Ravens Update: Bobby Rainey

Undrafted Baltimore Ravens rookie running back is quickly becoming a sort of a cult hero amongst fans around town, much less his former college, Western Kentucky University. Rainey was signed after the 2012 NFL Draft, even though the team already had All-Pro Ray Rice, third-round draft pick Bernard Pierce and second-year running backs Anthony Allen and Damien Berry.

All Rainey did at college was have back-to-back 1,500 rushing yard seasons and end his career sixth in NCAA history for total all-purpose yards. How he went undrafted is still a mystery to both Rainey and the Ravens, but despite the depth on this roster, Rainey chose to come to Baltimore.

Even though he impressed coaches, players and media at Training Camp, he really became better known amassing 143 all-purpose yards in his first preseason game last week against the Atlanta Falcons. Last night, while he didn't have the same total yardage against the Detroit Lions in the Ravens 27-12 loss, he still had another solid all-purpose game, touching the ball ten times and gaining 52 yards.

Three rushing attempts (3 yards), four receptions (20 yards), two kickoff returns (21 yards) and one punt return (8 yards) once again proved his versatility and continues to force the coaches to consider his abilities to help this team in a wide range of options.

Listed on the team's roster at the exact same height and weight as the guy he is trying to earn the backup job behind, Rainey watches and learns from Ray Rice and provides the possibility of not having to change the team's game-plan one bit if he replaces Rice for any reason during a game. Once considered an afterthought, Rainey is now definitely in the mix and many consider him the third option behind Rice and fellow rookie Bernard Pierce.
