Preseason power rankings: No. 22 San Diego Chargers

New, comments

The San Diego Chargers started off the Mike McCoy era with an improbable playoff berth. This year they come back to Earth.

Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

2013 Record: 9-7

Notable Losses: Charlie Whitehurst, Cam Thomas, Le'Ron Thomas, Derek Cox

Notable Gains: Kellen Clemens, Donald Brown, Brandon Flowers

Draft Class: Jason Verrett, Jeremiah Attaochu, Chris Watt, Ryan Carrethers, Marion Grice, Tevin Reese

The Facts: The Chargers were a lot like the 2012 Ravens in the sense that they won games they should've won and struggled against lesser opponents. This year they should experience a little regression and miss the playoffs.

The Chargers fixed their offensive line to keep Philip Rivers upright and allow him to come back from the slump he experienced in 2011-2012. Ryan Matthews also had a good year in 2013 rushing for a career high 1,255 yards.

The Chargers added to that talented stable that also includes Danny Woodhead by signing Donald Brown from the Colts. The Chargers had a problem in the area of run defense and that'll be a struggling point if they can't fix it, however they improved their secondary by signing Brandon Flowers from the rival Chiefs. Rivers should continue to play at a high level, but the Chargers will struggle against a higher level of competition.

Predicted Record: 7-9. Wins against the Rams ,Jets, Jaguars, Raiders (x2), Chiefs and Dolphins.
