Report: Lions likely to interview Jim Caldwell

Evan Habeeb-USA TODAY Sports

The Ravens offensive coordinator will is probably going to get a look at a head coaching job with Detroit.

This one comes at a bit of a surprise.

According to a report from the Baltimore Sun, the Detroit Lions will likely interview Ravens offensive coordinator Jim Caldwell for their open head coaching position.

The Lions fired former coach Jim Schwartz after the team failed to reach the playoffs.

Caldwell has previous NFL head coaching experience, as he led the Indianapolis Colts from 2009-2011. In 2009, Caldwell coached the Colts, with Peyton Manning at quarterback, to the Super Bowl, where they lost to the Saints. After a playoff appearance in 2010, the Colts went 2-14 in 2011, with Peyton Manning missing the season due to a neck injury.

The poor season led to Caldwell's dismissal, which ultimately landed him in Baltimore as the Ravens' quarterbacks coach. After Cam Cameron was fired following Week 14's loss to Washington in the 2012 regular season, Caldwell became the interim offensive coordinator, and was ultimately given the position full-time.

But the 2013 season saw the Ravens' offense struggle mightily. The rushing offense finished 30th (83.0 yards per game) and the passing offense was 18th (224.4) in the league. Caldwell's quarterback, Joe Flacco, threw a career-high 22 interceptions.

The offense only averaged 20 points per game and struggled in the red zone to convert opportunities into touchdowns.

It's certainly an interesting development to see Caldwell being considered for a head coaching opportunity. We'll just have to see how it plays out.
