Ravens' Owner Steve Bisciotti was interviewed at Ravens' Training Camp yesterday, in which one of the topics they talked about was leadership. They asked him about Flacco and Suggs and if they are emerging as leaders for the Ravens.
"Ray Lewis is a once in a generation guy. And when you saw guys like Terrell Suggs, who was a Defensive Player-of-the-Year, and in the offseason and as the season started last year, he's still deferring to Ray Lewis. And it's interesting. When you have somebody of that iconic level, it was hard to step out of his shadow and they really didn't try to. They knew that they were seeing something and they were fortunate to be a part of it, but I think that this is a great opportunity for guys like Suggs to step up and Joe to step up. It's coming along exactly the way I figured; I thought that we were going to surprise people with our level of leadership on this team. And then you get a guy like Elvis Dumervil in here. We're not going to miss a beat from a leadership standpoint. Direction, these guys are going to know what direction to go in."
The Ravens lost many leaders in the offseason after winning the Super Bowl. Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Anquan Boldin, and Bernard Pollard are all leaders of the Super Bowl XLVII team that are gone. The biggest question mark has been who will lead the team this coming year. According to Steve Bisciotti, it will be Terrell Suggs, Joe Flacco, and Elvis Dumervil.
It will be interesting to see if Torrey Smith can also emerge as the leader for the receiving corps, as he is now the full-time number one receiver.
If Bisciotti says it, it must be true. The Ravens WILL be okay when it comes to leadership.
