Should the Ravens re-sign Mike Wallace?

NFL: Pittsburgh Steelers at Baltimore Ravens Evan Habeeb-USA TODAY Sports

Free agency struck, and the Baltimore Ravens made their moves, signing both John Brown and Michael Crabtree. Surprisingly, though, free agent Mike Wallace has not been signed, nor is he garnering coverage in news cycles.

First, I’m wondering if this means Wallace is currently in negotiations with the Ravens. Last season, Mike was their best receiver on the field, and I wouldn’t rule out the team attempting to field three, NFL-capable receivers to the gridiron, as opposed to fielding young and undeveloped talent as they’ve done in years past.

But, if they’re not in discussions, which I don’t know, I ask you, the fans, if you’re interested in bringing back Mike Wallace?

At times, Mike was the only capable receiver on the team. Yes, Benjamin Watson produced, but I’m strictly pointing out wide receivers. While the Jeremy Maclin try-out failed, Wallace continued to fight for the ball, suffering hard hits due to his tenacity and strong-spirit. He also created heroic touchdown grabs and moved the chains when desperately necessary.

But is it time to switch over to Crabtree, Brown and a rookie? Let Chris Moore, Quincy Adeboyejo, Tim White and Breshad Perriman fight for the third or fourth spot? Or do you bring back the already known, with Mike Wallace?

He’s no longer the one-trick pony speedster. In fact, he created many plays from just slant routes, as opposed to the straight-line speed up the field.

I do like the idea of Mike returning to Baltimore, but I am also a hopeless romantic in the regard of the Ravens developing a wide receiver. Just once, please, can there be a receiver on the roster without costing the Ravens a full-price/overpriced charge? We watch as rookie wideouts stuff the stat-sheet for themselves and their teams’ win column, all the while earning less than the norm. Odell Beckham Jr., Mike Evans and DeAndre Hopkins all dominated for their respective teams, yet the Ravens are digging through the free agency list every season, in hopes of finding a player capable of catching passes from Joe Flacco.
