Steve Smith Sr. nominated for USAA Salute to Service Award

Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Steve Smith Sr. has been stellar on the field this reason for the Ravens, but now he has a chance to be recognized for his contributions off of it.

Smith has been nominated for the 2016 USAA Salute to Service Award. Smith was nominated as a result of his high support of the military, and his consistent drive to help out whenever possible.

Smith has held a number of football camps for children of military members. All of these camps are free of charge to the families. Smith even traveling as far as Ramstein Air Base in Germany to conduct one of his camps, where near 200 kids attended. In addition, Smith’s foundation, the Steve Smith Family Foundation has paid for military servicemen to participate in various events for charity, such as Smith’s own Lace Up Son 5k in Matthews, North Carolina.

The other nominees in the AFC North are Kyle Caskey of the Cincinnati Bengals, Joe Thomas of the Cleveland Browns, and Alejandro Villanueva of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Villanueva is a former army ranger.

The award will be presented at the NFL Honors award show on February 4th, the night before Super Bowl LI.
