A live-updating post on all the Baltimore Ravens’ 2024 offseason moves: trades, signings, cuts and re-signings

The offseason is underway for the Baltimore Ravens. After reaching the AFC Championship game, the Ravens have their work cut out for them in building their 2024 roster and maintain their status as championship contenders.

The Ravens don’t have a hefty amount of salary cap to work with, but expectations are the Ravens will make moves in order to not only get under the limit, but to have money to spend when the free agency officially opens on March 13 at 4 p.m., when the 2024 League Year begins.

Last season, Baltimore Beatdown was a source for information in our 2023 Ravens offseason tracker, where you can find all the moves made, good and bad. The same for 2022.

The Ravens have begun to make decisions, and many more will come over the following days in the lead up to the new league year.

The Ravens starting right guard 2021 is heading to the NFC North

According to reports, former Baltimore Ravens offensive lineman Kevin Zeitler is headed to the NFC North on a one-year contract, joining the Detroit Lions.

Former Ravens Pro-Bowl guard Kevin Zeitler intends to sign a one-year deal with the Detroit Lions, per source. Zeitler is flying to Detroit tonight to take a physical with the plan to sign Tuesday with the Lions. pic.twitter.com/7GdExwQhGv
— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) March 18, 2024

Zeitler, 34, now enters Year 13 of his well-established career as an offensive guard. In such time, he’s been among the better guards in the NFL, and in 2021 the Ravens managed to land him after the New York Giants just... let him go?

Immediately, Zeitler delivered for Baltimore, allowing only one sack and 16 hurries in 17 games. He followed up the next two seasons with similar numbers and in all, was a boon for Baltimore’s protection unit.

But after three seasons, it appears as both sides may have want something new—or different. The Ravens need to get cheaper and younger along the offensive line. They did as much parting ways with John Simpson, Morgan Moses and Zeitler. They now look to their current crop of blockers to fill the gaps in Andrew Vorhees, Ben Cleveland, Malaesala Aumavae-Laulu and Daniel Faalele.

Meanwhile, Zeitler likely wanted to land another solid contract as he enters the back-stretch of his career. But he isn’t just getting a payday from the Lions, as they are now contenders in the NFC after nearly reaching the Super Bowl last season.

Zeitler’s was a fan-favorite in Baltimore. Deservedly so, as he was a hard-working, tough player who fought to be on the field and stay there. And after 12 years, Ravens fans and a little luck pushed him across the finish line on earning his first Pro Bowl in 2023.

The Ravens have comp picks to protect and positions of need to supplement

The Baltimore Ravens have historically been one of the least active teams in the initial wave of free agency. They rarely shell out large sums of money to acquire other teams’ unrestricted free agents in favor of allocating more resources to keeping their own.

However, they’ve been more active and willing to spend on veteran free agents who were released by their former teams. This allows them to supplement or fill positions of need ahead of the draft while not compromising the compensatory pick formula.

The Ravens are currently slated to receive the maximum amount of comp picks in 2025. Nine of their unrestricted free agents sign elsewhere in the past week and there will be even more to come. At the same time, they still have positions that could benefit from having a veteran presence to complement their younger options.

Adding one or more ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft would ensure that General Manager Eric DeCosta could stick to the front office’s longtime ‘best player available’ draft strategy. The alternative is being pressured to take a prospect at a position that had yet to be addressed through other means.

Here are some veteran salary cap casualties that the Ravens could sign at positions of need. This would supplement their roster and give them more flexibility come late April.

The six-year veteran was released by the Dallas Cowboys on March 15 with a Post-June 1 designation. Gallup is coming off three straight seasons that were marred by injuries and inconsistent production after recording 1,950 receiving yards and scoring 11 touchdowns from 2019-2020.

While he played in every game this past season, Gallup only managed to record 34 receptions on 57 targets for career-low 418 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Nevertheless, he is a strong possession receiver who knows how the work the boundary, excels at making contested catches, and can be a threat in the red zone. Even though he’s still just 28 years old, his market likely won’t be robust given his lack of recent production and how deep this year’s incoming draft class is at the position.

The 10-year veteran was released by the Pittsburgh Steelers on March 8. If signed by the Ravens, it would continue the trend of free-agent players going from one AFC North team to another this past week.

The former Pro Bowler is coming off the least productive season of his career albeit in one of the worst offenses in the league. He appeared in all 17 games and recorded the second-fewest catches of his career with 34 and career lows in both receiving yards (280) and yards per catch (8.2) and no touchdowns. At 6-foot-2 and 220 pounds, Robinson would provide the Ravens with a big-bodied receiving option that it’s currently lacking. The 30-year-old won’t command a prohibitive salary and is likely willing to sign a one-year, prove-it type deal with a contender that is heavily incentive-based.

The six-year veteran was released by the Carolina Panthers on March 14 just one year after being re-signed to a three-year, $18 million deal last offseason. Bozeman was originally drafted by the Ravens in the sixth round of the 2018 NFL Draft out of Alabama. He developed into a quality starter at both left guard and center during his four years with the team. He started 48 of a possible 49 games between the two positions from 2019-2021.

The bulk of his starting experience with the Ravens came at left guard, where they’re in need of a new starter after letting John Simpson walk in free agency.

Bozeman is a former Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee who is familiar with the team’s culture already. He would provide leadership to a young interior offensive line that will only be getting younger through the draft. Even if he doesn’t win the starting job to replace either Simpson or Kevin Zeitler at right guard, the 29-year-old would be an experienced depth option. He’s capable of filling in at all three interior spots and freeing up Patrick Mekari to remain the primary swing tackle option.

The nine-year veteran was released by the New York Jets on March 1 and has played his entire career at left guard. He’s been one of the most durable linemen in the league during his nearly decade in the league. Tomlinson has started 102 of his 111 career regular-season appearances, including all 17 in 2023, and hasn’t missed a game since 2018.

Last season, according to Pro Football Focus, the former Pro Bowler earned an overall grade of 55, a passing-blocking grade of 60.6, and a run-blocking grade of 49.6. He allowed seven sacks and 10 quarterback hits on 733 pass-blocking snaps with 51 total pressures allowed.

At 32 years old and off a down season, where the upcoming draft is loaded with offensive line talent, he might be willing to take a lesser deal to ensure he finds a landing spot sooner.

If the Ravens are unable to re-sign veteran Arthur Maulet ahead of the draft, pivoting to Maddox as a low-risk, high-reward option could yield similar impressive results if he stays healthy.

Luke Jones, Baltimore Positive

Eric DeCosta called Derrick Henry “a unicorn,” and Baltimore certainly needed an impact running back. At the same time, this ground attack has been elite in the aggregate for years with only modest investments, allowing the Ravens to devote resources elsewhere. The bar is high, especially considering other roster needs.

You wonder if Henry’s addition signals a return to more of a run-heavy offense on early downs. Lost in the AFC title game rage was Baltimore ranking seventh in game-neutral early-down passing rate last season. The ground game typically didn’t take over until building sizable leads, which were common.

Regardless of Henry’s arrival, the Ravens have to protect their two-time MVP quarterback and now need to fill three openings on the offensive line. Yes, it’s a strong draft class, but filling multiple spots with rookies and unproven players almost always sounds better in March than it looks come September.

Of Baltimore’s free agents still on the market, re-signing Jadeveon Clowney easily tops my preferences. I wouldn’t be overly comfortable penciling in David Ojabo and Tavius Robinson as my No. 3 and 4 edge rushers, let alone projecting either to start opposite Odafe Oweh. There’s serious work to do there.

The Ravens made a couple of surprise moves this offseason by deciding not to re-sign Pro Bowl guard Kevin Zeitler and trading right tackle Morgan Moses to the New York Jets.

It left a huge void on the offensive line and added more challenges for general manager Eric DeCosta this offseason.

The Ravens were not confident that Zeitler, 34, and Moses, 34, could withstand another complete NFL season after battling injuries last year.

DeCosta plans to replace those players and boost the offensive line “with good, young, cheap, talented football players.”

The Ravens need to replace both starting guards and find a new starting right tackle.

Ben Cleveland will have the opportunity to take Zeitler’s spot on the right side of the line, but he will need to perform better and show up to training camp in shape.

Andrew Vorhees, who missed last season as a rookie with a knee injury, is a wild card to take a starting job at guard after being rated the highest-rated offensive lineman in the Pac-12 each of his final two years at USC.

The Ravens are likely to take two or even three offensive linemen with their nine selections in this year’s draft. Some of the players who could fall to the Ravens with the 30th overall pick include Blake Fisher (Notre Dame), Graham Barton (Duke), Kiran Amegadjie (Yale), and Jordan Morgan (Arizona).

Age isn’t just a number, but it’s also not something to be scared of. The tape, the player, the fit all matter more than a birth certificate. The Ravens operate that way and have been richly rewarded by high production from 30+-year-old players over the years. Henry is next.

Baltimore has (so far) lost a whopping eight free agents to other teams, which is higher-than-usual turnover. The reason is because their 2020 draft class was so strong and because so many veterans they signed to one-year deals last offseason performed so well. Eric DeCosta should take a bow.

Right now, Russell Street Report’s Brian McFarland estimates the Ravens have essentially $4.7 million in usable salary-cap space to spend, but with room to create more with restructures. I expect they’ll spend a chunk on a pass rusher (maybe Jadeveon Clowney), but otherwise a series of smaller short-term veteran deals.

The details from Ronnie Stanley’s reported contract restructure have come to light, and they clearly spell out a prove-it-year for the veteran left tackle. The Ravens reportedly saved more than $9 million on this year’s cap and Stanley is set to become a free agent next offseason. He’s highly motivated.

Jonas Shaffer, The Baltimore Banner

The 6-foot-3, 247-pound Henry is almost defiantly durable. He had a reported 1,397 carries as a record-breaking high school star, 602 carries in a Heisman Trophy-winning college career at Alabama and 2,030 carries over eight standout regular seasons with the Tennessee Titans. And yet he has missed fewer NFL games (12) while playing the sport’s most vulnerable position than quarterback Lamar Jackson has at the sport’s most protected position (13).

Henry, meanwhile, has aged as if he were immune to wear and tear. His highest speed as a ball carrier last season (21.68 mph) was the third highest of his career, according to the NFL’s Next Gen Stats. He broke tackles at a higher rate last year than he did in 2019, when he rushed for 1,540 yards, according to Pro Football Focus.

And, during the season itself, Henry almost becomes football’s Benjamin Button. Over his career, he’s averaged 3.7 yards per carry in September, 4.6 yards in October, 4.9 yards in November and 5.2 yards in December and January. Even over the past two years, after returning from the foot injury that ended his 2021 season, his rushing average from Week 13 to Week 18 (4.5 yards per carry) is higher than it is from Week 1 to Week 12 (4.2), according to TruMedia.

His vision and instincts in reacting to routes are among the best of this class, and he also has very good ball skills (three picks and 17 pass breakups over the past two seasons). And his 4.28-second 40-yard dash time paced all of the defensive backs at the combine.

Coleman made an instant impact with FSU after transferring from Michigan State before last season. His big frame helps him play through contact, and he’s also a strong route runner and dominant at the catch point. He has consistent ball-tracking skills (11 touchdown catches in 2023); he seems to see the ball in slow motion. But creating consistent separation outside of the red zone and in the underneath areas has room for improvement. His 4.61-second run in the 40 at the combine wasn’t ideal, though he plays faster than his timed speed would indicate.

The recently released wideout announced what appeared to be an appreciation and goodbye message to the city and fan base that embraced him.

Days after being officially released with a Post-June 1 designation, veteran free agent wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. posted what appears to be a goodbye to Charm City and fans of Baltimore Ravens fans everywhere via Instagram on Sunday, thanking them for embracing and welcoming him with open arms in his lone season with the team.

The three-time Pro Bowler signed a one-year deal worth $15 million on Easter Sunday last April which proved to be instrumental in inking franchise quarterback Lamar Jackson to a long-term extension later that month on the first day of the 2023 NFL Draft.

Beckham Jr. had a solid first year back after he spent the entire 2022 season recovering from a torn ACL he suffered helping the Los Angeles Rams win Super Bowl 56. He appeared in 14 games in which he made six starts and finished top three on the team with 35 receptions (third) on 64 targets (second) for 565 receiving yards (second) and three touchdowns (fourth).

In addition to expressing a tremendous amount of appreciation, one part of his message that stood out was when he said he “did everything I could (with) the opportunities I had.” Beckham Jr. began to see his target share dip down the final stretch of the regular season and the playoffs with an average of just 2.8 targets in his final five appearances.

While Ravens General Manager Eric DeCosta left the door open for him to be potentially brought back at some point with comments he made at the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine about them being in contact, this latest development suggests that a reunion is probably unlikely. Nevertheless, the excitement that his addition brought to the city and fan base electrifying and much-needed at the time while his leadership and influence on both the team as a whole and especially 2023 first-round wideout Zay Flowers was invaluable.

The Cleveland Browns sign Ravens backup quarterback Tyler Huntley to a one-year deal

According to multiple reports, the Cleveland Browns have agreed to terms with former Baltimore Ravens backup quarterback Tyler Huntley.

With Huntley signing with the Browns, Cleveland now has Deshaun Watson, Jameis Winston, Dorian Thompson-Robinson and Huntley on their depth chart. As for the Ravens, they have Lamar Jackson, Josh Johnson and Malik Cunningham.

Huntley, 26, joined the Ravens as an undrafted free agent out of Utah in 2020. In his four seasons with the Ravens, Huntley had extreme flashes of brilliance and painful miscues. Against the Green Bay Packers in 2021, Huntley went blow-for-blow against Aaron Rodgers, throwing 28-for-40 for 215 yards and two touchdowns, and scoring another two touchdowns in the ground as he rushed for 73 yards on 13 carries. But the Ravens suffered a last-minute loss as the Ravens went for two after Huntley’s rushing touchdown with 42 seconds left, and the pass failed.

Huntley’s career as a Raven will likely not be remembered by the excitement he brought for stretches, but sadly his quarterback sneak against the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2023 Wild Card matchup. On 3rd and one from the one-yard line, the Ravens called a quarterback sneak. Instead of following the pile low, Huntley leapt over the top, the ball was punched out and returned by defensive end Sam Hubbard for a 98-yard touchdown, which was the game-winning play for the Bengals.

The Ravens have been in reported searches for a backup quarterback since the 2021 offseason, reportedly considering Baker Mayfield and other veterans throughout the past two years. Now, they have Johnson and it’s assumed they’ll consider looking elsewhere for the right price.

The four-time Pro Bowler knew Baltimore was where he wanted to be when he hit free agency.

It is not often that the player and team pairing that everyone from the national media and fan base clamor for actually comes to fruition. However, that is exactly what happened when the Baltimore Ravens officially signed free agent veteran running back Derrick Henry to a two-deal worth up to $20 million this past Thursday.

The two parties joining forces made too much sense not to happen and Henry couldn’t agree more so when the opportunity to sign with the Charm City franchise finally became a real possibility, the decision was an easy one to make.

“It was really a no brainer.” @KingHenry_2 on his decision to come to Baltimore: pic.twitter.com/PDWtkI6CkM
— Baltimore Ravens (@Ravens) March 14, 2024

“It was really a no-brainer for me,” Henry said at his introductory press conference Thursday. “This is where I knew I wanted to be. I love the style, the physicality that they play with on all three phases. I feel like it fits my style of play as well and it was really a no-brainer trying to figure out the business side of things and I’m glad we were able to get it figured out.”

While Henry has been on several playoff teams during his time with the Titans and has racked up 732 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 156 carries in seven playoff appearances, he hasn’t been a part of a perennial Super Bowl contender. After having to watch the postseason from his couch in each of the past two seasons, joining a team that gives him a legitimate chance to make a deep run for a title was important to him as he prepared to embark on free agency for the first time in his career.

“I definitely wanted to be somewhere that had a solid foundation, and this foundation has been set for a very long time. They compete every year and always in the conversation,” Henry said. “I want to be somewhere I’m surrounded by talent, have a great quarterback and great players around as well, so I’m just excited for this opportunity and blessed and thankful to be able to land here.”

In Baltimore, Henry will share a backfield with the best quarterback he has ever played with, two-time league MVP Lamar Jackson. The two of them are among the most accomplished and decorated players at their respective positions since 2019 when they both made their first career Pro Bowls. They will form arguably the most lethal tandem in the league this fall who will gash, slash, and plow through opposing defenses. The 2020 Offensive Player of the Year can’t wait to get to work on establishing their chemistry with Jackson and ingratiate himself with all his new teammates.

“He’s so dynamic in how he plays, and his playmaking ability, especially me seeing it going against these guys for a little while now,” Henry said. “[I’m] excited to play with him. He had a great year this year, [and he] did a lot of great things. We have a lot of great guys in the offense, and I just want to be an added piece to this offense to help them do better than they did last year.”

Even though the 30-year-old has over 2000 carries and over 10,000 career rushing yards between the regular and postseason combined, he has shown no signs of attrition or slowing down. Henry has a clear message for the skeptics who doubt how much he has left in the tank and can contribute to the Ravens’ offense, “Tell them to keep watching.”

“People are always going to have something to say,” Henry said. “They’re always going to have opinions. I’m just here ready to work, ready to get things started, [and] do my best to help this organization.”
