First of all, I'm very excited to watch our offense this year as well. With Kubiak running it, it should be much improved. I'll probably right about how I'm excited about the offense later. But let's get to the defense. We now have so much young talent. I'll talk about each part of our defense.
While we lost Arthur Jones, I think we'll be fine. We drafted both Timmy Jernigan (who might be able to take Jones's spot immediately) and Brent Urban (who will likely be Canty's replacement). We also have a healthy Brandon Williams. I'm hoping Williams can become a major contributor this year. We also have Kapron Lewis-Moore, now healthy and ready to contribute. Lewis-Moore could be well worth the 6th round pick we spent on him. Cody is okay depth. Pernell McPhee could possibly be a pass-rusher on a passing downs. We also have DeAngelo Tyson. Another good rotational player. And hopefully the reports that Haloti Ngata is finally completely healthy are true and that he can return to his old dominant self. It seems we could possibly have a problem. The problem could end up being that we have too many possible people deserving players to play too few spots. But we have so many possible contributors and it should exciting to watch.
There seems to be nowhere this LB core can go but up. Suggs hopefully won't burn out like he did near the end of last year. Dumervil has bulked up to hopefully be able to play more during run downs. We have very good depth behind them with Courtney Upshaw and John Simon, both of whom should get some snaps this year. Pernell McPhee might get some snaps here as well. Now I'll move onto the ILB's. I'm super excited about this group. We most likely have 3 worth starting jobs. Daryl Smith is a very good ILB. Mosely should be a great ILB in this league. And Arthur Brown looks ready to take a starting job as well. Those three should rotate in the 2 spots all season and do a good job. And like I commented in an article earlier, when we use a 4-3 look, we could use all 3 of them at the 3 LB spots. I'm also super excited about this group and can't wait to see it take the field.
I have a little bit more concern for the DB's than anywhere else, but I'm nonetheless excited. We now go into the season with 2 great CB's. It's nice to know that. But we have the slight concern of not having a clear cut #3 CB. I personally hope Chykie Brown can step in and be our #3 CB, but I'm not sure if that's going to happen. At S, I think Elam will be much better playing SS than FS. It should make him much better. While it doesn't sound like Terrence Brooks is going to take the starting job at FS, I'm not going to abandon the idea entirely. We've heard reports that Jeromy Miles and Darian Stewart have impressed. We can hope that those reports are true and that one of them will step in and do a good job for us.
Now here's my ending. It seems our D has a potential to be great. And we also have another thing to note. Our defense could be great for years to come. I mean, look at us in 5 years. While I'm not saying we will have all these guys in 5 years, I can say our defense would look something like this.
DL: Brandon Williams, Jernigan, Lewis-Moore, Tyson, Urban
LB: Mosely, Art Brown, Simon, Upshaw, McPhee
DB: Webb, Jimmy, Elam, Brooks
And of course that won't be it. You've noticed that the people I listed as an OLB (Simon, McPhee, and Upshaw) might not be our dream OLB scenario. But say I'm talking about our defense entering the 2019 season. We have the 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019 drafts to get us another OLB or two. And to shore up CB and whatever other position needs it.
All in all, I'm excited to watch our D this year. Are you?
