Troy Niklas wasn't expected to declare for the NFL draft.
It was a bit of a surprise to see the underclassman become a professional after his junior season. But the Notre Dame tight end decided it was time to head to the NFL, and he's being considered a second-to-third round prospect by plenty of outlets.
As of now, SB Nation's Mocking the Draft has Niklas going 41st overall to the Buffalo Bills in the recent three-round mock draft (it's since updated its first round mock.)
The tight end position is very top-heavy in this draft class, and Niklas is arguably at the bottom of that top-heavy group. If the Ravens pass on a tight end in the first round, Niklas may be the last option in the second round. His numbers weren't gaudy at Notre Dame, though he would provide a great blocking presence in the running game.
