What's Going On? (A New Weekly Series)
So I've been thinking recently and realized that our blog seems to be missing a little something. We lack a personal connection. Sure the sports conversation is always good, but I think we lack common knowledge of each other's welfare. So I'm introducing a weekly series (yes, weekly, my commitment to daily always wavers) called "What's Going On?"
What we'll do is simply just have conversation, talk about what's going on in our lives. Technically speaking, it's an open thread with the intention of finding out more about each other and what's happening in other people's lives. I think this would be a good way to get this site activity, and to get to know the people that we talk to on a daily basis. So I would like to know your guys' opinions on this idea, and if you would be willing to participate on it.

Absolutely
I did a Fan Post about this a while back, and it seemed like it eased the tension a bit and made it a little friendlier…but that quickly went away so doing it on a regular basis sounds good haha. Take away some of the anonymity of the internet and it makes it harder for people to be dicks.
As far as what's going on with me...
in the middle of buying a house, but the whole process is getting fucked up because someone ran a stop sign back in October and hit my brand new car while my wife was driving. What does that have to do with the house situation, you ask? Geico decided to wait from Oct 5 until the end of December to pay off the car, and the company I had gap insurance through (covering the difference in value of a new car and what it owed on a loan) STILL hasn’t paid off their end of it, and it has completely fucked my credit. I’ve been on the phone nearly every single day since the accident trying to get it settled, but it’s just one thing after another and I’m now stuck with 500+ dollars in late charges on the loan, plus marks on my credit (which was nearly perfect before this happened) slowing down the house buying process. FUCK GEICO!
Sorry dude, nasty stroke of luck. I was a loan officer for mortgages and stuff, and getting those lates on your credit can be killer. Little stuff like that can come back to haunt you if you ever want to refi, get a new car, new credit card. It makes it so much tougher to get loans and credit lines with the tiniest of blemishes. If you have a paper trail of everything that’s happened with precise dates and bank statements, you can probably get those lates taken off of your record….especially of it wasn’t your fault. Just have to have adequate proof.
Sorry, hope it works out and that your wife’s ok from the accident!

Yeah, we have documentation of everything and as soon as it’s settled, I’m going to dispute it and hopefully have it cleared up.
Sorry, hope it works out and that your wife’s ok from the accident!
She’s fine, no serious injuries, just soreness for a week or 2, but the car was totaled.
What type of car was it?

No, I think that's the Bolt
or something like that. The Cruze is like the new Cobalt, the standard Chevy model. They stopped making Cavaliers and started the Cobalt, then stopped those and started the Cruze.
Funny Story Actually
My drivers ed class had to drive around in the Cobalt, and we got onto the highway and broke down on a bridge, and had to walk all the way back to the school. Turns out it wasn’t as fuel efficient as we all thought haha

my wife and I are so different when it comes to the temperature in the car/house so I know how that goes. She loves the AC cranked and being cold, I like to be comfortable/warm.
I cannot sleep if I’m too warm. Like it’s weird my bedroom is always 10 degrees lower than everyone else in the house. I’m in the south, so being warm is overrated haah

I mean hell I’m right near Charlotte and Atlanta, so I heard of at least 10 shootings a day. It’s messed up, because things have gotten to the point where when people hear of someone getting shot and killed they don’t even give it a second thought. It just comes naturally to people to accept that.

I have no problem with the celebrity driven media, I know that’s what people are interested in. I just wish more was done to keep the innocent men, women, and children safe in their own neighborhoods when they are just trying to live their life. Too many criminals, including convicted murderers, get lenient sentences and are back on the street to do the same shit that got them locked up in the first place. The justice and rehabilitation systems are both severely messed up.

Very true, it'll never be completely eliminated
but an increased police presence and harsher penalties for violent crimes will certainly deter that behavior. Too often, people get a longer sentence for drugs than attempted murder/murder. It’s ridiculous. And don’t even get me started on convicted rapists/child molesters being let out within only a few years.
Police presence is statistically correlated with less crime, but prison sentences are not. Penalties dont serve as a deterrent for guys who dont think about consequences. Thats why theyre crooks and we’re not. Im sure theres a few people youve met who you wouldnt mind seeing bad things happen to, but we dont do that because its wrong and also because we know what we have to lose. Most criminals either dont have much to lose, dont care if they lose it, or theyre simply to narcissistic to think they could lose it.
A dude who committed 4 murders in 2011 doesnt give a damn about new sentencing requirements. Hes going to keep doing what he does until he cant.

I agree
but harsher consequences will deter some people, maybe not the complete psychopaths. Also, harsher consequences keep those people in jail longer, and therefore off the street and unable to commit more crimes.

Everything about the O's is just a joke at this point
I’ve hit rock bottom with them. Every year I talk myself into thinking this is the year they start to turn it around, every year I have faith in Daniel Cabrera/Adam Loewen/Brian Matusz and say we’re gonna hit .500 and get back into the playoffs the year after that…and every year I am massively disappointed. They have shitty MLB talent, shitty Minor League talent, they suck at drafting and developing, and the owner sucks and every GM he’s hired has failed. There is no light at the end of the tunnel, they’re gonna be bad at least another 5 years the way things are going. I just hope it somehow gets turned around after that.
I think if DD can successful implement an Oakland A’s like system we can turn things around.

I hope so
and I know he had absolutely nothing to work with, but some of his moves so far have been head scratchers. As long as we can improve player scouting/development and actually get something going in other countries (and not get banned from them), there’s no reason we can’t compete. We have enough money to be middle of the pack, so that’s no excuse, just bad decisions have doomed us.

My son is absolutely spoiled right now, by us and the rest of our family. Hopefully he doesn’t take the adjustment too hard.
My oldest daughter's 2010 Honda got totaled last year when someone cut her off at a traffic light.
We all changed insurance from Allstate to AAA in 2010 when I started comparing prices and coverage. Allstate was really screwing us on price with just barely minimum coverage. AAA paid my daughter off and with the gap she received more back than she paid in. I gave her one of our cars to drive till she gets around to getting a new one. I told her to wait until year end and maybe she will find a better deal. A friend just gave me his car, a 2007 Impala SS. It has 150,000 miles on it but it is in showroom condition with a brand new transmission. He bought a 2009 BMW SUV. It’s nice to have good friends that help each other all the time.
Thats one thing I miss
In the military, apart from close friends, you’re all from different parts and can’t trust one another. As for cars!? Ha! I’d be more comfortable taking the trip home and doing business in Baltimore.

Needless to say I won’t be around the Beatdown for a while, unless Bruce can pull some strings with the Salt Lake metro jail….

Just let it be a learning experience. Everybody makes mistakes at some point, but what I don’t understand is people who have double digit DUIs and still have a driver’s license. Government doesn’t care about safety, that driver being on the road puts money into the economy, and that’s all that matters to them. Glad you didn’t hurt yourself or someone else.
After going through the whole court process, I can tell you that I completely agree with you on that it just seems like the government is more concerned with funneling money in then actually keeping the streets safe. But all in all this has been a HUGE learning experience, it won’t happen again, and I’m going to be the guy that’s anal about my friends not following in my footsteps.

Mostly fiction
a lot of horror stuff, but anything good that people recommend. One of my favorite series ever is the Earth’s Children series by Jean Auel, it’s about a girl who lived back in the days when modern humans and Neanderthals were both around, and she loses her whole family/village in an earthquake and gets taken in by the Neanderthals. Eventually she sets off to find “her people”. Sounds kinda weird, I know, but it is an amazing series of books.

It’s obvious the amount of detail he puts into them.

I'll read anything by
Stephen King and recently have been hooked on Time Travel books, started by King’s recent amazing book, 11-22-63, his time travel story of trying to save JFK.

Wow, I’ll have to check it out. Fiction is definitely my favorite as well. I’m a bit of a nerd for the Song of Ice and Fire series (or Game of Thrones for the non reading enthusiasts).

A favorite of mine
Is the Eragon series. I am in love with Christopher Paolini’s way with words

My fiancé is begging me to read them. I’ve always just brushed them off, but if a fellow (male) Ravens fan likes them, its worth a shot.

Yeah it’s definitely worth the read. It’s one of those stories where after a while you just get lost in the words, and it feels like you are actually in the story.

The first book is called Clan of the Cave Bear
one of the best in the series. It’s a 6 book series, and they’re all pretty good. With most series, the author seems to have a hard time ending it (The Dark Tower series by Stephen King is one of my favorite series 1-4, then 5-7 aren’t that great, IMO), so the last book isn’t my favorite, but still good.
I’m not a big Stephen King fan actually.

Oh well then you should check out a book called Fearless by Max Lucado. It really helped me reconnect to God

Not a huge fan of Oprah but
Her recommendation of the 800 page book, The Story of Edgar Sawtelle will be one of the best books you ever read.

ten freaking days? Utah is ultra conservative huh? Or is that a second or third offense?
Can I get some hot sauce for my doughnut?
High BAC, and I elected 10 days jail over 240 hours of community service. And yes, Utah is pretty ultra conservative.

"And, don’t get me started on Joe Flacco," Simms continued. "Did the experts watch the game? Joe didn’t miss a throw, not one. I watched every play. Every time he had the opportunity, he hit the guy. And, he made some moves so he could complete other throws. Are these people watching? What was Joe supposed to do with Texans in his face? Throw it up and hope? Sometimes a sack is a good thing. The object is to win the game. You did."
