March 06, 2013 – Duke Men’s Basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski will be joined tonight by John Harbaugh, head coach of the Super Bowl Champion Baltimore Ravens, for a one-on-one interview on Krzyzewski’s weekly SiriusXM show, Basketball and Beyond with Coach K.
In tonight’s interview, Harbaugh reflects on winning the Super Bowl, and talks about signing quarterback Joe Flacco and the departure of Ravens emotional leader Ray Lewis, among other topics.
The show airs tonight (7:00 pm ET) on Mad Dog Radio SiriusXM channel 86) and tomorrow, March 7 (6:00 pm ET) on SiriusXM College Sports Nation (channel 91).
Highlights from tonight’s show:
On Joe Flacco's new contract:
Coach K: "This has been an unbelievable week for you guys with signing Flacco. What does that mean now? Why now? What’s the impact of him signing for your organization and the effect that it has?"
John Harbaugh: "It’s been probably a year in the making. It’s something that we tried to do last year and just didn’t quite get it worked out. And credit to Joe. I think Joe is more about proving something. It wasn’t about money for him, it wasn’t about security. He wanted to prove himself as one of the top quarterbacks in football and he kind of put it on his own shoulders this year and did that, obviously, in a big way. Team effort and he’d be the first to say that. But it’s good for our team. In this league you have to have that guy, really, to sustain success. You have to build a team around him but Joe’s the right kind of guy. He’s a great leader, he’s a hard worker, tremendous competitor and he won’t be the kind of guy who gets affected by a contract like that."
On departure of emotional leader Ray Lewis:
Harbaugh: "Ray is an unbelievable leader. But he’s less of an out front leader probably and more of a one-on-one relationship builder than people imagine. He’s got everybody that I know of in the NFL, probably every young guy, in his cell phone. He’s always talking to our guys one-on-one. He does lead by example because he’s taking notes in every meeting, he’s watching tape 24/7 – every time I see him he’s got his iPad and he’s got tape going. And guys see that. So to me, he’s more of a leader by example and more of a relational type leader than he even is an out front leader."
Harbaugh: "We think we have 53 leaders and that void will be filled by everybody. It’s not like a one-man job. Everybody’s got a role as a leader and a follower. You know, you can’t be a great leader unless you’re a great follower also."
Basketball and Beyond with Coach K airs weekly throughout the college basketball season, and multiple times during the off-season on SiriusXM. The show features discussions on a wide array of topical issues, covering the state of college sports and showcasing Krzyzewski's personal perspective on principles for life on and off the court, plus interviews with a variety of special guests, including business leaders, entertainers, coaches and athletes.
