ESPN reported earlier today that Joe Flacco's agent, Joe Linta, feels not remorse over the fact that the Baltimore Ravens ended up signing Joe Flacco to a highly unfriendly deal in terms of cap-space. In fact, his exact words were:
"I've never in my life seen a dumber move. I guess people can say, 'Well, Joe was dumb, too.' It could have been [dumb], God forbid, if he got hurt. But $1 million to [Ravens owner] Steve Bisciotti six years from now? That's like 100 bucks for you or me today. I'm not apologetic for the fact this is really a three-year deal, there's no way they can afford $29 million a couple of years from now, I'm not apologetic. They chose to walk away." (Via USA Today)
Two things alarm me about this quote: Joe Linta is the perfect mix between an aggressive, business-savvy agent and a jerk, and the Baltimore Ravens may have an extremely big problem on their hands three years down the road if they cannot find a way to restructure Joe Flacco's deal. While that seems like a far-away problem right now, the truth is the Baltimore Ravens have dug themselves into a hole in terms of cap-space and if they do not find a way to fix it they will be hurting badly in a few years.
