At the Ravens press conference today, Dean Pees jumped at the chance to declare that he didn’t want to become a head coach. "I want to be a defensive coordinator." He’s had experience being a head coach at the college level and he did not enjoy all the duties that took him away from his players, who are the reason why he’s a coach in the first place.
"You become a head coach, you become everything but a coach," he said, adding that even in the NFL there are a lot of hats that a head coach has to wear. "I don’t want to wear those hats. I want to wear this one right out here on the practice field, call defenses and play ball and have fun with the players."
Personally, I think Pees has done and excellent job this year considering the circumstances, so I am really excited about this. We’ve had a lot of turnover at the defensive coordinator position over the past few years and assuming nothing changes his situation, maybe we can expect to have some stability moving forward, which I think it is going to be especially important without Ray Lewis--a constant for 17 years!
It would be nice if we could keep Caldwell for awhile too, but at least one side of the ball looks to remain steady.
