Saturday, at the John Mackey Awards, general manager Ozzie Newsome was honored with a leadership award based on his success transitioning from a player to a well respected general manager of a highly successful team.

John Mackey Sr., the chairman to the award selection committee had this to say about Newsome:

It’s a difficult task to make that transition from player to front office, and this award was selected based on that.

Newsome was one of three people honored during the ceremony. The University of Washington’s Austin Seferian-Jenkins was recognized as the top tight end in college football, and ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith won the Outstanding Journalism Award.

Newsome and the rest of the Ravens staff are busy preparing for the NFL draft starting May 8th. Expect him to prove why he deserved the award.
