Ravens vs Jaguars Final Score: Offense spreads the ball around without Steve Smith Sr.

Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

With veteran wide receiver Steve Smith going down with a torn Achilles tendon week 8, the question was how the Ravens would bounce back from such a major blow and who would become the next man up. The Ravens sort of figured things out against the Jacksonville Jaguars, as they spread the ball around to pretty much everyone that could catch the ball.

Quarterback Joe Flacco hit 10 different receivers for a total of 316 yards. Early in the game, the man that caught Flacco's eye was Kamar Aiken, as he would end the game with 7 receptions for 73 yards. Without Smith, the Ravens had talked about getting their young tight ends involved, and they did in a major way. The three tight ends would combine for 11 receptions, 117 yards and 2 touchdowns.

The Ravens brought wide receiver Chris Givens to the top of the depth chart. His speed on the outside had doen well for the team this season when he has gotten his chances. Gives would finish with 4 receptions, 37 yards and a touchdown. Outside of these main receiving options, the Ravens still have a host of other young talent that they need to assess moving forward to see what they have for the following seasons. Having brought in wide receiver Jeremy Butler from the practice squad to the 53-man roster, Sunday's game against the Jaguars marked the first game Butler had been active for. While not a breakthrough game for him, he did catch a ball for 21 yards, showing enough talent to get more opportunities in the future.

The hallmark of a Marc Trestman offense has been to get the running backs involved in the passing game as well. Part of what made Chicago Bears' rusher Matt Forte such a threat was not only his ability to run the ball, but to turn that talent upfield after catching the ball. Well Trestman didn't disappoint against the Jaguars as the combination of Justin Forsett, Javorius Allen and Kyle Juszczyk combined for 10 receptions and 62 yards.

None of these elements were enough to carry the Baltimore Ravens offense by themselves, but when combined together, it is a much harder offense to defend against and equaled to one of Flacco's best days in terms of yardage. With the next 7 games, the Ravens should be able to find out if they can survive without Steve Smith backtracking on his retirement claims and if they might be able to grow together as an offense.
