The Baltimore Ravens have had their fair share of injuries this season, especially to a secondary that was majorly injured in 2014 as well. The Ravens had another blow as starting safety Kendrick Lewis went down against the San Francisco 49ers in what looked like a major injury. He was helped off the field and did not return to the action.
However, it looks like the Ravens got some good news there as Lewis was diagnosed with a bone bruise according to head coach John Harbaugh.
[It is] nothing serious with Kendrick [Lewis]. [It is] a bone bruise, and that’s a very good sign. We’ll just see where it goes throughout the course of the week. He was feeling pretty good today, but those things are hard to predict.
As Harbaugh mentioned, the Ravens will have to see how Lewis progresses to determine if he will be ready for the Arizona Cardinals game on Monday night. For those that don't know a bone bruise is technically a micro fracture of the bone and can be incredibly painful and slow to heal. Thankfully, it is also something that a player can play through if the pain isn't too bad.
The issue for the Ravens becomes bigger if Lewis can't suit up against the Cardinals. Lewis' backup is Terrence Brooks who is also on the injury report with a hand injury, and was inactive against the Niners last week. If neither Lewis or Brooks can play, the Ravens will likely move some players around. The third free safety is Anthony Levine Sr., but the Ravens might want to push Brynden Trawick over or even Will Hill and have Trawick fill in at the strong safety spot.
Needless to say that while the injury isn't as bad as it could be, it presents some unique challenges for defensive coordinator Dean Pees this week.
