Elvis Dumervil seeks a return to sack ranking glory

New York Jets v Baltimore Ravens

Elvis Dumervil has big plans for the 2016-2017 season, and they include punishing quarterbacks.

In 2014, Elvis Dumervil consistently took down the opposition. In fact, the linebacker took down the quarterback 17 times by himself. With 17 sacks, and opposite outside linebacker Terrell Suggs, the Baltimore Ravens duo stood on top of sack mountain with a total of 29. Doom wants to reclaim that title this season.

"The last time we played, we were the [NFL’s] No. 1 [sacks] tandem, so that;s something we’ll try to defend once we both get back healthy," Dumervil told reporters at last week’s mandatory minicamp.

This will be no easy feat, with reigning Super Bowl MVP and former Dumervil teammate Von Miller challenging the Ravens with DeMarcus Ware tagging in. Don’t forget another AFC West linebacker, Justin Houston, only a season ago placing a whopping 22.0 sacks in a single season. Both squads will also eagerly seek the sack title.

It doesn’t help Elvis Dumervil and Terrell Suggs both aging. No longer in their primes, respectively they are 32 and 33 years of age. To rub salt in the wound, both are rehabbing surgeries before training camp.

Remember though, it doesn’t only come down to Doom & Sizzle, as Za’Darius Smith & rookie Kamalei Correa are both anxious to stuff the statsheet. With the young ones to give depth, it may not matter if Elvis & Terrell are the #1 sack duo, because in the end, I guarantee you a Lombardi Trophy is much more gratifying for these Ravens than a couple more sacks than others.
