POST PUBLISH NOTE: Smith played for little-known Elizabeth City State in North Carolina and grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He played QB in high school, leading his team to the state championship game. He spent two years at Grand Rapids Community College, earning awards as a kick returner.
