Steelers place franchise tag on Le’Veon Bell

The Pittsburgh Steelers have retained one of their core players for at least another season, as ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that they have placed the franchise tag on running back Le’Veon Bell.

Bell was fifth in the NFL in rushing in 2016, leading the way for the Steelers with 261 carries for 1,268 yards and seven touchdowns, while also catching 75 passes for 616 yards and two scores. His ability to stay on the field will always be something of a question, he has had injury and suspension issues in the past. But he is unquestionably one of the best running backs on the planet.

This is a move that seemed inevitable if Pittsburgh was unable to sign Bell to a long term contract,. Now that Bell has been tagged, they are likely to put their focus onto re-signing star wideout Antonio Brown to a long term deal.

Steelers fans will most certainly be happy to see Bell back with their team in 2017, but would've likely wanted to see them get a long term deal done with the young ball carrier. However, now that this move has been made, they will just have to be (similar to Bell) patient.
