- Marshal Yanda - 62.5%
- Lamar Jackson - 12.5%
- Ronnie Stanley - 12.5%
- Gus Edwards - 12.5%

Defensive Player of the Year: CB Marlon Humphrey
:no_upscale()/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/13630575/usa_today_11857138.jpg)
Humphrey was the Ravens best cornerback in a year where the top four on the depth chart all played well. With Jimmy Smith suspended for the first four games, Humphrey quickly established himself as the teams’ true top corner. Humphrey had an impressive year breaking up passes and finished with two interceptions. Aside from a game or two this season, Humphrey was lock down.
The verdict:
- Marlon Humphrey - 62.5%
- C.J. Mosley - 25%
- Terrell Suggs - 12.5%

Rookie of the Year: TE Mark Andrews
:no_upscale()/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/13695920/usa_today_11950899.jpg)
When Baltimore selected two tight ends in the draft, most assumed it would be the first round pick Hayden Hurst who contributed immediately. The opposite was the case, however. Andrews smashed the Ravens rookie tight end record for receiving yards with 552 as well as three touchdowns. Andrews was a go-to target for both Flacco and Lamar and has proven to be the most reliable pass-catcher on the team for now.
The verdict:
- Mark Andrews - 62.5%
- Lamar Jackson - 25%
- Orlando Brown Jr. - 12.5%

Breakout Player of the Year: OLB Za’Darius Smith
:no_upscale()/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/13695921/usa_today_11890838.jpg)
In a contract year, Smith delivered with a team-leading 8.5 sacks. Smith was used in a variety of ways on defense, including as an interior pass rusher. Smith was the best pass rusher on the team this season and now he will be rewarded with a new contract, whether it be from Baltimore or another team in free agency.
The verdict:
- Za’Darius Smith - 37.5%
- Gus Edwards - 25%
- Patrick Onwuasor - 25%

Most underrated player: CB Brandon Carr
:no_upscale()/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/13695922/usa_today_11891370.jpg)
At age 32, Carr has never missed a start in his NFL career. While he isn’t the most talented or flashy corner on the team, Carr has certainly been the most consistent for the Ravens in his two years here. Carr also played slot corner for the injured Tavon Young this year, where he didn’t miss a beat. Having Carr, Humphrey, and Smith allowed for a rotation at outside corner which kept all three fresh and healthy.
The verdict:
- Brandon Carr - 37.5%
- Michael Pierce - 12.5%
- Matt Judon - 12.5%

Assistant Coach of the Year: Don ‘Wink’ Martindale
:no_upscale()/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/13695923/usa_today_11992089.jpg)
Martindale’s first year as the defensive coordinator for the proud defensive organization of Baltimore was a resounding success as he finished with the league’s top defense in total yards and passing yards per game as well as the sixth-ranked rushing defense. Martindale’s aggressiveness payed off dividends for the defense, most notably on the final play of the season when Mosley intercepted Baker Mayfield to win the game.

:no_upscale()/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/13695925/usa_today_11817208.jpg)
Crabtree was expected to be the team’s best receiver this season when he was signed after being cut by the Oakland Raiders. Billed as a dangerous red zone threat, Crabtree only caught three touchdown passes to go with his 607 yards on 54 receptions. The worst part for Crabtree in 2018 was finishing the season with the most drops in the entire league.

Biggest surprise: RB Gus Edwards
:no_upscale()/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/13663424/usa_today_11890371.jpg)
Edwards initially didn’t make the 53-man roster at the start of the season despite a strong preseason showing. After injuries to the running back position, however, Edwards was elevated from the practice squad and never looked back as he took the starting role with authority. Edwards rushed for 718 yards and two touchdowns while only receiving significant playing time after the bye week.
