So, the Ravens traded Anquan Boldin to the 49ers for a 6th round pick. For most teams, this would be a shocking move that creates passionate outcry from the fans and talks of firing everyone from GM down to water boy. Luckily, the Ravens are not most teams. Every single year, we lose some of our favorite players through free agency or by cutting them outright. We cut Derrick Mason??!?!?? Ho-hum, replace him with Q and Torrey. We cut Todd Heap?!?!?!? Ho-hum, replace him with Pitta and Dickson. We lost Jarret Johnson?!?!?! Ho-hum, replace him with Upshaw.
As Mr. MaLoR likes to point out, we lose more free agents (and fan favorites) than any other team in the league. The reason for this is simple....we can afford it. It would be hard to find any team that does a better job of reloading the roster through the draft and crafty, underrated free agent moves than the Ravens. Guys who were unwanted by their former team come here and flourish. Jacoby Jones, Vonta Leach, Corey Graham, even Anquan Boldin were seen by their teams as expendable, and all have played huge roles here, and helped us win a Super Bowl. We lose so many fan favorites because we HAVE so many fan favorites. Our roster is always so stocked with talent that we can abide by that old Ozzie mantra of "Next Man Up". As our favorites go, new favorites replace them. 5 straight playoff appearances tells me that although it hurts losing Q, Reed, Kruger, or whoever else may go this offseason, we will replace them, and we will continue to be successful. We will have new fan favorites, and while we'll never forget the contributions those players made to this team, we will move on and be thankful that Ozzie and company will continue to bring in new guys to continue the great tradition of the Baltimore Ravens.
