Is Jerraud Powers the next Daryl Smith for the Baltimore Ravens?

With the May 12 compensatory deadline in the rear-view mirror, the Ravens have made some additions to the roster, signing cornerback Jerraud Powers, offensive lineman Vladmir Ducasse, and quarterback Josh Johnson. The big addition of the 3 is Powers, who was given a 1 year, $1.75 million deal, had interest from other teams, and plays a position of need for the Ravens.

The cornerback position is one where the Ravens have many options opposite top corner Jimmy Smith, but no bonafide number 2. Shareece Wright is coming off an impressive second half for the Ravens, and although his pre-Baltimore career was nothing special, Wright will have the first shot at the starting spot opposite his high school teammate. His performance last season earned him a nice multi year deal with the Ravens, one he will have to prove he is worth.

The addition of Powers, who has started 82 games in his 7 year career puts some heat on Wright for the starting job. In fact, NFL insider Ian Rappaport says this is a classic Ozzie move- snagging a potential starter this late in free agency. The last time the Ravens found a player of his caliber late in free agency was inside linebacker Daryl Smith, who was coming off a season where he was injured most of the year. Smith signed a 1 year, $1 million deal with the Ravens, and played at a high level for the Ravens for 3 years before his release this offseason.

Powers is just 28, and even if he does not earn the starting job opposite Smith, he will still factor into the slot corner competition with last year trade acquisition Will Davis, rookie Tavon Young, and veteran Kyle Arrington. The likelihood is that one of these players will not make the roster, although the team could choose to keep 6 cornerbacks unlike previous seasons. Either way, Powers should prove to be a valuable addition for this Ravens secondary.
