Dennis Pitta Dislocates Hip, Out Week 1

John Harbaugh announced that tight end Dennis Pitta dislocated his hip and will miss at least the season-opener against Denver.

Pitta was carted off the field during practice Saturday after attempting to come down with a jump ball in the end zone over safety James Ihedigbo. The two collided and fell to the turf. Pitta needed assistance standing up and was carted off of the field.

Harbaugh didn't have a media obligation on Saturday but came to the podium with the announcement.

"Dennis has a a dislocated hip, so we'll have to take a look at it and see exactly what it is," Harbaugh said. "The situation is a serious injury and he's going to be out for a while. He will not be in the Denver game. We'll just have to play through it and see how long it goes. We don't really have the numbers or the weeks right now and we'll just have to see."

This is a huge blow to Baltimore's offense. Though Harbaugh said Pitta will miss the season-opener, it can be expected that he'll miss more time than that, though that's depending on the type of dislocation.

According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, hip dislocations can take two to three months to heal, but can be longer if there are any fractures involved. Nerve damage can also be associated with hip dislocations.
