The Baltimore Ravens made a dent inside the Cleveland Browns' Red Zone twice yesterday in their 20-10 playoff-clinching victory. Once it resulted in a touchdown and the other time a field goal. They scored their other TD and field goal on plays from outside of the Red Zone. Two scores in two attempts but only one touchdown counts as a 50% success rate in the Red Zone according to the NFL. Not great, but as the Ravens have proved all year, good enough.

The Baltimore Ravens racked up close to 400 yards of total offense in Sunday's 30-24 victory over the New Orleans Saints. Within the offensive explosion was five trips into the Red Zone, and while they scored all five times, three of the scores were field goals that ended up being the difference in the game. However, had the Ravens scored even one touchdwn instead of those FG's when inside the Saints' 20 yard line, the nail-biting at the end might have been avoided. Then again, that's not been the Ravens way all season has it?
Officially, the Ravens scored at a 40% clip in the Red Zone, but scoring anything adds up on the scoreboard as the Ravens and the Saints found out Sunday afternoon.

The Baltimore Ravens might have been far from perfect on the field, especially in the second half of their Monday Nght Football 34-28 overtime victory over the Houston Texans, but they were perfect once they got into their opponent's Red Zone. three times the Ravens drove inside of Houston's 20 yard line, all in the first half, and all three times they got the ball into the end zone for the touchdown. Thanks to a one yard run by RB Willis McGahee and two Joe Flacco-to-Derrick Mason TD passes, the Ravens jumped into a seemingly insurmountable 21-0 lead, but still needed a game-ending pick-six by Ravens CB Josh Willson (U. of MD) to finally win the game.
Keeping up this type of success in the Red Zone will go a long way adding to the Ravens win total as the season winds down and the playoffs appear on the horizon.

The Baltimore Ravens floundered on offense most of the night in their 13-10 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday Night Football. They went three-and-out on half of their possessions and other than two long pass plays, never really threatened to put enough points on the board to extend the lead that they ended up surrendering at the end of the game for one of the most heartbreaking defeats in recent memory.
They did, however, score both times they entered the Red Zone, once on a sweet 14 yard TD pass from Joe Flacco to Anquan Boldin and the other on a 24 yard field goal by placekicker Billy Cundiff. However, had they been able to turn that three-pointer into seven, the outcome might have not been in doubt at the end. Only one other time did they get close and that was on the Flacco to Donte Stallworth bomb that set them up in decent field position at the Steelers 27 yard line. However, a penalty and a ill-timed sack later and the Ravens were forced to punt.
Four times the Ravens have lost this season and all four times they had the lead in the fourth quarter. In the future, the Ravens know that more trips into the Red Zone, the more chance they have at winning these close contests.

Officially, the Baltimore Ravens made it into the Red Zone twice in yesterday's 17-10 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. However, the scoring chart only shows the 15 yard TD pass from Joe Flacco to Derrick Mason as being inside the opponent's 20 yard line. That's because the other time the Ravens were in the Red Zone, they settled for a 27 yard Billy Cundiff field goal. That field goal was from the ball being hiked from the ten yard line, set on the 17 yard line by holder Sam Koch, which made it a 27 yard attempt.
Two scores on two visits inside the Red Zone, although only one TD. Fortunately the Ravens scored another TD from way outside of the Red Zone on the Flacco to Todd Heap 65 yard TD pass and run. I think we'll gladly take that, despite the low Red Zone stats!

In the Baltimore Ravens 37-13 victory over the Carolina Panthers yesterday, the Ravens reached the Red Zone four times and came away with three scores. They scored touchdowns on two of their first three Red Zone possessions and a field goal on their final trip inside the Panthers 20 yard line. The only miscue was a fumble on Carolina's eleven yard line when it seemed that QB Joe Flacco and RB Ray Rice did not manage the exchange on the hand-off and the Panthers recovered the ball. That's 17 points inside the Red Zone for the Ravens, which alone would have been good enough to win the game, but it was a lot nicer to see the defense put the game away late in the fourth quarter.
The Ravens scored the rest of their points from outside the Red Zone on a Billy Cundiff 48 yard FG and two pick-sixes by Dawan Landry (assist to Ed Reed on the INT) and Ray Lewis.

The Baltimore Ravens might not have been perfect in their 26-21 loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Thursday Night Football, but they were perfect inside the Red Zone. Three trips inside the Falcons' 20 yard line all resulted in touchdowns off the rocket arm of QB Joe Flacco. Flacco three three touchdown passes in the second half, from five, six and nine yards, the final one coming with just over a minute to go in the game. However, that obviously was too much time to leave on the clock as Atanta's QB Matt Ryan drive his team downfield for the game-winning TD pass of his own to WR Roddy White, who benefited from a non-call on what looked to be an obvious offensive pass interference push-off, or more like a shove-down.
However, it was still nice to see the Ravens put the ball in the end zone from the Red Zone when they ad the chance and hopefully that percentage will continue next week at the Carolina Panthers.

The Baltimore Ravens might have dominated the Miami Dolphins, especially in the second half of yesterday's 26-10 win, but in order to go deep into the post season, they're going to have to be more successful scoring touchdowns in the Red Zone as opposed to just settling for Billy Cundiff field goals.
The Ravens crossed the Dolphins 20 yard line a total of seven times, and that does not include their first 32 yard scoring pass. Only once did they end up with six points, on a Joe Flacco to Derrick Mason TD pass. Four times they settled for field goals, once they missed the attempt and the other time they just plain muffed the FG snap and set.
Five scores out of seven trips inside the Red Zone might sound good, but the Ravens will need to up their TD count instead of ending up with three points way too many times. However, if they can get inside the Red Zone seven times in a game, that usually means they are moving the ball well and winning the time of possession battle, which usually results in a victory as it did yesterday.
