The Baltimore Ravens defeated the Miami Dolphins 31-7 on Thursday night. The first-team defense bottled up the run and was solid in pass coverage overall. On offense, Ryan Mallett was up-and-down but did spread the ball around and make some plays while avoiding the rush.
Ravens who impressed in Week 2 of the preseason:
- Za’Darius Smith, Outside Linebacker
Smith received the majority of first team reps and provided consistent pressure against Dolphins right tackle. ‘Z’ also did well to set the edge against the run and almost secured a safety.
- Justin Tucker, Kicker
MVP of the Ravens? In a span of four minutes in the second quarter, Tucker hit a 52-yard field goal, recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff, nailed a 27-yard field goal and celebrated with style.
- Brent Urban, Defensive End
While Urban did not make as many splash plays as he did last week against Washington, he was stout against the run. Coordinator Pees had him lined-up next to Michael Pierce as a defensive tackle against passing formations, an intriguing development.
- Maxx Williams, Tight End
Maxx’s two big receptions included a powerful 8-yard catch-and-run to move the chains on third down and elusiveness in the open field on a 40-yard catch-and-run that set up a touchdown. Also displayed improved blocking. Great to see this former second rounder healthy and contributing.
- Javorius Allen, Running Back
‘Buck’ is developing into a dependable player. He followed his blocks and made the most of his 10 rushing attempts, gaining 40 yards. Also displayed sure hands and some wiggle on three receptions.
- Jaylen Hill, Cornerback
Continues to prove he belongs in the NFL. Showed off his makeup speed, agility, change of direction and sound tackling in extensive playing time. Hill’s emergence is softening the blow from the Tavon Young and Maurice Canady injuries.
Honorable Mention: Josh Woodrum, Larry Donnell, Bam Bradley, Matt Skura’s hustle recovering two fumbles
