Tight end Dennis Pitta has been ruled out for the 2013 season.

After Sunday's practice, coach John Harbaugh told reporters that Pitta's injury was too severe to return from this season. Pitta dislocated and fractured his hip during a jump ball in the end zone and had to be carted off the field.

Harbaugh said he expects Pitta back for the 2014 season.

To fill Pitta's absence, the Ravens signed veteran tight end Visanthe Shiancoe to a one-year deal. Shiancoe, 33, has totaled 2,677 yards and 27 touchdowns during his career.

Shiancoe will be competing for a backup role as Ed Dickson is the presumed starter at tight end.

Earlier on Sunday, Pitta released a statement on Facebook asking for prayers from the fan base. At the time of the post, Pitta was still unsure whether he was ruled out for the season or not.

"Asking for prayers for a speedy recovery and heal time as I go through this ordeal," Pitta wrote. "Ravens will always be Ravens and if it turns out that I am out for the season I have confidence for other teammates to step up and do their part. Keep the faith!"
