When the season opens for the Ravens on Sept. 5, Joe Flacco will be without one of his best friends on the field.
Tight end Dennis Pitta became on of Flacco's go-to options a year ago, acting as a security blanket when receivers were covered downfield. In 2012, Pitta finished with career-bests of 61 receptions, 669 yards and seven touchdowns.
But even though Flacco won't have his top tight end and close friend on the field with him, he's remaining confident that the offense will still be able to churn out yards and score points.
"It's not going to change what we do or anything like that," Flacco said. "Obviously, you're going to miss a guy like that. He's a good target, he's a good player, but we'll adjust. We'll do everything we can to go out there and play the way we always do."
Flacco spoke to Pitta when he was at the hospital recovering from a dislocated and fractured hip suffered during practice. He's also visited Pitta at his home on occasion.
Flacco said it's tough seeing Pitta lost for the season, but added his friend has taken the season-long setback in stride.
"You feel bad about it and you feel sorry for him," Flacco said. "But then, when you go hang out with him and you see how he is doing ... His spirits are the same, and he seems to be great. He's handling it really well, so that helps you get more at ease with it. It's been good. It is what it is; it's a shame and it's one of those freak things, but we'll just have to adjust."
