Can Ravens' Injury Riddled Secondary Match Up With Chargers Receivers

With three starters currently sidelined for various reasons, will the Baltimore Ravens' secondary be able to match up against Philip Rivers and the Chargers passing attack?

Jason Bridge-US PRESSWIRE

The Baltimore Ravens do not have a great history when going to San Diego to face the Chargers. Last season they were torn apart by Philip Rivers and his gigantic receivers. The time before that they made just enough plays to get the win. It took a game-sealing play by Ray Lewis on running back Darren Sproles in order to stop the Chargers from creating a game winning drive.

This season the Chargers started off poorly with the receiving core having been revamped in the off season. The loss of their number one target Vincent Jackson and number three target Legedu Naanee caused them to sputter on offense.

Now, they seem to have an emerging star in oft-injured St. Louis cast off Danario Alexander. His size and speed are exactly what drives Ravens defensive backs crazy. His performance since joining the team has helped the offense regain some of it's prior form.

San Diego's bevy of large, physical receivers could cause havoc for the Ravens secondary, especially because they will be without three of their starting five. Ed Reed, Lardarius Webb and Jimmy Smith will all miss the game for various reasons. It will be up to new comer Chris Johnson, off-season acquisition and nickle-back Corey Graham and starters Cary Williams and Bernard Pollard to man these massive receivers. This could be the main cause to the outcome of Sundays' game. A game in which the Ravens sorely need a win.
