Terrell Suggs likes to run his mouth when given the chance.
In a goal line drill, Suggs burst through the line off the snap and blew past rookie fullback Kyle Juszczyk. Almost a second after the ball was snapped, Suggs was tackling second-year running back Bernard Pierce for a three-yard loss.
Joyfully, Suggs jogged to the sideline and turned to his offensive counterparts.
"Where the f--- is Vonta Leach when you need him?" Suggs shouted.
Suggs' words are indicative of where Juszczyk is right now, though the Ravens just finished the third full day of training camp. He still needs time and work to be the kind of lead blocker needed against elite defenders. With Leach still weighing his options, it makes you wonder if the Ravens are going to sweeten the deal to ensure he does in fact re-sign.
With Anquan Boldin in San Francisco and Dennis Pitta (dislocated hip) out for at least the first game of the season, the Ravens are going to need to rely heavier on the running game it would seem.
As for the defense, it's looked outstanding early, but that's generally the case in training camps across the league. Suggs, however, has stood out as looking quicker off the snap than a season ago, when he came back from a torn Achilles tendon.
It's too early to say whether he's back to his 2011 form, when he recorded 14 sacks and won the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year award. But he certainly looks improved thus far.
