March Profile: Ravens Tight End Dennis Pitta

Evan Habeeb-USA TODAY Sports

In the middle of March through the end of the month, we will take a quick look at some of the key players for the Baltimore Ravens entering the 2016 season from where each key player stands in terms of the Ravens depth chart.

Dennis Pitta

Pitta, after dealing with two hip injuries in the 2013 season and the 2014 season, has his career in serious doubt. Pitta loves football and he certainly doesn't want his career to end this way. When healthy, he is Flacco's favorite target. But healthy has been a very rare word to use for Pitta these days.

In Pitta's absence over the last couple of seasons, the Ravens have made creating depth at the tight end position a priority. The Ravens drafted Crockett Gillmore, Maxx Williams, Nick Boyle and even signed 12 year veteran Ben Watson. So even if Pitta is ready to play again, the competition he has in front of him at tight end is very fierce.

The Ravens have all but moved on from Pitta officially. From the outside looking in, it looks like the Ravens are giving Pitta a chance to at least attempt to play one more time. Pitta has a tough decision to make whether to keep playing due to his passion for the game or retire early to assure he remains as healthy as possible for the rest of his life.

If Pitta doesn't retire, he could be a salary cap casualty over the offseason as the Ravens will most likely not want to settle for Pitta's cap number which is 7.2 million.
