Early reports out Baltimore this morning indicated Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs had torn his Achilles this past week while playing in a basketball game. Subsequent reports indicate the injury occurred during a conditioning test. Ravens Insider Aaron Wilson received tweets from Suggs stating as such and that a doctor told him it was a partial tear. Suggs appears strongly intent on returning during the upcoming season.
A full tear of the Achilles generally requires 9-12 months of recovery. A partial tear means he could be back earlier than that. If that is the case, it changes the potential roster moves the Ravens might make in Suggs' absence. Since the injury has taken place before training camp starts in July, the Ravens will be allowed to place Suggs on the physically unable to perform ("PUP") list. A player can remain on the PUP list through the first six games of the season. That would take the Ravens through their October 14 contest with the Dallas Cowboys.
Although it might be several weeks after that for Suggs to play, the Ravens could still activate him off the PUP list and include him among their inactive players until he is ready to return.
