question for Ravens fans, regarding salary cap

I hear that you guys are in a good cap situation..Are you guys going to sign RR to a long term deal? If so, at what price? Flacco, he is still working on his rookie contract..I hear that Ravens owner, Mr. Bischotti is looking to sign Flacco long term...what numbers are we looking at? !0ml per year? What about Ben Grubbs? Will he be signed? JJ, is he an UFA? Once you pay RR and Flacco, how does it look to sign the other guys? The strength of this O-line is up the middle, Yanda, Grubbs and birk, who is retiring?

thanx

I hear that you guys are in a good cap situation..

$8.5 million under the cap at the moment. We get $1.5 million more with Ricky Williams retiring. If or when we cut Dominique Foxworth and Lee Evans, we will be just short of $19 million under the cap.

Are you guys going to sign RR to a long term deal? If so, at what price?

Yes. Price? Not too sure. The franchise tag just doesn’t make sense. I would expect around 5 years, $35-42 million.

Flacco, he is still working on his rookie contract..I hear that Ravens owner, Mr. Bischotti is looking to sign Flacco long term…what numbers are we looking at?

Bisciotti and Ozzie are going to get that deal down. I say around 7 years, $60-65 million.

What about Ben Grubbs? Will he be signed?

Probably not, but could be franchised.

JJ, is he an UFA?

Yes, still unsure of whether is stays here or not. Ravens fans certainly want him back though.

Once you pay RR and Flacco, how does it look to sign the other guys?

Probably not so good, we will most likely see a bunch of new faces in here next season. But we saw 20 new players on this roster this year, and had our best season yet. So not too worried if we have to get rid of some role players, we always reload. Our “Capologist” is also one of the best in the business, Pat Moriarty. So not worried about under spending or over spending. We will get what we can pay for.

The strength of this O-line is up the middle, Yanda, Grubbs and birk, who is retiring?

Birk is most likely gone. Yanda is around for a while. Grubbs….no one really knows. Most likely bringing Gurode back to play Center for a year or two.

but what are the chances Ray Lewis retires? If he does will that free up a lot of cap space?

Not as much as you might think

$4.95M in 2012. But he’s coming back so don’t get too excited.

Ed Reed is actually the bigger cap hit ($10M) in 2012. Expect him back for one more year too.

Flacco will get much more than $8-9M a year

More in the $12-14/year range. Rice could def be Franchised, while I doubt Ben would be or even signed. I could see JJ returning, but he’d have tovtake a home team discount, as I could easily see him in Indy with Pagano.

Flacco and Rice

Agree with Malor on Rice – somewhere in the 5 yr/$7-8M/year range.

I think he’s low on Flacco though. I’ll guess more like 6 yr/$68M range and definitely averages over $10M/yr.

We’ll sign Grubbs unless some other team throws crazy money at him. Which probably means he won’t be back.

I think JJ will be back. He wants to be a Raven, the Ravens want him, so they’ll find a way.

Birk should retire and Gurode will be given first shot ($3M/yr range) to come back. If he tests the market, I won’t be too surprised to see us bring in another vet on a one or two year deal. If we lose Grubbs, I could see making a run at Hardwick on a longer, more epensive deal since I think it will be easier to address OG in the draft than center.

I feel Rice will get $40 to $50M…he is a top performer on a team that desperately needs him to continue to perform

Flacco? He is going to get paid… And it may not be in Baltimore. $80M over 7

These are two of many young stars in Baltimore.

pitt continues to abuse the cal credit card with the restructurings…at some point they will pay for it. As it is, whines hard is gone…along with many others …just to get under the cap

Betting pool

I’ll get in the betting pool, but absolute $ are tough since the length is not known. I think we should go with average per year (including bonuses).

Put me down for $11.3/yr.

Read it again…then give it another try…

Malor, I love Flacco and i see him staying in Bmore and getting $80-$100M. He may not stay…depending on how this Caldwell hiring goes… and whether Cameron and Harbaugh remain as coaches. Next season will dictate

by Evan Skev on Feb 12, 2012 6:23 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I don’t think the number will be THAT high. I think $80 million will be the top offer, but expect him to get around $65 million.

He is definitely a franchise QB, but hasn’t won a SB yet. He isn’t going to get Peyton Manning, Brady, or Ben money simply because…….well he is not in their class yet.

The Ravens are not going to risk letting a young, successful QB with no personal issues (like many others) hit the open market. Just is not going to happen.

He is going to get a contract within the next few months. And $120 million? I hope the team is not that stupid. $60-75 is what he is going to get.

I think you are off by a mil for the average, as I think Flacco is going to command and get closer to $13M per year on average. So my summary would be 7 years at ~$90M -basically all the same numbers as yours, just add $1M to each.

Actually, Ben still has a lot of room to improve. In fact, if he can get out of his comfort zone and use more short routes/checkdowns instead of going for the deep ball every play then his stats should drastically improve. Just because he’s 30 doesn’t mean he can’t improve.

Every QB has the room to improve. If we got rid of Cam and stopped bombing the ball down the field on every other play, Flacco’s completion percentage would have been in the upper 60’s – low 70’s.

Your “ifs” are difficult because Ben hasn’t really done them so far in his career. The possibility is there for him to learn how to do it and actually change, but the likelihood is that nothing changes dramatically if at all positive.

Flacco is only entering his 5th year and has shown great improvement every year (even this year regardless of his stats) while Ben seems to be hurt more frequently and off target more frequently than in years past. Not saying Ben is done by any means, but I think its easy to see he is heading on the backside of his career overall.

Ben injuries are definitely a concern

He did show in at least one game last season that he can play the short game and very effectively. Three keys for Ben this year, imo:

1) get on the same page as Haley and work with him.

2) Stay healthy (this is as much up to the o-line as Ben but Ben is a contributing factor with his decision making).

3) Keep Wallace and get the TEs (Miller and Saunders) more involved as receivers (this is more to do with o-line development than Ben).

I think Ben can be a better QB. Hopefully we will find out in 2012.

Statistically I would say 2010 was his best, but this year I think Flacco has grown in the fact that he consistently played well against the top oppenents which has plagued him a bit in years past which I think is huge for his development. I expect Flacco to keep building on it and only getting better as our young offense grows.

that’s the exact reason that Rice doesn’t get paid like CJ. I remember hearing at the beginning of the season a lot of experts talking about how this will be the end of those massive long term contracts for RBs because of how CJ was performing. A lot of it will be incentive based (health, touches, etc) and front loaded just in case he hits that RB wall.

Scratching my head

According to this article, the Ravens have $6.18M of remaining 2011 cap space. That seems to defy everything we read heading into the season that we were just at the cap limit. But if that is true, then prospects are brighter for signingsome of our FA’s.

Great find!!!

I can rest easier now knowing that this can happen. After our cuts and all, we will be sitting at around $18 million or so. If we rolled over last years cap (which I see no reason not to since it isn’t THAT high of a number) we are approaching $25 million in cap room.

We current have $105,936,286 on the cap I believe (might have messed up the # crunching) If we add $6.18 mil from last year, we will be sitting at anywhere between $20-25 million it seems. That seems like a good amount to work with. We may even be able to bring in a big name FA if Grubbs ends up going elsewhere.

I agree, but since we already gave Yanda big $$$, just don’t see us giving Grubbs the same thing, possibly more. Would love to.

Anyway, who needs pass protection when you can just throw it to Boldin, Torrey, Jackson, Owens, Moss on every play?!?!?

Yeah, it sucks. Grubbs is most likely gone. He’s just gonna command too much money for the Ravens to justify keeping him. I see us drafting a C in the early rounds, playing him at G for a year, then letting him take over at C the next year.

Cap number is only part of the equation. Salaries rise & fall from year to year…depending on the player and the team’s payroll situation.

Further, no one knows this year’s cap yet

by Evan Skev on Feb 15, 2012 4:11 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I am a little confused by this. If this was so beneficial to each team, than why aren’t we seeing this talked about more and seeing teams jump on the chance to do this? A franchise like JAX has nearly $32 million extra cap space, so what would stop them from using it all this off season on top of what they already have and signing EVERY big time Free Agent out there?

I need to read into this a little more, the salary cap has always interested me.

"Picture Me Rollin"

by Mr MaLoR on Feb 12, 2012 7:14 PM EST up reply actions

'Tis true

I knew there were teams way under the cap this year – it was one of the reasons the Players Association negotiated the rule that by 2013 (?) teams have to spend at least 9x% (forget the exact figure) of the cap established for that year on player salary. It is specifically to prevent cheap teams like JAX from keeping the revenue. But they gave those teams a few years to catch up so they would not be forced to overpay for FA’s just to make the minimum. So yes – JAX can go sign a bunch of players.

Couple comments I found interesting from the 3 stories
Just wondering, if say the Jags or Seahawks carry over 20 million it would raise their cap to 144million. But wouldn’t playing one year at 20million above the Cap cause huge problems for the future?? I would see this being useful for teams to carry over 2 or 3 millions but going crazy over the cap seems like a bad idea.
When the 89-percent per-team spending minimum kicks in next year, the threshold will be based on the unadjusted cap number. And so no amount of carried-over cap space will increase the amount each team must spend on a rolling three-year average, as of 2013.
As I said on the other one, wouldn’t playing one year 20million over the cap cause cap problems the next year when you have to go back down to normal. That would seem like a pretty good reason not too carry the full amount over.

Not necessarily if you use it correctly. You could use that money for a bunch of 1 year deals, or if you really can keep rolling it over you could use it for a decent 4 year contract for someone. Look at it this way: You’ve got $20MM Left over, you give someone a 4 year contract that pays $5MM a year, you’re essentially getting that player without having to take any sort of cap hit. Another way you could take advantage of this is by frontloading contracts: Instead of giving someone a 4 year $14MM contract that pays out equally every year you can structure it so that it pays $10MM in year 1 and then $1MM in each remaining year. Thus for the last 3 years of the contract you’re getting a player for almost no cap hit.

There is no downside to this arrangement for teams that have a lot of cap space left over.
They may carry it this year, but in 2013 the minimum(floor) spending kicks in. If they carry over the excess cap $, doesn’t it force them to spend it instead of keeping it? If so, I doubt the small market teams would do it.
This will be the only year this is a big deal (because the floor cap rule doesn’t kick in for another year in 2013.) This year there is still a cap floor rule, but it’s that every team COMBINED, not individually, has to meet a certain cap floor. So teams can still individually be under the floor as long as the ones at it pick up most of the slack and it all combined comes out to the floor number.

And as one commenter pointed out…

All this is telling me… Mario Williams… Vincent Jackson… say hello to…. Jacksonville!?

Along with two first round draft picks. They are going to be the tough team to watch, getting better with a very solid young nucleus for years to come, while the Steelers are on the precipice of falling apart due to age, injury and cap issues.

Age? Yeah, their defense might be old and they might not be able to replace certain veterans (although I think the Steelers can), but their offense is young and only has room to grow. And we all know that the league is becoming more and more offense-oriented every year.

cap issues

This quote shows me that you have no idea what you are talking about. The Steelers were $25 million over the cap, and they have already cut $18 million in spending and they have only released two players, neither of which were starters.

Harrison, Woodley and Troy would be tri-DPOY’s just be virtue of the padding of their stats by going up against that line twice a season… In fact, if you want to talk ripple effect, even Keisel would have padded his stats so much by virtue of those two games that he would no longer be a Steeler as they would not have been able to afford to pay him, given his stats…

I have heard it argued that the Bengals owner will use this as the last year to print money before he is forced by the salary floor to spend more money. If he decides to commit to building a great football team rather than getting richer then the Bengals could be a force.

To Answer

The original question, Flacco gets a new long term deal and Rice is tagged (Rice will get a new deal next year). JJ is gone (most likely Indy as every DC to leave Baltimore takes at least one person of note with him) as is Grubbs (to KC maybe as someone else suggested?). I think Evans gets restructured and we go from there.

We do not tag Grubbs because it would be too much as tags for guards are the same as tags for LT’s.

Given what I have stated above, I believe we sign the rest of our UFA’s and RFA’s that we want to keep.

Assuming Grubbs leaves, the only FA’s I see the Ravens acquiring would be on the O-Line as any significant WR’s would be too expensive given our cap situation. Given the supply/demand issues with the 2012 NFL FA market, I think there will be value to be had in O-Linemen.

The only situation I’m worried about is we franchise Rice this year. Flacco doesn’t get a new deal this offseason. We enter next off season needing to sign Flacco, Rice, and Webb. I doubt our Front Office will let it get that far though.

JJ is gone (most likely Indy…)

Not sure why everyone thinks he’ll end up in Indy. Pagano would love to be able to change that 4-3 defense into a 3-4, but the personnel isn’t there to make that switch. Even if they were to switch to the 3-4, an OLB would be one of the last positions they would need with Freeney likely manning the OLB on one side and Mathis on the other. The likelihood of them going after JJ depends on what they do with resigning Mathis (whom has already been mentioned as being on near the top of Isray’s “resign” list).

Nah, the positive we have is that Flacco’s deal can be spread out over a long term deal. We have some guys retiring in the next few years that will free up a significant amount of cap space, so we can afford to sign guys now, but make sure they get paid in a year or 2. Chances are we will end up cutting a few guys that we all would rather keep just like we did last year, while securing our stars and picking up a few FAs that maybe are a little undervalued for a good steal.

I think we at least stay as good as we were this year in our talent pool and have another year to grow together as an offense and improve a bit…. all while still being under the cap.

Rice won’t get CJ money. At first it sucked seeing CJ and AP get those contracts, but look what happened to both. CJ had by far the worst year of his career and AP tore his ACL. Ozzie wouldn’t give up that type of money for an RB in the first place and now after their seasons he definitely won’t get that much. Probably 8 or 9 mill a year. We won’t be in cap hell though. We are already about 10 mill under I believe and if we cut Foxworth and Lee Evans that is about an additional 9 mill. We are fine we have one of the best in the business when it comes to the cap.
