In Justin Tucker, I see the makings of a great kicker. Some people take kickers for granted, but in my opinion, a really good or great kicker can make all the difference in the world, when it comes to a team's success. Matt Stover comes to mind of course. And speaking of Matt Stover, I saw him on one of the local shows, commenting on Tucker, and he really sees something in our young kicker, and that speaks volumes as far as I'm concerned.
There is something about our new kicker that tells me that he has "it", and I think I know why. He obviously has the range and the skill, but even more importantly, I think it's his attitude. He doesn't seem to be afraid of anything, and he seems like he'll try anything necessary to help the team. I loved that fake field goal in the Super Bowl, and in my opinion, it was a successful field position play, of which, I'd like to see more of those types of high risk, high reward plays from all phases of the team.. They say, "screw it, we're going for it." I know I say, he'll try anything, and I know that was the play that was called and he had no choice, but it was the way he approached it. Does that make sense?
But even more than that, he doesn't seem to get rattled easily, although like anybody, I'm sure there is a little disappointment when he misses one, but he seems to be the kind of player that moves on from that, and the next kick is a brand new kick. Plus, he has one heck of a sense of humor, and I think that is a strength. From what I've read, he is the clown of the locker room, and that type of personality, is usually pretty laid back, light hearted, and doesn't let too many things affect them.
By comparison, take Billy Cundiff. In truth, I think he possesses all of the necessary skills to be a fine kicker, but I think that he really held onto the negativity associated with you know what and you know when. He, like Tucker, had an opportunity to take a fresh approach the following season, but instead, got pissed off when Tucker was given a whole game. Tucker, on the other hand, just went out there and got the job done. He truly earned his spot with hard work, as "play like a Raven" demands.
I would like to hear some thoughts on our young kicker from some of the fine folks who stop by here...
