Ravens Finalize Practice Squad With Three New Signings; Charles James Not Among Them

This year's squad is a formidable one, but the absence of Charles James has many confused.

Today, the Ravens announced the final three additions to their ten-man practice squad. The new acquisitions add a new dimension to the group, and it appears that the Ravens have addressed their need for a kick returner today.

Here is what the Ravens finalized practice squad looks like.

  • Daniel Brown (WR)
  • Dominique Jones (TE)
  • Jeremy Ross (WR)
  • Nick Perry (S)
  • Jeremy Butler (WR)
  • Bryn Renner (QB)
  • Brennen Beyer (OLB)
  • Kaleb Johnson (OL)
  • De'Ondre Wesley (OL)
  • Konrad Reuland (TE)
We saw most of these guys play in the preseason, and all showed promise. While not impressive enough to make the 53-man roster, these players have left a mark on the staff, and earned the honor of being a Baltimore Raven, albeit on the practice squad.

Today's signings were Raven wide receiver Daniel Brown, who cleared waivers after an excellent preseason, tight end Dominique Jones, a league journeyman who has been with seven different teams, and most recently the Denver Broncos, and finally, receiver and return specialist Jeremy Ross, formerly of the Detroit Lions.

Ross is the most intriguing of them all, especially with the Ravens lacking a return specialist. Our own Yitzi Weiss speculated that Ross would be a good match in Baltimore, and he was right. Ross was the Lions' main returner, and averaged 25.4 yards on kickoff returns and 8.9 yards on punt returns last season. It's speculated that the Ravens would like to get a good look at him fielding kicks in practice before making the decision about calling him up to the 53-man roster ahead of Week 1's matchup in Denver.

The most surprising development of the day was the fact that the name of Charles James wasn't mentioned by the team. James had been widely reported as joining the Ravens practice squad yesterday, and tweets from both James himself and Aaron Wilson seemed to confirm the matter. However, there's been no indication from team officials about James joining the squad. The matter has only been made more confusing by this tweet from James. Wilson reported this evening via Twitter that James would still be joining the practice squad, but the squad is now filled. At this point, the only logical situations are the Ravens cutting a player from the practice squad, or James taking Brent Urban's spot on the 53-man roster after Urban's IR/Designated To Return assignment. While RB Terrance Magee was rumored to take Urban's spot yesterday, it seems that James will be a Raven somehow.
