The Baltimore Ravens had Dean Pees as their defensive coordinator for six years, and it was as polarizing as you will ever see for a coordinator. After the 2017 season came to a close, Pees officially announced his retirement to the team, two days after a report surfaced of his incoming plans to leave the game of football.
However, reports surfaced last week that the Tennessee Titans were discussing bringing in the former Ravens defensive coordinator to coach their defense with their new head coach Mike Vrabel having a familiarity with Pees dating back to their days in New England. On Monday night, Jason Wolf of the Tennessean reported that the Titans will hire Pees as their new defensive coordinator, replacing Dick LeBeau.
#Titans to hire former #Ravens defensive coordinator Dean Pees for same position, per NFL source. His son, Matt, will join him on staff. @Tennessean (h/t @MarcusMariGOATa via @GMHSRams) https://t.co/KFFvD9WPDL— Jason Wolf (@JasonWolf) January 30, 2018
After six years in Baltimore, Pees will be headed to Tennessee to take over a defense that struggled in the first half of 2017, but picked it up to help lead them to the postseason for the first time since 2008. The Titans were able to come back and beat the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Wild-Card game, before being defeated by the New England Patriots one week later
The Ravens defense last year led the league in turnovers, but suffered late-game collapses once again under Pees. Baltimore's defense blew 18 4th-quarter leads in the six years Pees was the defensive coordinator. Tennessee has a lot of talent on defense, so we will see if things are different for Pees than they were with the Ravens. Baltimore will travel to Tennessee in 2018.
