are doing their due diligence searching for a quality Guard to replace Ben Grubbs
, but do they already have a top option on the roster?
I've heard the possibility of converting Jah Reid
to Guard mentioned a couple of times, but the idea has never really gained any traction, and I think Reid is better suited for Tackle. However, in my mind Michael Oher
is best suited for Guard, Oher is not as long as the other Tackles on the roster, he struggles with quick edge rushers seeming to always jump a little early to avoid getting beat, he is a mauler, a strong run blocker, and would benefit in pass protection if he was inside and didn't have to worry about the edge. He would bring some moree mean streak and nastiness to the interior of the Ravens line, and prototypical size for the Guard position, I could see Oher as an All Pro Guard rather quickly. The Ravens would then lineup LT-McKinnie LG-Oher C-Birk RG-Yanda RT-?, obviously you do not want either of the Tackle positions to be a weakness, the Ravens have Reid and Harewood on the roster now, both have the size and length you look for at the position, and the Ravens seem to have some faith in Reid, Harewood is still a project, but could push Reid in an open competition for the position.
My final thought on Oher to Guard is that he has proven to be a team first guy, so I do not think the Ravens would have to worry about a negative attitude if they asked him to move. I think the Ravens have the personnel on the roster right now to form a better line than they had last season, side by side comparison:
2011 2012 Analysis
McKinney Mckinney LT - No change
Grubbs Oher LG - loved Grubbs, but Oher is a mauler and brings nastiness
Birk Birk C - No change
Yanda Yanda RG - No change
Oher Reid/Harewood RT - Reid and Harewood are more of the prototype RT
