Wilbert Montgomery won't return in 2014 as Ravens running backs coach

Decided to pursue other opportunities, team says.

The Ravens won't return Wilbert Montgomery as their running backs coach in 2014.

Through a statement released by the organization, Ravens coach John Harbaugh announced that Montgomery has decided to part ways with the team that's employed him since 2008.

"Wilbert has decided to pursue other coaching and life opportunities," Harbaugh said in the statement. "I want to thank him for everything he did for our organization. Wilbert has been a tremendous coach for the Ravens, and he has played an integral role in the success we've experienced over the past several seasons.

"I have a great deal of respect for the person Wilbert is — not just as a coach, but also as an outstanding family man and someone who inspires everyone around him. In addition to his knowledge of the game and ability to connect with his players, Wilbert brought a passion to the Ravens that helped our team - and the individuals on it — reach tremendous heights."

Montgomery had some great years in Baltimore, helping to guide Ray Rice to three Pro Bowl appearances. But perhaps this season took a toll on him, as well as the rest of the coaching staff. The running game accounted for just 1,328 rushing yards, a season-worst in Ravens franchise history.

Fullback Vonta Leach took to twitter to express his gratitude for playing under Montgomery the past three seasons.
