McDermott will replace Morgan Cox, who tore his ACL during the Ravens' 29-7 win over the Falcons on Sunday. Cox will move to the injured reserve designation and begin the rehab process.
McDermott was the 49ers' long snapper a year ago, appearing in each of San Francisco's 16 games. He was considered a surprise cut after the 49ers waived him following training camp. McDermott played college football at UCLA and went undrafted in 2013.
