Headlining the injury news, Jimmy Smith returned to practice after being knocked out of Sunday's game with a concussion. He was wearing a non-contact jersey, but his presence on the field signals he has made progress in the concussion protocol.
The other big news was that Joe Flacco missed Wednesday's practice. Other important players absent from practice on Wednesday included Marshal Yanda and Terrell Suggs, both should be considered doubtful for the Jets game on Sunday.
Elvis Dumervil is still out with a nagging foot injury, while defensive starters C.J. Mosley and Shareece Wright were both held out with hamstring problems. Veterans Steve Smith, Devin Hester and Jerraud Powers round out the list of injured Ravens.
In a positive development, both starting offensive tackles Ricky Wagner and Ronnie Stanley were able to practice in full on Wednesday. Running back Lorenzo Taliaferro, who had been on the physically unable to perform list since training camp, also joined his teammates on the field. The Ravens have 21 days until they will be forced to decide on activating Taliaferro to the practice squad.
If Suggs and Dumervil are expected to be out for an extended period of time, the Ravens should consider brining back rookie outside linebacker Victor Ochi to serve as a rotational pass rusher behind Za'Darius Smith and Matt Judon. Ochi, who tallied two sacks for the Ravens in the preseason, is currently on the New York Jets practice squad. The Ravens would not owe the Jets an compensation if Ochi accepted invitation to the Ravens active 53-man roster.
